| Nuffield (73), Roseville, Minnesota | | September 1, 2009 This is definitely worth a stop if you’re in Appleton. The building is somewhat cool--it isn’t done up particularly fancy and has tables and booths that make it a family restaurant of sorts with a somewhat dive bar feel. But it was fine for my family with small kids. Pizza was very good, definitely worth it. 10 beer sampler for $10 is great; a lot of mediocre beers but some very good ones including a special or two. Again, worth stopping. | | opkutech (13), Wisconsin | | July 30, 2009 Although the food is a bit pricy, I have never had a bad meal here. The beer seems to be very original which is one of their strong points (I had never heard of a Smoked Porter before). After reading the comments prior to mine, I can only say, your trip to a brew pub is exactally what you make of it, and I love stopping here on occation to see whats new on the list. | | gws57 (86), Saint Charles, Illinois | | March 3, 2009 Visited for lunch on a Saturday in February as part of WinTour 3. Service was a bit slow at first but friendly and attentive, if not extremely helpful, by the end. Seated at the interesting bar. Plenty of choices of good beers to choose from. My reuben sandwich was very greasy but wasn’t terrible. All in all, I would definitely like to come back and try this place again. Bonus: as we were leaving, told us where to get their "competetor’s" beers... I love small town brewpub culture!! | | satan165 (60), River Grove, Illinois | | February 6, 2009 spotty inconsistent service. my waiter was atrocious and got a $2 tip, the first time i dared to be so cheap in years (and this meal was expensed on business -- i didnt even pay!). total unacquainted with the brews at all. i sampled two, neither was very good and one was horrid. i was excited to see a place this small tap a firkin but the results were disastrious. i had the perch dinner (5-6 pieces of perch, fries and coleslaw) which was an astounding $15.99. it was edible however the fries (while still good) were certainly of the frozen variety. ambaince was nice and kept things lively. place was packed on a friday night, certainly wasnt for the beer or the value. they did have one guest tap (goose island mild winter). parking is really bad, there is a big lot in back but you cant park there (its for the adjacent comedy club) leaving you the small lot in front (which was was completely boxed into with my work van and almost was trapped). overall | | phishpond417 (51), Madison, Wisconsin | | October 18, 2008 As described, this brewpub is located in a building among other businesses along the locks and is a great location for a brewery. The brewpub itself is located in the basement and the ambiance is like walking down into an old brewery somewhere in Germany. Dimly lit, very old world style architecture and interior. The beer was great, no complaints here. Very nice place. | | esjaygee (103), Oak Creek, Wisconsin | | July 7, 2008 I liked this place as soon as I walked into the cellar. The lights were dimmed down low, the chalk board was full of new beers for me to try, the bartender was friendly and those at the bar were discussing brew pubs of Wisconsin. After ordering a sampler, which contained 11 glasses of beer for $9. So I decide to start with that light beer on the end… which just happens to be a root beer, a la the birch beer variety. The beer itself was pretty good. I didn’t have the food here since I ate at Fratellos in Oshkosh, but I’ll have something next time I stop in. They had a handful of their beers available for sale in a cooler. | | notalush (159), Denver, Colorado | | June 23, 2008 Well, this place is aptly named - it really is a stone cellar in an old building - really cool feel to the place - we went on a Sunday afternoon, so it was pretty quiet, but I’m sure this place is jumping most of the time - they have a nice deck outside for those that like to be in the sun while they drink, as opposed to the dark cellar atmosphere - we didn’t try the food, but the beer was decent, and there was a solid line up (about 7 standards and two special/seasonal beers) - the fact that they hand-bottle 12 ouncers and sell them in six packs is pretty cool (I grabbed one to take home) - like most brewpubs, it isn’t worth going out of your way for, but this is a must stop if you’re in or near Appleton. | | heemer77 (171), Savannah, Missouri | | May 5, 2008 I loved walking into the buliding, hard to describe, but it’s like stepping into 1980. Just something about the styling of the entire place. Visited here on a weeknight. I enjoyed the company of some locals as I plowed through the sampler tray. I had tried a few of their things in bottles before, so I knew it would be decent. I was not dissapointed. Most of the beers were above average and they do a variety of styles. I purchased a few bottles to take home. I had some stew while here, but was not impressed. | | surlysober (24), Milwaukee, Wisconsin | | February 10, 2008 The Stone Cellar would be a good brewpub no matter where you put it, but being located in the Fox River Valley makes it a great brewpub. Nothing against the Fox River Valley, but there’s just not that much around there that’s very beery. My folks live in Neenah, and this has become my new favorite place to hit up when I visit. There’s a good variety of beers (~9 regulars + 3 rotating), plus their own specialty sodas. I had a coffee porter followed by their grand cru. Both, although somewhat approachable, were good. The vanilla porter (which I had on another occasion) was also good. To eat, I had a Kobe burger which was great. In addition, on the menu I noticed they have a monthly Beer School, with February 19th being single-hop beer day... Wish I could be there for that one. | IlanMan (7), Appleton, Wisconsin does not count - explanation | | January 27, 2008 Good food. Great beers. Awesome service. Steve, the main brewer, is a very nice guy that also happens to brew some real tasty beers. Well worth the trip to stop in. |
