“Quite a large pub at the Western end of the town centre, handily placed near to the main bus stops. It's a Marstons pub and carries just their range. Managed to watch some cricket while waiting for a bus to get me out of Stroud.“

Retreat (Bar)
28 CHURCH STREET
“This pub is tucked away down a pedestrianised street near the centre of Stroud, one of the very few pubs open on a Monday lunch-time. Just 2 beers on hand pump, the kegs were all national normals. They had a Bristol Beer Factory beer on and an Otter, both of which are standard offerings. A few people came in looking for lunch. Not really a Ratebeer type place.“

Stroud Wine Company (Beer Store)
5 WITHEYS YARD, 55 HIGH STREET
“This is a Wine Shop just off the main High Street but well signed. It carries roughly 100 beers from quite a spread of Brewers. Local breweries plus more from further appeal, I picked up a new German and new Swedish Brewery to me. Worth popping in, it was the only place in Stroud that I picked up anything interesting.“

“Smallish pub in town center. 4 casks, 4 ciders and one keg on tap. Seemed like mostly local beer. Quality was so so. They do have some bottles as well, but nothing too interesting. Friendly owner, somewhat peculiar patrons and atmosphere. Worth checking out if you're in town.“

Ale House (Bar)
9 JOHN STREET
“Large place spreading over two rooms. Bar room is more like a hall, with bar on the one end and working fireplace and couch on the other side. Somehow it still seems cozy despite the size. Selection consisted of 12 taps, but for some reason there were 8 or 9 pale ales which I found to be odd. According to barman it was just a coincidence, but I still think they should manage their beers better. Selection is focused on local small breweries, so a lots of new ticks. I liked Iford cider, it was really superb. If you're in town it's say it's a must visit.“

“Medium sized pub inside a B&B. Seems like your average pub, popular with locals. They do have 5 casks, mostly well known ones like Tribute and Big Job. London Fields Hackney Hopster was new for me. I'd say the beer wasn't in top shape either. Food was surprisingly good, really enjoyed the dinner. Not a must visit pub for beer drinkers by any means, however good accommodation and food.“

Ale House (Bar)
9 JOHN STREET
“Visited April '19. As others have described this is a grand old Georgian style building probably some sort of religious or commercial meeting rooms I would imagine. It gives a slightly odd atmosphere for a pub but you cannot fault the beer choices nor effort that has gone in to it. Certainly the best pub for many a mile around here.“

“Visited April '19. Initially I though that this was a relatively small Wetherspoons, but at the far end there is a whole extra area with lots of seating and seemingly a small patio too. All the usual fixtures, the bar is to the right on entry. A smaller range of beers than many though and the service is somewhat tardy behind the bar. The place just feels a little tired to me, somewhat worn.“

“A micropub in the centre of stroud, visited in March 2017. Follows the micropub model in that it serves three beers straight from the barrel, but goes further by offering a decent range of bottled beers, both Belgian and local, plus gins and coffees. Has a link to Clearwater brewery, so expect to see one of its beers on sale. Service was friendly and the atmosphere pleasant. A decent place to visit.“

“Visited in March 2017. Lively pub on a hillside overlooking the London Road. Four cask ales were on offer, plus one on keg and a couple of ciders. Landlord was friendly and service brisk on a day when the pub was packed with people watching the Six Nations rugby. A useful stop on the walk from Stroud town centre to the Stroud brewery tap in Thrupp.“

“Visited June 2016. Large pub in an old Georgian building in the centre of Stroud. Offers a dozen or so ales, with an emphasis on local ones and the hoppy. A pleasant place to have a drink and my favourite pub in Stroud.“

Ale House (Bar)
9 JOHN STREET
“Situated in a large corner building the focus is within a very high ceiling main hall. The bar only stocks real ale and the pumps are into double figures, the rotation is as good as the selection and all tastes are catered for. If you’re not a regular you might be greeted by the resident dog which is huge, but its also a big softy so don’t feel threatened by it, he’ll more than likely go and sit on one of the leather sofas closest to the roaring open fire once he’s welcomed you. You can play raise the eyebrow with him from a distance! There’s also a beer garden connected to the main hall.“

“Wetherspoon with a preference for warm and cosy traditional decor. On my visit the walls and carpets were red complimented by some nice wooden panels (and tables) throughout in a style very familiar for this chain. It also had a very young crowd doing some convivial drinking in the early evening during midweek. Ale was on two rows of pumps at the bar and there is a small patio area at the rear.“
