92 /100 301 MAIN STREET Steinbach's first brewery! And, finally a place to meet friends, without the disruption/distraction of big-screen TVs. The sleek, modern, yet welcoming decor of this small friendly pub features wood salvaged from a Manitoban grain elevator. There's a variety of seating to facilitate whatever kind of experience you're after -- looking contemplatively out the window, seated at the bar to chat with the brewer, 3 couches where you can kick back and play a few of the board games tucked beneath the coffee tables, and various tables of two, many of which can be easily configured to seat more. This place is impeccably clean, and the space makes conversation and community quite easy, but if you wish to be left alone, that's easy to achieve as well. Oh, and it's an art gallery, with installations that change every few months. A lot of fun to sip these brews and discuss art. Okay, the beer! I constantly order the maple porter right now, but the weisbeir is a new favourite for me. I've heard people gush their love for the cascade APA. I'm a fan of the citra. There are 8 taps that they intend to get all up and running, but at the moment just 4 are dispensing tasty beers. The beer selection changes regularly because it's a microbrewery so there's always something new coming up next. Everyone working here is an actual owner, which impacts the experience as well, since they're genuinely invested. The level of care, creativity, and craft you'll encounter here is top-notch. Located in downtown Steinbach near the clocktower. Growlers available for purchase (and fill). My favourite place to meet friends! There's no food available here (well, little snacks, yes) but they encourage patrons to get food delivered -- each table has a QR linked to Skip the Dishes. Pretty fun to get pizza delivered to your table while you're sitting there sipping a delicious porter. 10/10 would recommend! |
88 /100 301 MAIN STREET I can't believe a place like this is in Steinbach. A must visit when you're in town. Right on Main Street. Small, but cozy. Fabulous art on the wall. Tasty beer. Highly recommended. |
62 /100 Frantz Inn (Beer Store) HWY 12 EAST Still mostly caters to the macro crowd, but it's open until 2:30 Am so that's convenient, and they do have a few nice beers like Unibroue Trois Pistoles and Little Brown Jug 1919.
2014 rating: A bar and a beer store - just across the line to keep in legal when Steinbach was under prohibition. There are a couple worthwhile mainstream beers here like Hoegaarden, but this mostly caters to the Lab Lite crowd. Re-rate - the selection has improved a bit. Now featuring some nice Unibroue beers. |
48 /100 Frantz Inn (Beer Store) HWY 12 EAST Not a great bar scene. The standard selection of macrobrews and what counts for "premium" and imports at most small-town places and sports bars. However the restaurant side is pretty decent with good food and a nicer atmosphere. As for the beer store - the selection has improved a lot in the past few years. Starting to see a few bombers from larger Canadian craft breweries on the shelf. |
62 /100 Manitoba Liquor Mart - Steinbach (Beer Store) UNIT A - 118 PTH 12N 2019 review: Well after an improvement a few years ago, this place is on the decline again. The growler bars have been removed (as in all Manitoba government stores) and the over all selection is not as wide as it once was. Sad.
2015: Beer selection has improved a lot. Still not as good as the best Winnipeg stores but getting closer. Now has a growler bar with limited edition local beers. 2011 review: Given that Steinbach was a dry town until recently, this place has a surprisingly good selection. Occasionally carries Trappists and rotates through a nice, but small, selection of microbrews.
2014 review: Newly renovated and much larger, which has meant a slightly larger selection of craft beers but still not impressive. |
62 /100 Sawney Bean’s (Restaurant) 340 MAIN STREET Some decent food, some just okay. Not a great beer selection - with the only craft being the new addition of Half Pints - but I appreciate that the rest isn’t just lagers. Guinness, Kilkenny, Newcastle, ciders - at least you’ve got options. I like the ambiance here, and I’ve generally had good service. Being the only real pub choice in town and better than the other lounges and bars, it’s my first choice in Steinbach. |
56 /100 Manitoba Liquor Mart - Steinbach (Beer Store) UNIT A - 118 PTH 12N Definitely one of the poorer selections as far as Liquor Mart locations in Manitoba, but it seems to be improving thanks to the guys buying craft beer in Steinbach. Obviously better than the beer vendor, and most of the local restaurants don’t have much either, so it’s your best bet when in Steinbach. |
32 /100 Boston Pizza (Restaurant) 182 PTH 12 NORTH It’s a Boston Pizza, what can you really expect? A bunch of lagers, plus Rickards White and Red. Hit-and-miss service (usually miss in my experience). Mediocre food at kind of high prices. One thing that seems unique to this location is the large, very bright projector that shows games in the small lounge - it gives the lounge a very artificial and abrasive lighting after dark. |
54 /100 R-Bistro/The Edge (Bar) HWY 12 EAST Nice improvements to the restaurant, though the bar (Edge) is still a hick nightclub. Perhaps a couple good beers here. Decent food in the restaurant (R-Bistro). This is connected to Frantz Motor Inn which is a hotel and cold beer vendor.
