80 /100 BottleCraft (Beer Store) 33 PICCADILLY BottleCraft is in the middle of Hanley, within a couple minutes' walking distance from the intu Potteries shopping centre. The beer list is impressive, even though on my early Wednesday afternoon visit only about half were operational. (No problem there as they still had far more beers than I could try!) Beers from Wiper & True, Inadequate, Amundsen and Anarchy were available among a few others; they also had a couple of fridges of beers from local, UK-wide and continental breweries. An excellent full-on craft beer run by people with an obvious passion for beer. |
84 /100 BottleCraft (Beer Store) 33 PICCADILLY A bottle shop and bar based in the ‘cultural’ quarter of town. Up to 12 craft beers on draught (most are from highly reviewed breweries) real cider and a great range of fairly priced beers to takeout and/or drink in. Very knowledgable owners, cool benches downstairs and a spacious upstairs seating area overlooking the street. My go to bar in Hanley. |
80 /100 BottleCraft (Beer Store) 33 PICCADILLY Finally got to see Bottlecraft's new premises. My knowledge of Stoke / Hanley isn't great so I don't know if it's near the old place, but this definitely seems to be in a more central location. Much larger layout with a good upstairs seating area and benches outside. Also, very pleased to hear some actual MUSIC, not sure why this is such a big deal in other places. Lots of bottles at very good prices on the left, with a double fridge and shelving. On the right there's the bar with around 12 draft options. Friendly chap on behind the bar. Has an indie-rock feel about the place. Definitely my favourite bar in the area. Review from 2017. Small box-shop converted into a bar / bottle shop, bottles lined along wooden shelving on the right, basic wooden bar on the left. 4 keg beers on draft on our visit, all served as 2/3s only. Only found out after I ordered a half, and was given a 2/3 serving instead. Still, despite that, I kind of warmed to this place especially after the previous two CAMRA pubs we visited lacked any kind of atmosphere. Here there was good 80s rock and a young crowd enjoying great beer. Good bottle range too. Yeah I’d probably hang out here if I lived nearby. |
72 /100 Ale Corner (Bar) 66 STAFFORD STREET New micro pub close to the main shopping area. Decor is very spartan but is probably a work in progress. 4 ales and 4 ciders, selection was OK but nothing new on my first visit. Beer was in good nick. A welcome addition to Hanley and will observe with interest. |
84 /100 BottleCraft (Beer Store) 33 PICCADILLY Small bottle shop with tables so that you can sit and drink your selection. 1 keg beer on also. Not a massive selection but plenty to keep you interested and they’ve only been open 10 weeks so I’m sure the range will increase. Owners are friendly and there’s a relaxed atmosphere here. Definitely the best place for a drink in Hanley at the moment. |
48 /100 Reginald Mitchell (JDW) (Bar) THE TONTINE, 20 PARLIAMENT ROW This just proves how I don’t tend to seek out Wetherspoons as it’s just a 30 minute bus ride from my house! Very good conversion of an old market hall. Decent selection of ale and the ones I tried were in good condition.
Update 22/11/14. It’s irrelevant if you’ve got beer, food whatever if you ignore customers. This is the 2nd pub I’ve ever walked out of. It wasn’t even that busy
Update 11/5/15. Asked for 2 beers, neither on even though the pump clips were not turned round or available soon on them. This place doesn’t help itself.. |
78 /100 Coachmakers Arms (Bar) 65 LICHFIELD STREET My review from June 2011 - A multi roomed traditional pub very close to Hanley Bus Station. A fast changing range of ales from breweries far and wide. Midlands breweries are well represented. A proper pub which unfortunately under threat of closure with the regeneration of Hanley.
Update October 2014 - the beer range has become less inspiring but it’s still a friendly pub and still under threat of closure. The new bus station is now opposite and there is pay and display outside of the pub. |
88 /100 Victoria Lounge Bar (Bar) 5 ADVENTURE PLACE Situated next to the Hanley bus station and Victoria Theatre this is a very welcoming bar with 6 real ales on offer. Dancing Duck and Tatton were the microbreweries on offer when I called. Extremely friendly bar staff and a good atmosphere. For those driving there are parking meters in Adventure Place. |
74 /100 Reginald Mitchell (JDW) (Bar) THE TONTINE, 20 PARLIAMENT ROW Located in the major commercial center of the unusual urban area that is Stoke-on-Trent, this is Hanley’s part of the chain and by far the biggest of all the pubs located within the city limits. It shares the same historic stone market building as Waterstones and has a stunning skylight roof as its centrepiece feature. It is clearly a well lit place during the daytime and its single room setting is over two floors withe the upper section a complete 360 degree balcony that is just a busy a place to sit as below is. There is a bar on both levels and the cosiest area is a small platform level cove area in the upper part. Ales are served on both floors. |
88 /100 Coachmakers Arms (Bar) 65 LICHFIELD STREET Probably the best pub in the city, a tiny pub located in the city centre. Usually has five guest ales on at any time aswell as the resident ale which is Bass. Usually have one stout/porter, one mild, one blonde and one bitter on at a time, though this does sometimes change. Old Rosie is also served. Staropramen is also available on draught, aswell as Carling, Magners and Worthington Creamflow. Amongst the friendliest atmospheres you’ll find, a very cosy pub with large open fires and very friendly and talkative staff. Great pub that any ale fan needs to visit. |
