“Moderner Brewpub. Hier werden live 4 eigene Biere gebraut. Alle von sehr gut bis solide. Essen ist auch sehr gut. Bester Laden bisher in UB. Besuch ist Pflicht!“

“Irish-style pub in Ulaanbaatar. Quite large garden, few Mongolian beers available, friendly staff. Decent place.“

“Strangely, this restaurant is part of an American chain but it got good reviews so we decided to eat there one evening. The food was pretty good - an all you can eat buffet where you choose your ingredients then pass them to a chef who cooks them up on a large griddle. I hadn’t expected to find much in the way of beer there apart from the near-ubiquitous Chinggis but - also rather strangely - they had draught beers from an Austrian brewpub! It was Salm Brau unfiltered pilsen and marzen and billed as freshly brewed but unfortunately I wasn’t able to establish whether it’s shipped in or brewed on the premises. They also have a draught Chinggis and a few bottles. (Visited 15 September 2013).“

“Khan Brau’s Brau Haus is a large place in a modern building on Seoul Street. It has a low ceiling and lots of dark wood, which made it a bit gloomy in my opinion. There’s half a copper on the bar but the brewing kit is in a tiled room off to one side. The beer, all served in large mugs with handles, tasted very soapy and wasn’t at all good. “The Dublin Irish Pub is upstairs in a row of buildings about half way along Seoul Street. It’s fitted out to look like a pub from the Emerald Isle, with lots of dark polished wood, the menu (exclusively in English) chalked up on green blackboards and western music playing in the background. Predictably, it’s an ex-pat haunt but it was rather quiet when I visited. They have three draught beers (Chinggis, Golden Gobi and Khar Khorum - the most commonly found beers in Ulaanbaatar) plus five or eight bottles. (Visited 15 September 2013).“

“I liked MB Beer Plus and visited several times, and not just because my travelling companion took a shine to one of the handsome young waiters! It’s a modern brewpub, all glass and steel on the outside and stylish furnishings inside - leather armchairs arranged around candlelit dark wood tables, soft lighting, a nice tiled panel on the back wall and a trendy backlit bar. There are also two large copper brewing kettles on display although I think the main business of brewing is done in a room at the side. They have four very drinkable draught beers (available in four litre jugs as well as smaller measures), the service was delightful and the food was pretty good too. (Last visited 17 September 2013).“

“The Chinggis Beer Club has a very European feel - lots of wood and a bar which wouldn’t look out of place in an English pub - but it’s rather a dingy place; a bit shabby in fact although the service was friendly enough and this is, after all, a small brewery which has made a name for itself and become well established supplying many local bars and restaurants with beer. There were just two beers on draught when I visited - the pilsener and the classic (dark), both apparently produced in line with the Reinheitsgebot. The menu also has a European flavour with old favourites such as spaghetti bolognaise, pork knuckle, sausages, soups and snacks. We had breakfast here one morning and I think my arteries are still recovering. (Last visited 16 September 2013).“

State Department Store (Grocery Store)

“The State Department Store is a huge monumental building reminiscent of the Soviet era set back from Peace Avenue not far from Sukhbaatar Square. It’s much like any other department store really and has five floors. There’s a food supermarket at the back of the ground floor, with an aisle of beers. The beer selection isn’t huge but you can pick up some of the Mongolian ones and, if you’re so inclined, foreign beers mainly from macro breweries. (Last visited 17 September 2013).“

“The Blue Sky Lounge is at the very top of the Blue Sky Hotel and Tower - the huge curved glass edifice rising like a ship’s sail at the bottom end of Sukhbaatar Square. In real life it’s difficult to miss but it’s shown in the wrong place on the beer map here. Go through reception to the lift at the back which whisks you to the very top of the building in no time. The bar doesn’t have particularly exciting beers but I can’t think of anywhere better to enjoy a glass of Altan Gobi or Khar Khorum - the views are absolutely stunning. They also do nice snacks. We had a cheese platter - five different local cheeses with biscuits, grapes and peanuts. It wasn’t cheap (although the beer is reasonably priced) but then this is probably one of the swankiest hotels in the country. (Visited 15 September 2013).“

“We wish we could have spent longer here. A classic modern brewpub with all the spotless brewing equipment on show. We tried the dark and the unfiltered pilsner both of which were very good indeed.“

“The beer wasn’t as bad as I was expecting except the weizen which was awful. Best stick to the unfiltered pils. Getting served at lunchtime when we were only the 3rd table occupied was a nightmare. Consequently we gave up on ordering food. Also they would only serve us half litres so we couldn’t try all we wanted. That didn’t impress my wife. Within the building is a bakery or possibly just an artisans style bread shop. Either way the products are fantastic.“

“This is about 10 to 15 minutes walk north of Sukhbaatar Square and is on the left hand side of the road We nearly gave up but it’s worth a few beers. Just a light and dark on but ok. It’s bit dark inside and a few of the locals had a few too many but still pleased we made the effort“

“Loud, party atmosphere is fun. Location is good, too. But godawful terrible beers--worst beer in UB!“

“MB = Mongolian Beer. A surprise. Does not look like a brewpub on the outside. Huge office building with mirrored windows near the pink columned building near the main square and not far from the Chinggis Cafe and the Irish bar. Beer was generally better than expected. So was the atmosphere, actually--very new and modern. Sort of a sports bar with expat and local crowd, about as yuppie as UB can get. Overpriced in general.“

“Modern-looking place with sofas and televisions and things like that. They offer Spanish-influenced food (not good enough to be considered real Spanish food) and four house beers. Two of the beers were pretty good, two were not. Feels like a movers and shakers kind of place, certainly by Mongolian standards.“

“Big premises on Seoul Street, with a lively crowd and a front patio. Khan Brau is the oldest microbrewery in Mongolia but the beers have clearly seen better days. Worth a stop, and of course there’s lots of good Korean food in the neighbourhood.“

“The original Chinggis location (they now have the Beer Hall and another location near the Nadaam site). This is older, wooden, worn-in and I think a more European feel. Just two beers on when we visited. Nice enough place, but it’s a bit of a trek north from Sukhbaatar Square and didn’t really compel a return visit.“

“Historic brewpub that has seen better days. The beer, service, and ambiance are all better at the newer Chinggis Beer Hall but it’s still worth popping in here.“
