“Inviting space sharing a patio with a BBQ joint and a few other businesses - medium-sized semi-industrial space - decent tap list, though it failed to excite me that much (variety was lacking; mostly ipas, a porter, and a couple lagers; the doppelbock was the most inviting thing to me) - prices were quite good, with half-pours being only 2 bucks during happy hour - service was quite friendly and it generally seemed like a good place for a late-afternoon happy hour sessions - in terms of quality of product and variety, I'd say The Veil down the street has them beat by a lot, but the vibe here is better.“

“Huge industrial-vibe space in a newly-gentrifying area with new fugly apartment construction surrounding industrial space (similar to RiNo in Denver) - impressive selection of good-quality beer - the imperial stouts, in particular, are quite good - we've just started getting their beers distributed in Denver, so I was looking forward to trying at the source, and well everything wasn't great, I was not disappointed - quite a nice selection of cans and bottles to go, as well as neat merch - service was "meh;" servers seemed semi-annoyed taking orders - the food menu looked great, but I did not try any food - it's not a comfortable space, pretty loud, but the quality of the beer would keep me coming back.“

“Located in Scott's Addition right across from Strangeways. Pay per ounce, self pour system. don't believe the Untappd taplist, it's old. About 10 of the 50 taps were empty (and some were wine). Still a cheap way to sample some local beers. Full arcade makes up the other half of this place, so you can entertain yourself and pour your beer.“

“Large, purpose built venue. Taproom on street level and a rooftop patio. Taproom is bare bones cinder block. Smattering of tables and performance space at one end. Live music on this Saturday night. Lots of taps of their average beer in plastic cups. Really? Seems popular although it's not my cup of tea.“

“Looks cated in between Hardywood and Castleburg, this brewery share space with a vodka tasting room in what looks and feels like a big warehouse. Outside is a large performance space and picnic tables. On the Saturday that I was there, they had live music . Flights available, beer is mediocre at best. Good service. Really slow on a Saturday afternoon.“

“Right over the bridge from downtown, high on a bluff, with the view of the James obscured by trees. No TVs but it screams "sports bar". Kind of a 70's look to the whole place. Variety of seating options, including a patio. 18 taps and a cooler with to-go product, including singles. Good service, although more a restaurant style service.“

“This place is located right on the main drag and edge of Scott's Addition. Big open space dedicated to games. Plenty of open space available. Kitchen on site too, looks like snacks and pub grub. Great service and the beer is above average. Taplist could use a little more variety.“

“Place was packed on a Thursady eveening. 2 special events and rain meant everyone was crammed into the small taproom. Quite a lively vibe despite the crowd. Taplist was a lot more varied than the big heavy beers they're known for. Lots of light options and lagers, some IPAs and some Belgians. Pretty solid beers. This place would be amazing on a sunny, clear day.“

“Located in the shadow of Hardywood Park, this small commercial space is made up of a smattering of low tables and chairs along with a small performance space. Poorly done medieval theme does little to improve the vibe. This explains why this place was deserted while Hardywood was bursting at the seams.“

“A block away from the mediocre Richmond staple that is Legend Brewing - nicely renovated industrial space - lots of exposed brick and nicely incorporated old cast-iron equipment - lots of space - small but varied taplist, including some barrel-aged beers - prices were shockingly low (coming from my Denver perspective - I’m used to paying at least 10 bucks for a pour of BA beer and here it was more like 6) - they serve a small selection of food, though I did not try it - super friendly service - really enjoyed the beer and the vibe - recommended stop in the city.“

“The Veil's new Scott's Addition location replaces the previous one, which has shifted to production-only. Like the Forest Hill spot, it's a big, modern, hip space with multiple rooms for seating. There's a large patio in front, two main rooms, a queue for the bar, a lot of coolers with cans, and a bar around the in-house Japanese kitchen. We didn't eat there but the food looks good. Prices are as expected, fair for the quality. It can get very busy at peak hours. The beer is outstanding. Service is good, not necessarily personal but they run the large place well. Along with The Answer, Richmond has a couple truly elite breweries that I wish were in my city.“

