76 /100 Bier Lokaal (Beer Store) BOSCHSTRAAT 150 Shelves on the wall, setup in the middle and fridges, the setup is familiar, modern craft beer shop. Friendly service, standard prices, modern craft and classics. Going from tripels to pasty stouts. Good stuff and not too much competition in town I assume, in general nothing that really stood out but hard to gage as a visitor how it compares to elsewhere locally. |
88 /100 BOSCHSTRAAT 26 Wow this place was a cool surprise, interior recalls perfectly Belgian bars of decades old / yore with lots of small, wonderful details, a real love affair. Full place upon visit with older clientele fittingly for the place. Quick service, tried two of their own beers which features quite a few German styles, solid Schwarzbier, okay pilsner. Some new school Dutch beers on the menu, solid list of classics and an impressive lambiek list. Wonderful place, almost a love letter to times gone by. |
86 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT A bar that I have heard about a lot over the years but never managed to visit until now. Modern bright slick, low restaurant look (which it in part is also), good number of seats on the terrace. Located centrally, service is really good. 30 beers on tap, lots of old school hype breweries including the likes of Trillium, Bruery and Oscar Blues, BE classics. Slightly nostalgic and awesome tap list, comfortable atmosphere, lots of good stuff. Two small notes, tap list is on Untappd which is logical given the rotating nature but there are no prices, there is a board inside but prices on Untappd would have been better with taps varying in price wildly from 4.5 € - 12.5 €. Lots of allergen information on the menu but still no vegan option or something with no listed combo of allergen which makes it more complicated. Still awesome service, chill and cool tap list for sure. |
92 /100 VEILINGKADE 9A 2020 so before the recent expansion. Visited during Heet Zuur Hop Festival during which their taproom operated as normal. Sadly the beer store selection was closed. Low industrial vibe or rather usual brewery in more industrial area but of course cooler than usual because of the chilli fair going on during my visit. 30 taps about half of them Frontaal beers, prices in line with Netherland not cheap but doable. Frontaal is excellent one of the best breweries in the country and those beers were just awesome, the guest taps were equally impressive. I mean 2 Jester Kings on tap but also stuff like Bakunin, Cantillon, awesome draft selection really. Really stellar. You can pay by card or cash. |
78 /100 BOSCHSTRAAT 26 Cute little place with nice outside patio. Several house beers on tap, but impressive bottle/can list especially with big Dutch barley wines and stouts. |
70 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT Nice location with outside seating. Bottle and tap list has a good selection of good international beers but not really super special. Flights available but could not find five beers I had not previously tried worthy of sampling. So just stuck with a Westbrook, which for me defeats the purpose of being in the Netherlands. |
76 /100 BOSCHSTRAAT 26 Mooie bruine kroeg, leuk terras. |
66 /100 Cafe SAMSAM (Bar) GROTE MARKT 2 Beer choice not so interesting. Opposite Zeezicht( with very interesting beers on tap). Same owner as Zeezicht.
|
92 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT 30 taps. Generous beerflights (5 * 15cl). About 20 rotating taps, always some US & CA beers, besides other countries. There seems to be most of the time an Evil Twin beer on tap. Almost all the time 10 of the tapbeers are high quality. |
96 /100 VEILINGKADE 9A Good site with a good beer. |
70 /100 VEILINGKADE 9A Industrial place. 31 taps. There's a bottle shop. Free WiFi. |
78 /100 Aogse Markt (Bar) HAAGSE MARKT 5 Enthouseastic team with all kind of funny events. Good food and a large selection of beers though the selection might be more exciting. Fabulous terrace. |
86 /100 Het Bierhuis (Beer Store) VAN GOORSTRAAT 5 I was really sirprised by this small shop. Well, small, it appeared small. Inside the place was packed with beers, interesting line of cans but also some small local breweries. Very friendly owner / staff. I definitely need to go back to check it out in more detail. Worth the 15-20 minute walk from the train station I'd say. |
94 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT Perfect place to drink and taste some US craft beers from draft. The bottle list is rather boring, with mostly Belgian beers, and the usuals. The taps (30 in total) have 20 rotating ones and all of them are from US or Canada with a few from Pohjala and To Ol. As stated the prices are quite high (which is to be expected from these imports) but the beer flight helps to get 5 beers for 17,50 in tasting glasses which were indeed (also stated before) quite big for tasting glasses.
