RateBeer Brew Tour Guide's Comments
Not only does this University District brewery (located 1 block from the UW) rotate over 50 beers a year--it rotates about 50 superlative beers a year. A tremendous variety of beers and styles rotated every couple of weeks throughout the year. Of the four regular beers on tap, be sure to indulge in Bhagwan’s Best IPA and Coal Creek Porter--two of the best beers of their respective styles.
While Seattle, is a summer vacationer’s paradise--this brewery gives one reason to be happy they made the winter trek through dismal skies--offering such seasonal favorites as Frosty’s Spiced Winter Warmer. Because their beer distribution is confined almost exclusively to onsite, few serious beer lovers have had a chance to sample Big Time’s Brews. They allow you to make your own beer sampler--at their bargain price--make sure to order several!!
*If in the area and up for more sampling, you may also want to check out the RAM Bighorn Brewery in trendy University Village--just blocks east of the UW on 45th. The RAM brews a wonderful German Wheat as well as probably the best blueberry ale you may ever enjoy.

| BlackDonald (58), North Carolina | | August 3, 2008 This place is kind of a shit hole, but what do you expect from a place that gets crowded and trashed every night of the week. Fortunately their beer kicks ass, so it is worth putting up with the staff that looks like they wish they were somewhere else. I did appreciate the make your own sampler. So between the two of us we got to try pretty much everything on tap that day. | | ajm (67), California | | July 3, 2008 [ Updated August 14, 2008 ] A good, not great, place. Ambiance only falters from the glass front wall - don’t like it. Only their own beers, which is a hitch for me since I usually only like one, and here was no exception. But a great place to meet and hang out - they just happen to brew their own beer. | mnapier (7), Washington does not count | | March 11, 2008 Since 1988 offering, college students a place to shoot the shite, and have a good pint and sandwich to boot.
With exposed walls that display the wort and mash tun tanks, this place has a little of everything. If you want a brew, step on up to the bar, complete with a cask.
Want a sandwich, turn around and between the nachos, the sandwiches, or bake potatoes, its here. Be advised, they do take both credit and cash, but the two sections (beer / food) require separate transactions.
Good selection of dark and light ales, and the occasional seasonal. If you want to venture further back you can sit amongst the wooden booths. So swing by have a brew and a sandwich.
Cheer | | BrewDad (188), Olympia, Washington | | February 24, 2008 [ Updated September 11, 2008 ] In an old building with a great brick pub look inside. The old bar and the old beer collection and art on the wall were awesome. A wave of great music in the air. 11 taps of their own stuff and the beers where very good. They love there hops here. Good pub selection of food. The reggae music was fun to listen to. This is a university pub for sure. Parking is very hard to find so come looking to hoof to the place from a block or two away. | | Beershine (75), Miami Beach, Florida | | January 15, 2008 Great location in the university area of Seattle that has an endless supply of cheap restaurants and funky shops. In other words, it’s not in the middle of nowhere even though it’s far from downtown. Coming to this part of Seattle with non-beer geeks should be easy enough. Just let those idiots wander University Way while you sip up the many house brews at Big Time. All are well-made but some are much better than others. You can’t go wrong with the IPAs on tap. There will be at least 4 IPAs alone available including a single-hop. The atmosphere in Big Time is killer: it’s like a big old saloon with wide open spaces, a long old wooden bar, an old-school shuffleboard table, and plenty of brewerania. | | Feinschmecker (29), Seattle, Washington | | September 5, 2007 I believe the only have beer and no hard stuff. Their beer is really good. I really dig the oatmeal stout and Belgium beer. I thought the pizza, which people order often, is not so good, but it does not matter. For me, it is all about the barley juice! | uncahal (5), does not count | | July 16, 2007 Now THIS is a great place full of REAL people enjoying REAL beer.I never miss a chance while in Seattle to sip 5 or 6 lovely pints of various styles with the locals. It’s comfy/funky/deluxe.Not alot of money worshippers in here.Good folks.Good prices.Great brews. No problem. | Lexicon (4), Seattle, Washington does not count | | June 7, 2007 Home of the trombipulator and coal creek porter, this place knows how to brew. The food offerings include pizza, nachos, and sandwiches mostly. Not quite pub food, but satisfying and tastey, if a bit pricey. Has a shuffleboard table and TV in the back room; the main room is just your buddies and a view of the brewery. | | CapFlu (178), Victoria, British Columbia | | March 8, 2007 A great place to hang out, chat with friends or experience beer. The beers are generally very well produced and has a selection to match. I believe there were 12 beers on tap or which 2 were on tap, my favourites were the Dubliner Stout which carried an odd beef jerky aroma but the taste was beyond lovely, and the mainstay Scarlet Fire. Really odd to count six of the beers in the hoppy Pale Ale or IPA category. I shared a Quatro cheese and sun-dried tomato pizza with Sham – a tad pricey at ~$18, especially in the student quarters of town, but it was truly well done. Maybe second to American Flatbread’s pizza wizardry in Burlington, Vermont. I’ll definitely be back here again… | | mreeves (33), Sammamish, Washington | | January 11, 2007 Great University-area feel. Always lots of people in here, even at hours when there shouldn’t be, like 4 in the afternoon. Young, college crowd. All the beers are very good, nice rotating selection of special ones. I’ve never eaten here, but it looks like some good pub grub to be had. Service is almost quick and servers are very beer savvy. A great place to go. | View Page : 1 2 3 4
