“So sad this place is closed. https://www.hammerheartbrewing.com/copy-of-beer-archive Dragged the family there during a late August trip in 2016, and loved the personality, and the massive smokiness. Was a 'Norwegian' feel to a small taproom with wood & meat smoke oozing from the pores. Brews were interesting (to me, if not to the young crowd) and well made, if consistently containing a smoke presence. Will miss it on this trip to the Cities, and forever on.“

“Nice place located a little bit north of the downtown metro area. Definitely has the Viking hall theme with lots of wood and Nordic symbols in the interior. It is a little bit smaller with 6 or 7 barrel table, a long bench, and about a half dozen seats at the bar. There is also a small area out front. There must be some new staff because the person working the bar was very friendly and helpful. Oh, and they have good beer. Definitely worth a visit.“

“Big thanks to jackl for driving me all the way out here. I freaking loved this place. Don’t come here if you don’t like smoked beers. Even if a beer isn’t directly smoked it has a smoky quality. That being said, the beers are well made and meaty. With the heavy metal blasting and these beers you really feel like a Viking. Small wooden tasting room and the spruce tree just outside adds to the vibe. Bartender was a little passive, but generally OK. Overall a really tiny world class stop.

My score of 86 is too low as almost a year later I fondly remember this place and I keep telling other people about it.“

“I’d been meaning to get to Hammerheart for some time, but it’s location outside of the far northeast corner of the Twins Cities metro is not overly convenient, nor is the fact that they don’t open until 2pm every day except Sunday (noon). Essentially this means I’m only getting here going to or coming back from Duluth, and since those are usually weekend visits, until this past weekend it hasn’t worked out. And even this past Friday when I was able to make it, I had squeeze in a half hour on the way up to Duluth. Glad I did! Although I can’t say as I was overly impressed with the service, the space is really unique, and they have nailed their Nordic theme in the decor of their tap room. Rustic wood interior with antlers and barrels for tables. Nice outdoor patio space. The beer list is extensive, interesting and the most unique in the Twin Cities. The gal that was helping us was not overly friendly and lacking in humor, and the mini growlers she filled for us leaked. Outside of that, it was an outstanding experience.“

“It was fascinating to see a bunch of bottles from Haand brewery here, where the brewer did an apprenticeship. The place is sort of a generic industrial building, but with lots of Norweigian decorations, from the Rune covered tasting trays to antlers to Viking swords. 12 beers on offer, available in flights of four or as full pours. Quiet on a Thursday night. Beers all have smoked malt, so lots of commonalities. Solid place.“

“A fun, cozy spot that channels the ambiance of a doom metal hunting lodge. The metal accents (some runes carved into the wall, the odd hanging sword etc.) were subtle enough that the young families and normcore clientele that were here didn’t seem out of place. The standard of beer was pretty high. Almost all of the 12ish taps featured beers made with smoked malt. This might give some people pause, but HammerHeart know what they’re doing. Their Dunkel was a particular standout in a lineup that featured no duds. Prices were perhaps a bit higher than other tap rooms in the area, but not offensively so. Beer in the Twin Cities is pretty damn cheap, so in my opinion these guys still offer good value. Overall, this place is doing all the right things.“

“I really like this place, the Nordic Viking theme is really cool. Their beers are hit or miss for me but its nice to have lots of options from them, sorry not everything is good barrel aged and/or smoked. I need to make it there more its a fun place.“

“One of the best breweries in the metro area also offers one of the most comfortable, hospitable taprooms. Dark beers and barrel-aged strong beers are dialed in to a very high level of quality. Hammerheart has its shit together for sure and deserves more attention.“

“A really cool Viking hall vibe to the tap room. Also had someone playing bagpipes for a portion of our visit which was cool. Staff was very friendly and excited to discuss their beers which was nice. 12 beers on tap during my visit and samplers were available which is always nice. No food but they try to have food trucks on the weekend. Can bring in food as well. Prices were nice. Combine all that with good beer and you have a heck of a taproom.“

