66 /100 BrewChimp Urmston (Bar) 192 CHURCH ROAD On the main road west of Urmston on the south side of the railway, this is the more convivial of the two BrewChimp venues in close proximity. This one is a tad smaller but carries a better selection of brews including four cask ales, all from local microbrewers when I visited. |
78 /100 Craft Brewtique (Beer Store) 74 FLIXTON ROAD Opposite the Wetherspoon pub on the road north side of the station, this is a small one room bottle shop, but mostly cans, all from the best and funkiest brewers up and down the country, although there's no shortage of regional stuff in here. There's a table at the rear opposite the till if you wish to drink in, but there's no draft available. |
68 /100 Assembly (Bar) 31 STATION ROAD On the main road south of the station in a large shop unit just before they end and give way to residential areas. The venue encompasses the second floor too so there's lots of table space on the ground floor, mostly at the front as the bar is against the side wall at the rear with a row of worthwhile keg option from craft brewers up and down the country as well as from the local area, backed up by a couple of microbrewed cask ales. Toilets are upstairs where some more seating exists. They show football on the big screen. |
68 /100 33 FLIXTON ROAD Close to the Wetherspoon, it's a shop unit conversion with a purpose built central bar area, and the lion share of seats behind, although there's a few tables at the front where fridges full of craft cans and bottles also exist. There's both cask and keg to choose from with decent local or regional options from microbreweries found here. |
60 /100 Fox (Restaurant) 201 WOODSEND ROAD In the far North-Western part of Urmston where the houses have to finally give way to the Manchester Ship Canal, this pub in an older building has a lovely look and atmosphere. It’s traditional in style but the furniture is slightly more newer in design and it feels fresh. It’s a one room affair but a large one with a couple of central pillars backed by wooden panels. Dining plays a large part in this pubs fortunes and it has a restaurant section beyond the main bar, but you can eat here too. There’s two cask ale pumps and both were full courtesy of the Caledonian Brewery during my visit, and Theakston’s Best Bitter was available in keg form. The car park is at the front of the building and is large enough, the patio area is the the pubs side and is not large enough! |
54 /100 Bird i’th Hand (Bar) FLIXTON ROAD In its own large red brick building, this pub is convivial and serves a very low-rise leafy area of west-Manchester. It’s a very familiar set-up with a big central bar separating two distinct areas, the bar side with pub games available and a very plain best room area that is used for dining as well as drinking. There’s plenty of room in both and there’s a relatively large fenced garden area at the rear with a grass square suitable for children to play on. The large car park is next to this. There’s no real ales but a couple of Theakston beers out of keg. This place also shows live sport. |
72 /100 Steamhouse (Bar) STATION ROAD good range of real ales and continental beers. friendly knowledgeable bar staff. |
70 /100 Steamhouse (Bar) STATION ROAD Umston’s station house has been put to great use with its collection of bohemianesque open rooms either side of the main central bar area that stocks a great range of real ales. It serves food, dogs are also allowed to inside. It’s patio area faces right onto the platform, which makes it the best National Rail Station in the area for drinking and catching a train towards Liverpool as you just have sip up and exit through the gate as pulls in. There are a few picnic tables on the other side of the building but there is a less attractive car park as your view. |
52 /100 Tim Bobbin (JDW) (Bar) 41 FLIXTON ROAD Popular but ordinary Wetherspoon pub lacking the attention to detail in the furnishing. The usual range of ales and beers are available and there is clearly a loyal local clientele with message boards to indicate this. |
68 /100 Steamhouse (Bar) STATION ROAD Good beer (4 pumps at the moment) usually from Hydes, Hornbeam, Dunham Massey, Coach House and Bazens). Good value, tastey food with friendly staff. No TV or video games |
