“Ruten Fjellstue (Ruten Mountain Lodge)is located about 860 meters above sea level. (According to the brewer, Arthur) The name, "Ruten" is from a nearby mountain, 1517 m.a.s.l. We stayed in a nice lodge only a few steps from the reception/bar. Lovely, rustic place and a breathtaking view to the mountains. The reception serves as a bar, if no one is present, just ring the bell on the desk. I never waited more than a minute or two, before Arthur showed up. He had five beers on kegs in the cellar and Arthur’s Sevjeøl 2014 (8,5 %) in a 75 cl bottle. The latter is a unique beer! No water is used to brew this beer, only local birch sap. Herbs: Yarrow and Meadowsweet. Earlier guests refer to a selection of about 60 bottles. Nowadays they hardly have any bottles, accept some of their own beers. That’s ok for me. I drove 690 km mainly to try beers from Espedalen Fjellbryggeri. Great service and nice beers! It was a long drive, but I will return. (Visited August 11th 2015)“

“OMG! What a lovely place! And such a nice and interested brewer! You must! try his Sevje ale. And be sure to get the story about it! 8 different of his own on my visit. Really decent when you realise where this is and the size of the brewery. Lovely standard! Highly recommendable!“

“A place you probably won’t see unless you decide you want to go there. And if you go there, it’s probably for outdoor activities, but I can understand it if you do like we did and take the detour just to sample the beers. Unfortunately we were there outside the season so we didn’t get to have the food, but the beers were solid, and the brewer showed us the brewery and talked us through the beers. I’ll certainly go back some day. I hope. And then I’ll drink more of them than just a small glass of each.“

“A small mountain inn with both rooms in the main building and smaller cabins around it. It’s fairly high up (930 m above sea level) in a remote valley three hours by car from Oslo. The area is perfect for mountain hiking and skiing, starting on the doorstep. It’s a really pleasant place with real soul and a long history. The restaurant serves excellent three-course dinners every day at 1900, with a very good selection of Norwegian craft beer (and quite a few imports), plus high-quality session beers from the hotel brewery. Service is outstanding. Have spent two weekends here, and been very happy both times.“

“Perfect place 3 hours from Oslo. Better selection of beers than most places in Norway. Good food and excellent service.“

“Fantstic setting among forest and mountains. Various tupes of lodging, from the more basic to higher standadr rooms. Good, home cooked food. Three home brewed beers when we visited, but also a splendid range of bottled beers. If you want a weekd away from Oslo, this is a great place to go. And the brewer, who is also the owner of the hotel, is happy to talk about beer and brewing.“

“Ruten Fjellstue is located in Espedalen, a small, sparsely habitated area up by the mountains. The view is gorgeous, with rolling hills and mountaintops off into the distant horizon. The restaurant is a bit dully decorated, but the lounge is proper norwegian winter lodge style, all wooden ceilings and walls, carved trolls, stuffed wild animals from the local fauna, and deep leather sofas perfect for sipping on good beers. The room we rented was the same style, but less decorated. Definitely cozy. The best thing about this place is that it has got it’s own brewery, Espedalen Fjellbryggeri. They had 3 beers on tap when we were there, all quality brews, along with around 60 bottles. Most of the Nøgne Ø beers, some hard to get Ægir, Haandbryggeriet, along with micros from around the world. Service was great, and the brewer was more than willing to talk about their beer, the brewing process, and showed us his brewery before we shared some brews. Definitely a nice place to spend a weekend or more. Tons of possible hikes and ski trips just around the corner, and a nice meal and a good beer in front of the fireplace when you get back.“