“Great taproom. Staff are friendly and will talk all night about their beers, their history, or whatever you’d like. Typically 8-10 beers on tap, changing frequently. It’s a point of pride for them how many unique beers (30+) they have brewed in their first 12 months. Taproom/brewery has a Nordic hall ambiance. A short bar area, a few barrels with chairs, and a longer communal wood table. No food nearby, but they’ve had food trucks pretty consistently on Friday/Saturday evenings, at least for the dinner hours. A family of four with two elementary-aged kids stopped by with some fast food and had dinner at the table... so bring whatever you’d like. I’ve been there twice now, and neither time did I experience the loud music reported by others, so maybe they’ve toned it down a bit.“

“Great little spot, amazing it has taken me so long to get here...thanks to Levi for finally dragging my sorry ass out of lab for a pint or three! Small-ish spot that you could drive past on Lake if you didn’t know what you were looking for. Wonderful interior, with lots of exposed wood; Barrels and stools for seating as well as a small bar and a very large rough hewn table. Nice glass windows/doors give you a view into barrels resting in the main brewery along with the main brewhouse. Beers were super solid; I enjoyed a smoked blonde ale, a cascadian dark ale/BIPA, and a few tastes of other stuff. I enjoyed the beers on tap at the source more than I remember from festivals, etc. Smoked beers have sorta been my thing lately, and HammerHeart scratched that itch for sure! Nathaniel (sp?) was very willing to show us around, answer questions ranging from the business side to the brewing side, and was an all around nice guy. I can see myself going back here as often as I am able“

“Cool taproom built onto the front of a warehouse that contains their brewery. Nice gaelic / celtic / gothic feel to the decor inside. Lots of smoked malt in their beers - not really my bag, but I’m reviewing the place and not the beer. Would like to go again when there are not so many people around. Need more places for people to sit or stand around tables.“

Liquor Barrel (Beer Store)
7997 LAKE DR
“The owner of this Liquor Barrel is fan of craft beer. He is very friendly and knowledgeable of different beers. He has held some seasonals and put them on the shelf months after they have sold out elsewhere. He will also place special orders if he is able to get the beer.“

“A small place. They pull off the atmosphere of a cabin or nordic hall fairly well. Large tap list and growlers too. No flights but as noted, cheap short beers. Very loud music. Friendly staff. Worth the drive.“

“Very dark parking lot, aside from that, it was great. $2 "Tasters" so you can try a lot of beers, reasonable priced beers otherwise, 10 different beers on tap and a terrific looking taproom. Lots of wood, cool lights, chandeliers made of antlers, etc. Service was good, beers were good. No food nearby which is too bad.“

Eagle Liquor (Beer Store)
730 APOLLO DR, STE 190
“Started stopping in every couple of weeks because they have a solid singles section with some rather odd beers that are retired and nowhere to be found in the cities. Prices are average as is the service. I can say for being in the outer burbs, this place has a solid selection. If your in the area this is totally worth a stop.“

“Cool new tap room with a decent selection of beers. The food situation is an issue. We called the pizza place just down the road and had them deliver. The owners should set up a collaborative with either a food truck or a local deliver place. Overall, this place is a great start. It is new, and only bound to get better. I recommend visiting.“

“Great new brewery. Inside is very Northwoods-ish with plenty of Viking inspired wood carvings. Usually 6 beers on tap: $3 for small glasses, $5 for pints, $7 for specialties. They are brewing some interesting beers: plenty of smoke, British hops, and barrels. Small patio out front. Can be a bit of a pain to find in the dark with nothing really lighting where to turn until you pass it, but worth checking out.“

“Taproom located in the northern suburbs. We visited on a Saturday night (the 2nd day that they had been opened). I tried all six beers that were on tap. All were decent. They had small pours for $3 or regular pours for more. Decor and beer is supposedly inspired by vikings. Cool little place, I might have to check them out again a few months down the road.“

“Really fun new brewpub in the north metro of Minneapolis. 12 house taps today. 3 bucks for mini snifter pours and about 5 bucks for pints. Excellent beers. Food trucks usually on site. Free parking lot. Cool patio. Flights available now - 4 for $9. Here’s the deal - no one is doing what these guys do - they will smoke anything. Really unique, awesome artisanal product.“