Service was fine, if a bit chaotic (but terrace was filled to the max). And the food was actually quite good.
When I was there they had beers from Hoppin' Frog, To Ol, Pohjala, Perennial, Founders, White Hag, Prairie, Evil Twin, Bilboquet, Mike Hess, Aslin, Kent Falls, Collective Arts and Hi-Wire (among others). |
88 /100 BOSCHSTRAAT 26 From the looks and feel, I was a little afraid I would wind up in a bar offering nothing but the Belgian macro and family breweries and some boring mediocre Dutch impressions of the above. While part of that was definitely true, and most of the offerings on the menu are very common Belgian beers, they offered quite some new Dutch craft breweries as well. The house beers weren't half as bad as I had feared, much more bitter and hoppier than the Belgian offerings. As I had already sampled the 4 house beers in a sample flight, drinking full glasses of the other draft beers would have been unwise, so I politely asked if I could get a sampling tray with the 3 other beers on draft I hadn't had before, which was no problem. Very kind staff, the food looked decent though we only had a plate of mixed hot and cold snacks, which was also good. Having had a huge breakfast at the hotel late in the morning, and a lot of beers the day before, this was all my stomach could handle. ;-) Definitely worth the visit, decent prices, and they are, maybe a bit late compared to some other, catching up with the Dutch craft beer scene as well. Maybe even more so than the other bars who would more focus on international craft than the Dutch scene. |
90 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT Visited for lunch on a Saturday, best to make reservations here, as it can get very busy. Both downstairs and upstairs were completely full. With only two waiters serving the top floor, it took a while between getting handed the menu and ordering, but this was perfectly fine, cause it took me a while looking up all the beers I didn't know by heart. Half of the menu was rather boring Belgian stuff, like Leffe, Jupiler, etc... But oh boy, the other half! Man, so many good beers! Lots of US and some EU import, good ipas, stouts, etc... Man, what a tick fest! They offer sample flights, though the samples are pretty big (I'm guessing 15cl), so the price is accordingly (€17.5 for 5 sample glasses). But if you choose wisely, it's definitely worth the cost. Really good quality beers! |
68 /100 VEILINGKADE 9A It's a bit of a walk outside the city centre, and not the nicest walk if I might add. But, the bar is cosy enough and I bet in summer time it's a pretty crowded location with all the hipster-businesses (like a writing workshop place, an organic bakery, etc...) in sea containers on the site. Alas only 4 taps available, with just two of their own beers and two guest beers. Service was rather poor. A friendly chap, and even him only speaking English, I don't mind. But he was terribly slow. I ordered a glass of each of the draft beers, "yes, all at once, then the stout can warm up a bit by the time I've drunk the other beers", and by the time I had looked at all the bottles on the shelves and in the fridge, he still had only poured one beer, but two glasses of it, as I was there with my wife and he wrongly assumed we both wanted all the beers instead of sharing them. Oh well. Bottles were priced ok if you wanted to drink them there, but there was no take away discount, so for a shop, the prices were really high. (starting at 4.5 per bottle and quickly upwards). So I ended up buying only one bottle to take home. There is supposed to be a brewery nearby, but all we could see was the container-tasting room. I guess it's worth the visit if you're staying a couple days, with all the bottles in the fridge. But if you're just for a day in Breda, I think there's enough to do in the city centre, beer wise. |
54 /100 Beers & Barrels Breda (Bar) CERESSTRAAT 15 Modern spacious, open and at the same time busy / full interior. Large square bar in the middle of the bar. Too big maybe. Not too crowded when I visited but still a bit slow service. IPA from tap wasn't very fresh. Beerlist is ok, a decent variety in styles although I miss DIPA's and stouts. Maybe not for their usual crowd? Wasn't very impressed with this place tbh. |
68 /100 Catch 22 (Bar) VISMARKTSTRAAT 14 Local bar / sports bar but with a decent selection. Even the odd new rate and some nice IPA's and RIS on bottle. Worth quickly checking out when around. |
