72 /100 45 SOUTH CHESTNUT STREET Stopped in here for the second time this year and found more beers on tap (now serving nine), and the beers getting better tasting. The beers' different individual brewers can be identified via the website, and having three different people taking credit for individual beers (signing them, if you will) is probably the best variable to explain the more and better. The brewery itself is tiny -- maybe a half-dozen stools at the bar and a half-dozen tables in a small, recently remodeled building behind Steve's Pizza Palace in downtown Platteville. Put 30 people in this place and it would be jammed. The music is quiet so conversations are easy. There's a fresh supply of popcorn in the corner popper and they're looking into more food choices made in house. Bartenders are immediately available, friendly and willing to offer samples. The 5-oz taster glasses are just $2, so flights are very reasonable. Pints range in cost from $5-$6, so it's hard to spend too much during a visit. Both times I've stopped by late on a Friday afternoon, and both times at least one of the brewers has been hanging out talking beer with customers -- a nice touch for a place still establishing itself in the community. |
60 /100 Kwik Trip - Platteville (Beer Store) 430 S WATER ST Yeah yeah this is a gas station. I’ve been here a million times since I’ve moved here. Behind Piggly Wiggly and Hartig this place has the next best selection and I keep getting new rates from here so I want to be able to add the distro info. It’s a gas station so don’t expect a great selection or knowledgeable beer help. That being said, Kwik Trips can be pretty nice and have a lot of good stuff, so check one out. The staff is also super friendly. |
66 /100 Hartig Drug - Platteville (Beer Store) 180 W PINE You’re probably wondering why this place is even in here. Well, it’s Wisconsin and there’s good beer everywhere. Also, it’s Platteville and basically the only stores to get good beer to take home are Piggly Wiggly, Hartig, and Kwik Trip (yes, the gas station). Also I want to be able to check in and add distro info as necessary. Okay so if you’re in town and only have time for one stop, go to Piggly Wiggly for to go beer and stop by Spirits (2nd & Main) for a pint. So this is a small pharmacy. White, bright, clean. No beer knowledge, but the staff is always friendly and helpful with other stuff. Surprisingly decent beer selection for a small town. I’ve been able to get a handful of new beers here that I didn’t find at Piggly Wiggly, so I decided to finally go ahead and add the place. So... not a destination, but if you’re in town and need some cold medicine and a six pack (note: Dr. Owl does not suggest combining cold medicine and alcohol), then stop on in. I’m not sure how they are on dates, so probably avoid IPAs. In fact unless you know it’s brand new, just avoid IPAs in this town altogether. Also they tend to have low prices and crazy sales on more pedestrian stuff like New Glarus core beers and Potosi, etc. |
68 /100 Piggly Wiggly - Platteville (Grocery Store) 255 MCGREGOR PLAZA Big box grocery store. Decent selection but no singles except a few clearance bottles. Not bad, wish there were more singles. |
70 /100 Steve's Pizza Palace (Restaurant) 175 W MAIN Moved here in fall of 2018 and have been here many times. A decent selection of draft and bottled beers, but they never seem to change. Friendly workers but don’t expect beer knowledge. Food is really good bar food in general, but ironically, the pizza isn’t very good. I’ll back, but it’s not really a beer destination. |
80 /100 Spirits Pub & Grill (2nd & Main Coffeehouse & Pub) (Restaurant) 92 E MAIN ST Moved here in fall of 2018 and have been here several times. This is basically the best craft beer bar/restaurant in town. In this town being key here. Good rotating craft beers on tap. Good food. Nice place and really nice people. Mrs. Owl and I dig this place! |
70 /100 Piggly Wiggly - Platteville (Grocery Store) 255 MCGREGOR PLAZA Moved to Platteville fall of 2018... been here a lot. The short is this is the best package store for craft beer in Platteville. If you’re in town for some reason, just come to Piggly Wiggly. It’s a grocery store. Clean. Decent place. No beer employees or knowledge. Good selection for this town (key: this town). I will be buying lots of beer here as I have no choice. It’s fine. |