Re-rate. The trick here is to ask for the bottle selection from the vendor, in which case I got Trois Pistoles. Anything the vendor sells you can have with your meal. That’s pretty cool. So their actual beer menu is nothing special, but if you look at the vendor list it’s better. Certainly the only restaurant in Steinbach where you can have a Unibroue with your meal. |
36 /100 Boston Pizza (Restaurant) 182 PTH 12 NORTH Not a place for craft beer - the best they have is Rickards White. The only reason it’s worth mentioning on here is that it was the "Boston Pizza Law" that got persuaded Steinbachers to vote for liquor liceneses in the first place. Thanks, Boston Pizza, now stop sucking. |
28 /100 Boston Pizza (Restaurant) 182 PTH 12 NORTH Horrible Macro Lagers. Pretty good sports bar environment, good pizza. Bad beer selection. Too pricey for what they pour and serve. |
60 /100 Smitty’s (Lounge) (Restaurant) 145 PARK RD. W. Nice looking place. Good sports bar atmosphere. Beer selection is fairly woeful. Fort garry dark being the best of a sorry bunch of beers. Food and value is good though. Steinbach’s best bar. But that’s not saying much. The wings are very good. |
60 /100 Smitty’s (Lounge) (Restaurant) 145 PARK RD. W. An enjoyable place by Steinbach standards, and although there isn’t anything that technically qualifies as "craft" beer, it still has the best selection of taps in Steinbach. Like to see some Half Pints here, but Fort Garry and Shock Top and Farmery will have to do...which sounds funny, but this is a small town that banned alcohol until recently. The service was very friendly and conscientious. |
38 /100 Home Wine & Brew (Homebrew Shop) 423 MAIN ST Great place to get supplies for home made wines & beer. Samples available. |
56 /100 The Village Green Restaurant (Restaurant) 350 PARK ROAD EAST One of my favourite golf courses. Pretty good food too. Nothing that will blow your socks off, but decent food. Nothing very interesting in the way of beer. |
54 /100 The Village Green Restaurant (Restaurant) 350 PARK ROAD EAST Well, if you’re in Steinbach, and you’re golfing, this is a good place for food, but not a great beer selection. Beautiful restaurant and better than average food. Could do with some taps, and some microbrews. Like to see some Half Pints here.
Update: they now have two taps here. |
46 /100 Frantz Inn (Beer Store) HWY 12 EAST The bar is nothing special, the restaurant has some decent food. Beer selection isn’t great. Very average bar. Restaurant renos are being done this summer though. Looking forward to the changes. |
58 /100 Manitoba Liquor Mart - Steinbach (Beer Store) UNIT A - 118 PTH 12N Nice little liquor mart in Steinbach. Small, nice people, ok selection. Their beer selection gets a little better all the time. By steinbach standards...it is a good place. |
50 /100 Sawney Bean’s (Restaurant) 340 MAIN STREET Food is decent. A fair selection of underwhelming beer. I find service to be hit and miss at times. Don’t order the curry. But I guess for a place like Steinbach, it’s a lot better then some other restaurants we have. |
46 /100 Frantz Inn (Beer Store) HWY 12 EAST Well, I don’t go here often, but it’s the only actual bar in Steinbach. The selection is mostly pale lagers and the crowd is redneck, but they do have a few decent beers. |
66 /100 Manitoba Liquor Mart - Steinbach (Beer Store) UNIT A - 118 PTH 12N Staff is friendly, but not always very knowledgeable about beer. Selection is okay, the best in Steinbach area, but the Winnipeg stores are better, and even those are not great by world standards. |
70 /100 Sawney Bean’s (Restaurant) 340 MAIN STREET The food isn’t amazing, but it’s makes a good accompaniment for beer. Beer selection is better than you’ll find elsewhere in Steinbach right now, but not stellar. Ambience is pretty good - homey pub feel. |
54 /100 Euro Store (Beer Store) 267 MAIN STREET This is not a beer store, but a store that specializes in Eastern European food. This is the only place to go in the area to get kvas. |
70 /100 Sawney Bean’s (Restaurant) 340 MAIN STREET 2019 review: Yes! They're finally bringing in craft beer on tap here. A small step, but a good one! You can get Torque and Half Pints on tap and one rotating local tap. As well, you can get Trans Canada and Barn Hammer cans. Keep on doing this, Sawney Beans. The best place for craft beer in Steinbach.
2011 review:
For a small town, and a town that once banned the sale of alcohol, this is a definite step in the right direction. The only place in Steinbach to get beer on tap - Guinness, Harp, Keiths, Kilkenny and usually a cider of some sort. Decent pub food, too. Update: this is now officially the only place in Steinbach to have any real craft beer on tap as they now have Half Pints beer. |
