Otter’s Tears (Beer Store)
24 QUEEN STREET,
“I went quite out of my way to find this place, and I wasn't disappointed. Otter's Tears is small, with five long shelves of beers and two fridges. However there's no filler here; not only is every beer something you'd want to drink, but there were some beers and breweries that I'd not heard of. The prices are incredibly low, even for the area. I never had the honour of meeting Simon Johnson, but this is a shop to make Old Unobtainable a little bit, erm, obtainable. Not to be missed if you're anywhere near Burslem.“

Otter’s Tears (Beer Store)
24 QUEEN STREET,
“*Please note, my rating is for the online shop.I purchased from here just before Christmas 2017. The choice was very good. I picked up some great beers including a couple of American offerings and also the Barley Wine brewed in rememberance of Simon Johnson whose quote in the Craft Beer Manifesto gave this shop it's name. The pricing was fair, however the delivery was possibly a little bit more expensive than some online

I had a slight issue in that my order which was split into two didn't arrive at the same time one box arrived but the other didn't. I called Phil the owner who was brilliant and extremely helpful, he contacted the courier but it seemed that the assumption was that it had been lost in transit. Phil arranged for a replacement to be sent out but then within a couple of days I had both the replacement and the original which miraculously materialised, I recontacted Phil to explain what had happened and was thanked for my honesty,. I purchased the other case off of Phil to save him the hassle of having to arrange a collection. So all in all despite the hiccup with the courier which wasn't the fault of Otter's Tears this was a great online experience.“

“Located near the Duke William and Otters Tears, this is a old-school Titanic pub with all the aging pub decor to go with it. No music of course. Lots of box cider (around 7 or 8 if I remember rightly), plenty of Titanic on draft and bottle with a couple of that there fizzy craft keg stuff. Relaxing place for a quiet pint overlooking the small square.“

“Great little bottle shop, well stocked with all the main players of the modern craft beer scene, lots of new releases, lots of unfamiliar American releases, all at very reasonable prices. Clearly the owner knows his stuff, and was extremely friendly, talkative and helpful during our visit. Just what you want from a good bottle shop. I understand there was a bar area downstairs which has now closed, although there is one draft line remaining for takeouts only. Seemed the best option in the Stoke / Newcastle area.“

“A small shop with an interesting selection, clearly chosen by someone with a good understanding of the modern beer scene. Just down the road from my mother’s house, so I’ll be calling again.“

“Another new bottle shop, this one owned by the writer of the Beersay beer blog. Very interesting selection of bottled beer, currently 1 keg beer which was from Mad Hatter on my 1st visit. This will be a regular haunt for me and it’s just round the corner from some good pubs.“

“If you’re in Burslem it’s worth popping in here to look at the interior, a proper old fashioned hotel bar.. Beer range is average and I have to say the beer quality was not great. Shame.“

“Done in the style of a micro pub with 4 real ales and 2 real ciders. Nicely done with the barrels behind a glass frontage. There is also an upstairs room and seating outside. There’s now a decent beery crawl in Burslem. Close to Post Office Vaults, Leopard Hotel, Duke William and Bulls Head. There’ll be ticks even for the seasoned rater.“

“A few steps from the Duke William. Titanic’s tap was smaller than I expected. Usual Titanic range and 3 guests on offer. An excellent barman and the pork pie was good too!“

“On the square in the centre of Burslem. An imposing pub that has Victorian glamour in bounds. Good selection of ale, well kept. Surprisingly quiet on a Saturday afternoon.“

“In the centre of Burslem, attractive postal front, quite small inside.. Friendly atmosphere but the beer range is rather uninspiring considering they have 6 pumps. Better options close by. Visited 1/4/15. Now 4 real ales that never change, kept in good nick.“

“Just up the hill from the Bulls Head and with a seemingly wider choice of real ale. Another solidly built Victorian town pub, that doesn’t seem to have changed much in 150 years. Mainly Oakham beers available - not what I expected, but nice to find!“

“A solidly built Victorian pub, full of mahogany, serving good beer (and cider) with no nonsense. Only Titanic standards and Everards Tiger on handpump - but a short list of Belgian and Dutch bottles as well.“

“One of the most interesting pubs you’ll go in regarding character and history, has been featured on Most Haunted and was supposedly the pub that Josiah Wedgewood and James Brindley would discuss their work in. Whilst full of great character, the selection is lacking and the beer has been of very poor quality every time I’ve been, usually warm and flat. Whether I’ve just had bad luck or whether they just can’t keep a beer, it ruins what could be a great pub.“

“Probably the best selection of beers in Stoke-on-Trent, many bottles that constantly change, a wide range of De Molen beers, several Titanic Beers always on tap aswell as several kegged beers. Very nicely decorated with friendly and knowledgeable staff. Only drawback can be the price, especially with the bottles, but overall, a cracking pub, one of the best in the area. All ales are kept exceptionally well.“

“In Burlsem town centre, very close to several other real ale pubs, the Duke William stands out with it’s mock-tudor style and beautiful interior. 8 cask pumps with at least 4 constantly rotated, usually priced at £3 a pint. Whilst I’ve not tried the food, it looks to be to a very high standard. A small bottle selection in the fridge, as well as Fruli on keg. Great pub with fantastic ales, absolutely full of character.“