“Visited Ardent on a weekend afternoon for a late lunch and beers. It shares a lot with a few other businesses in Scott's Addition, and the beer garden kind of bleeds into those. The spaces are old brick buildings, redone nicely. The interior here is very cool, and the patio is inviting. Friendly, attentive service. Good selection; about 14 drafts and some cans in 4-packs. I only tried a few but the quality was good. Prices were fair. Food is good, too - sandwiches, meat and cheese boards, good kids menu. And if you want something else, there's a barbecue and a burger joint right next door. Really nice place to spend part of the afternoon.“

“Stopped here after a long day of drinking and had dinner. Beers were really nice. Place is cool, bar, restaurant and some Dave & Busters-style arcade games. We were there a bit late, and we saw the place slowly transform from a brewpub into a nightclub, with a bouncer and everything. Very strange (in a good way). Lots of minidresses and guys with too much cologne waiting to enter when we left. Will return, but probably not for the late night ambiance.“

“Went there Summer 2022, Saturday, right at opening. Nice view of the city, in a more remote, quiet-looking area of Richmond. Spacious indoors, with a large patio and grassy area to the side. Got pizza, it was as delicious as the downtown pizza. Beer was fantastic, as always. It's a bit out of the way, but worth a stop by (good to pair with Stone)“

“I've been to the original location before, and driven by the Fredericksburg one. Stopped into the Scott's Addition location in the Summer, then again in December of 2022. Big location, outdoor seating as well. LOTS of options, almost too many. Most beers are tasty, though a lot are gimmicky. Hoppy beers were tasty. Each time I've been there's at least one beer I haven't liked at all and haven't been able to finish. Not a knock, just something I'm reflecting on since most places either have multiple that aren't good or they're all decent to fantastic.“

“"lower score" only reflects the beer section since this is Ratebeer. It's my go-to place for lunch (or supper, or breakfast) when I visit Scott's Addition. Love the food here. A few good local beers, but I often just skip those offerings because the breweries are literally right there.“

“Old school pub with a nice patio overlooking downtown and the James River - newly gentrifying, with a lot of new fugly apartment complexes popping up - this is definitely a holdover from another era - stepping in here I feel like I’m back in the late 90’s craft beer scene, and I’m pretty sure most of the clientele here have been regulars since at least then (hell, maybe this place wasn’t even a brewery then) - okay selection, with a decent assortment of styles, though nothing was stand-out - slow, ambivalent service - overall vibe was like an American version of a soccer pub as imagined by someone who has never been to a British pub and only had someone describe it to them, poorly - solidly on the ‘meh’ scale.“

“Bingo is a large lager-centric brewery in Scott's Addition. The place is a nice renovation of an older building with a large room devoted to arcade games behind a large bar/table area. There's a nice patio in back, too. I counted about 16 taps and roughly the same number of things to go. The beers were all better than expected, too. Quite good. A couple people in our group ordered food and said it was good. It was a weekend night and very crowded, with a crowd that skews younger, but they kept the bar well staffed and moving. Might be good to go earlier when it isn't as crazy but I'm not sure. This is a really fun place.“

Mekong Restaurant (Restaurant)
6004 WEST BROAD STREET
“Mekong is the OG Richmond beer spot and I'm honored to have finally made it. It's not much from the outside - or inside, really, as it's a nondescript strip mall storefront and a highly lit Vietnamese restaurant. But the food menu and beer list are top-notch. Tons of variety and the highest quality. The service was very good. They don't have a bottle list but will let you check out the coolers, which have a ton of vintage bottles from all over the place. Excellent variety on the taps, too. Great mix of breweries and styles. The prices are fair. Overall, an essential Richmond visit.“