78 /100 Het Bierhuis (Beer Store) VAN GOORSTRAAT 5 This shop is located on the southern edge of the centre of town, so if you viewed Breda as a clock face it sits between 5 and 6. It's on a street called Van Goorstraat and is quite easy to find, I reckon just 7-8 mins walk maybe less from the Grote Markt should get you there. We visited on Tuesday 26th September 2017. Inside its shall we say rather busy, the majority of the shop is given over to beer but there is some wines and spirits to your right as you go in. The beers are set out by country with Belgium taking much of one of the far walls and the Netherlands one of the others, central islands of beers are hampered a little by many boxes of beers/stock scattered here and there on the floor. The prices were very good and the selection was great, particularly the Dutch beers and nice to see a great focus on local breweries. I tried to strike up conversation with the owner but found him to be pretty unwilling to engage. My one way discussion querying whether a beer I'd picked (it was whisky cask aged) was Islay or not was almost completely one way. However boxes not put away and a grumpy owner aside the shop was very good. |
80 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT We visited Zeezicht Tuesday 26th September 2017. It is fairly easy to find as it is located at the far end of the market square, it is quite close to Café de Kleine Wereld which is at the other end of the market square. We sat outside soaking up a little autumnal warmth on one of the tables immediately outside the café, Interestingly there are lots more tables in the square itself which belong to this place. Inside its smaller than expected, one large square room, you enter from the corner and the bar is straight ahead. On the far wall is a list of the beers on tap, inside here there were a number of tables and chairs but as indicated it was nice outside so most folk were taking advantage of the good weather. The beer choice was excellent and rather impressively the cards attached to the food menu which listed the beers on individual cards was bang up to date. I had a Hoppin' Frog Re-Pete 2 Loz had a Brewski Mango DIPA both were lovely. We also had lunch here and the food was very good. For me this was only really let down a little by the ambience and lack of character. The staff were friendly, service swift it was just a touch clinical and lacked the touches that make Café Beyard so great, however for great beer and a great location it ticks the boxes. |
90 /100 BOSCHSTRAAT 26 *Live rating, Just arrived in Breda walked from the central station through the park onto JF Kennedy Straat and first left the bar is ahead on the right. As for the Café itself, there is a covered area outside, inside it has a very comfortable homely feel about it, nice touches such as little rugs on some of the small tables, soft glow lighting from grape like bunches of globe lights. A row of pastel fabric covered simple stools up to the vertical slatted wooden bar which incidentally takes up most of the right hand side invites you to sit here, however we chose one of the rug tables. Simple red tiled flooring, a beer list off to the LH side on the wall. Enamel signs, some neon beer brewery advertising signs above the bar, completed the look. The service was top notch the joint owner spent a lot of time chatting with us explaining about this place, he was a lovely man. We arrived quite early so it was quiet. Beer choice was excellent we had their own beers, both of which were very good. If I had a bar that I wanted to be my local in Breda then this would definitely be it, it is a superb place. |
32 /100 GROTE MARKT 19 Visited with Caesar and completely agree with his review. Nice looking interior, looks like an old tavern indeed. Their own beers: bad, really bad. Unfortunate to say but they were so bad they should be ashamed to have this on tap and they should be even more ashamed of their prices for this crap! Avoid unless desperate for the ticks. |
34 /100 Belgian Beercafé Bruxelles (Restaurant) HAVERMARKT 7 Not sure why this is a restaurant as it’s clearly more a pub / bar. Usual suspects on tap and bottle, nothing special. Avoid. |
54 /100 Heeren van Breda (Bar) GROTE MARKT 31 Decent bar but not worth visiting for the experienced beer drinker. Nothing special. |
64 /100 Beers & Barrels Breda (Bar) CERESSTRAAT 15 Located in the old brewhouse of Drie Hoefijzers, now AB InBev, which it lies directly next to. A bit boring surrounding with a couple of ugly modern domestic blocks. Inside is absolutely stunning though, as they used the old brewhouse to build the bar in and through. Absolutely wonderful. For beers, its the same old Bier & co list you can see jn lots of places, which is not bad, but usually only gets you 1 or 2 ticks at best. Also, it hardly rotates, at least in Utrecht. Prices are high as well. But everybody should at least go check out the wonderful industrial interior and have the Drie Hoefijzers Klassiek on the side. |
