50 /100 Golden Lion (JDW) (Bar) 44 HIGH STREET, Standard Spoons, but scruffy on my visit (after the races). Around half of the cask lines were off and no-one seemed interested in putting any new beers on. Disappointing. |
60 /100 Bull (Greene King) (Bar) 62 HIGH STREET, Long narrow traditional pub on the main street through the town. Four or five cask lines offering primarily GK's own beers. GK faux craft plus one or two macro keg lines also. Good atmosphere after a day at the races |
60 /100 Bull (Greene King) (Bar) 62 HIGH STREET, Decent pub with an okay tap selection. The food outshined the selection. Didn’t count but I know they have more taps than 6. Was nice getting a cask. I’ll be back but not because the Beer is amazing. |
52 /100 Golden Lion (JDW) (Bar) 44 HIGH STREET, One of the more depressing spoons, lacking a real character and personality of its own. Selection seems smaller than I'm used to, mostly just the regulars. Cask ale tick was worse than the keg tick, which for me is a warning sign. Grand county tour, county 2, Suffolk, 15:20, 2 halves. |
54 /100 Golden Lion (JDW) (Bar) 44 HIGH STREET, #2 in an epic pub crawl through counties. Not really a fan of pubs which have slot machines. Generic JDW and nothing really special which makes this place to visit again. Found ticks so that was positive. |
50 /100 Golden Lion (JDW) (Bar) 44 HIGH STREET, Pretty standard spoons, but clean bright and fresh, 8 or so taps, but nothing over exciting |
66 /100 Golden Lion (JDW) (Bar) 44 HIGH STREET, Decent Wetherspoons in a town with less beer choice than it should have. Slightly Tardis-like, the crowded main area of the Golden Lion extends to a child-friendly and slightly more spacious back area. A few local real ales will excite the ticker inside you although the overall choice is reasonably safe. Busy on a weeknight and understandably so. |
64 /100 Bull (Greene King) (Bar) 62 HIGH STREET, Convivial and seemingly well-loved boozer on Newmarket High Street. You’ll find 5 real ales here plus a handpull cider. Ok, most were GK but that included Abbot Reserve and their decent Christmas beer. Old Peculier available to boot so that’s pretty cool. The pub itself is open-plan, although there are three reasonably distinct areas: the lounge-y area in front, a more eat-y area along the bar, and a raised area with bare floor in the back showing the racing (what else?) on a big screen. You’re not exactly spoiled for choice in Newmarket, but this is a decent option. |