“The Answer is on the backside of Mekong, with its own lot and entrance and not connected (to the pubic) internally. They weren't super busy when we showed up and had plenty of open tables but weren't willing to put them together for a larger group. Splitting up worked fine. There are dozens of taps here, just a crazy amount. I went with stout flights and had 10 stouts to choose from. They were amazing. Loads of hops and sours and other stuff, too. The to-go options were more limited than the taps, with mostly hoppy options. The service was a little sporadic; good for a while and then I think there was a shift change and we got a little lost in the shuffle at times. The food is really good, too. Overall, along with The Veil and Mekong, this is an essential Richmond stop.“

“Penny Lane is a traditional British-style pub in downtown Richmond, apparently founded and still owned by a guy from Liverpool - doesn't take long to figure that part out. There are about a dozen taps and most are fairly obvious - Guinness, a couple brown ales and mainstream English ales, just a few American crafts - but they make sense for the place. Big pint glasses. The service is slow but we were in no hurry. The food is hearty and good. Prices are fair. Overall, a worthy stop downtown and the place to go for soccer. It might not be a place worth entering in 2022 but I see that someone entered it in 2005.“

92 /100 4910 FOREST HILL AVE.
“The first Veil location I was able to visit, the Forest Hill location is a big, nice, clean, modern building in the Forest Hill neighborhood of Richmond. There's a smallish parking lot around back and a decent sized patio leading into the building. There's a queue for the main bar on the first floor, which has a food counter off to the side. The upstairs bar is open during busier hours. In addition to the extra bar and some booths, there's a half-open upstairs terrace that can be closed up when it's colder. There were about 30 things on tap when I visited and almost 40 to-go options in cans or bottles. Stunning selection. The service was very good; they keep the line moving quickly and are friendly and good at what they do. The food (Mexican) menu is short but solid. Prices are all fair for what you get, and the beer is excellent across the board. Man, this place is impressive. Many levels above anything I can get in Cincinnati. Can't wait to come back and visit here again, as well as their other locations.“

“Nice brewery in Scott's Addition, nearby many other breweries. On a Sunday night it was relatively empty. Graham cracker smores stout was good as was the Cashmere NEIPA. Probably could have spent more time here, but it's tough with so many good breweries in a dense location. Worth a stop though.“

“A smaller place in downtown Richmond. Kind of empty on a Saturday night though. Beers were solid and interesting/varied (NEIPA, coffee impy, sour ale with peach and tea, imperial stout aged in port wine barrels). Some TVs inside, games to play, a chill spot. My only gripe was the food menu which was way overpriced for the quality. They have a very small menu with a couple appetizers and pizza. I split a veggie pizza, which was basically just a small frozen thin crust pizza that they put in the microwave but it was $16. For that price I'd expect a decent sized freshly cooked pizza! The pizza I got was fine, but probably only worth about $8. Still, the beer was good, and the location is convenient if you're staying downtown.“

“Solid brewpub in Richmond. On a commercial highway outside the city center (accessible by Uber, but not easy!). A pretty large place, plenty of seating, TVs. They have an extensive tap list, and a lot of interesting beers. They have a large selection of imperial stouts (German chocolate cake, French vanilla coffee, coffee maple syrup vanilla, coconut, banana cinnamon and peanut butter. Anyway, I got a sampler which was very helpful. There will certainly be plenty of beers you will want to sample. They have a food menu I believe but I didn't order any food. If you like specialty imperial stouts, definitely worth a stop, but they have plenty of other beers too. Plan to spend awhile here.“

“Huge place in Richmond, near Hardywood. Parking is very difficult at popular times (ie Friday night) - had to park way down the street. They have a huge outdoor setup for outdoor music and there is also lots of indoor space and an indoor stage (unused when I was there). It was pretty empty inside on a Friday night although outdoors was packed. They have a decent number of taps. None of the beers was particularly great, but all solid (smores stout, coffee stout, belgian witbier). They have some games, TVs. No food. Worth a stop, but probably better beer elsewhere.“
