74 /100 Estaminet de la Longue Croix (Restaurant) 3466 RUE DE STAPLE UPDATE: This estaminet was hit by a Romanian truck recently and so is closed and expected to reopen late 2017. Visited here with the in-laws who are regulars here. It’s a typical French Flanders country estaminet run by a husband & wife team in a traditional-looking building. Lots of antiques, posters, photos and regional curiosities line the walls and ceiling along with hop vines. Upon entering we’re given a warm welcome and handshake by the owner and shown to our table. A genuinely friendly guy who took at least five minutes of his time talking with us and catching up. Beer wise, expect a mix of Belgian classics and regional offerings. There’s about 25 bottles and 3 draft. I started with a local pils then got a Rince Cochon, which I surprisingly had never tried. Food is typical Flanders cuisine.. I had a beef carbonade made with Chimay Blue, others had a fantastic foot-long local sausage, as well as other regional dishes. For desert I got Speculoos mousse with cassonade sugar, which paired well with Chimay Rouge. A good stop-off if you’re in the area, but bear in mind it gets packed on a Fri/Sat night. |
