74 /100 Berdema (Bar) APEIRANTHOS Well this was a pleasant discovery. The mountain village of Apeiranthos -- population 722 -- on the interior of Naxos, gets a thin but steady stream of tourists during high season... but nothing like what Naxos Town or the major beaches south of it see. Yet this café along the quaint stone walking path, and with a wide mountain vista from the back deck, had a more interesting beer selection than anywhere else I’ve found on the island (though it’s all relative, of course). Fresh and fruity if mild Voreia Pils was on tap, with not quite two dozen bottles that included a few Belgian strong ales, Czech Budvar, and a reasonable handful of Greek craft beer. A welcome, shady stop in the middle of the hot drive around the island, neatly planned between Demeter’s Temple and the Kouros, or far-flung Apollon fishing port. Food at Berdema looked pretty simple -- sandwiches and crêpes, at least -- but decent. |
74 /100 Nostimon Hellas (Restaurant) IOANNOU PAPARIGOPOULOU & TRIPODON, AGIOS GEORGIOS On the road heading south from the market square, this is one of a series of atmospheric restaurants with outdoor terraces, most of them full and lively on summer evenings in high season. The eye catcher here is a shiny tap at the bar out front, pouring a Voreia beer (Funky Greek Summer when I visited). The price (€3.50/glass) is comparable with the same-old "Greek" lagers that are otherwise ubiquitous. They also stock about 10 other independent or faux-independent beers, mostly Voreia and Eza. The main event comes from the kitchen though. Wonderful fresh/local-first cooking, slight twists on the traditional, and prices comparable with others on the street once you look closely enough. Nice people too, but around here that almost goes without saying. |
76 /100 Nissaki Beach Hotel (Restaurant) PARALIA AGIOS GEORGIOS Terrific beachfront restaurant, attached to one of the nicer hotels around. The handful of beers were all from independent Greek breweries, like Siris. I think the Voreia Pils might have been on draft. As a bonus, the food was outstanding -- try the mussels steamed in ouzo and lemon zest -- even if slightly more expensive than other, more typical tavernas nearby. Sit right on the beach, your toes in the sand, and snack with some decent (and reasonably priced) beers. |