30 /100 GROTE MARKT 19 Beautiful interior of a medieval tavern. But thats about the only thing that is good Im afraid. Their own beers are basicly horrible, buttery and vegetables. Served in dirty glassware. Also, way way way overpriced. Almost 5 euros for an own brew is simply a crime. Avoid. |
80 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT Nice cosy place at the end of the not so cosy Grote Markt. Sat in one of the couches overlooking the main square. Almost 30 taps of which about 10 are the obligatory ABI beers, but the other 20 are a beatiful collection of pretty rare stouts and IPAs for Dutch standards. Bottled list is almost absent, which is a shame for such a decent tap selection. Service was good, but could be more knowledgeable I guess. Must visit. |
64 /100 GROTE MARKT 19 Big bar, beatiful decoration, old style with a modern twist. with some of their own beers brewed at place, in "St. Joris Brouwerij", located in the basement (at least they said so). Centrally located, big terrace, seems that is more focused in eating, and beer is just there because people need to drink something. Weak house beers, at least what we tried, with some other usual suspects on tap, mainstream ones if i remind well. |
48 /100 Cafe SAMSAM (Bar) GROTE MARKT 2 Visited a while ago but apparently forgot to add my place rating. I can understand why as I wasn’t very satisfied with my visit. The beerlist was disappointing, mostly the usual Belgian suspects and a couple of Dutch brews that I had already rated. Staff isn’t very knowledgeable to say the least. Becasue it’s so easy to find in Breda’s pub area you can easily pay a short visit, but I wouldn’t recommend it. |
90 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT May 18th 2017. Surprising tap list with a couple of thick US imperial stouts on and some very solid IPA’s. Easy to find close to central station, close to other pubs as well. Nice long bar, places to sit indoors and out. Hmm I cam see myself visiting this place moe often. Although it would depend in how fast their beers rotate. -- Visited again on June 30th 2017. Taps have indeed rotated (makes sense after 6 weeks but still) and there were new awesome US beer from tap I have not seen anywhere else. I will definitely visit more often! Up from 80 to 90. |
88 /100 VEILINGKADE 9A Located in a kind of hipster small business commune area, it’s a cozy wooden bar by the brewery in shipping containers with seating inside and out. Six taps with their own beers and guests, as well as a really fun and varied selection of bottles and cans from around the world. A really great addition to the Breda beer scene, love it! |
80 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT Centrally located place at the end of a big long square of popular places, the opposite end to Kleine Wereld. Average size with seating outside around the bar and a terrace on the square. Modern/bruin mix inside with the minimalist but plentiful taps standing out when you walk in. The beer selection is as great when we visited, a bunch of quality American beers including gems like Westbrook 6th Anniversary and other interesting stuff. Prices were very fair too, with the expecting of the Hoppin Frog BA Doris which for some reason was double the price. Generally very reasonable for what’s on offer. There’s some bottles too but they’re boring. Just to keep the less adventurous sorts happy. Service was friendly and helpful enough and the food was decent. Certainly a top spot in the city. |
58 /100 Cafe SAMSAM (Bar) GROTE MARKT 2 They have an interesting beer menu, with about 20 beers from Breda (Drie Hoefijzers, Frontaal, Bliksem, Ramses) and a varied selection from (small) Dutch breweries; (almost) no foreign stuff though. The place itself is just average: good ambiance, but can become busy, beer knowledge of the staff is a bit lacking, the food was a bit salty and the fries old. Wouldn’t mind visiting again, but not my first pick. |
78 /100 BOSCHSTRAAT 26 I was lucky to turn up and find out a beer festival was in full swing. Many local brewers including themselves, many styles and strengths. A nice bar with lots of locals which was good to see. |
92 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT 30 taps with 22 of them rotating with beers from all over the world. Good service and great food as well. |
78 /100 BOSCHSTRAAT 26 Nice place in Breda. Interesting beer list with the own beers. Prices are ok. Friendly service. |
84 /100 Zeezicht (Bar) RIDDERSTRAAT 1 - GROTE MARKT Nice pub in centrum Breda. Lots of interesting craft beers from tap. Prices are rather high but very well chosen selection. Must visit when in Breda. |
