68 /100 Pleased to Meet You (Bar) 41-45 HIGH BRIDGE With blurred lines between being a pub or a bar in design, its decent row of cask ales including local microbrewed options in its long bar against the left wall is enticing enough. Food is served and its large glass windows at its front allow for people watching whilst you sup. |
64 /100 Lady Grey’s (Bar) 20 SHAKESPEARE STREET Busy town centre pub around a central service area, traditional in design but with a modernised appearance in this respect. Has a fair few drinking options with decent keg ales to be found here as well as cask. Standing room only when I visited early on a Friday evening. |
54 /100 Mile Castle (JDW) (Bar) WESTGATE RD Corner place, ground floor with more seating upstairs. 10 cask ales on display. Handy for breakfast before catching a train at the nearby train station in Newcastle. Not the best spoons as it was a bit shabby with unclear tables when we visited the place about 10:00 in the morning. Polite service, though. (Visited with Finn, 21.03.2024). |
64 /100 Redhouse (Bar) 32 SANDHILL Corner pub in wood and brick, close to the riverside. Divided into many, smaller rooms with the serving bar close to the entrance. Five cask ales and some ciders. Popular and quite crowed early on a Tuesday eve. Polite service. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024). |
72 /100 BrewDog Newcastle (Bar) 16 DEAN STREET Central located BrewDog bar at the lower part of Dean Street. 28 taps on at out stay, including about eight guest beers. Nice port pizza. Friendly service. Clean toilet conditions. Always a pleasure visiting BrewDog bars. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024). |
72 /100 Wobbly Duck (Bar) 4 OLD ELDON SQUARE A cool, charming, rather small basement bar displaying five cask ales and ten craft beers on tap. Mostly regional beers from Durham, Almasty, Rigg & Furrow, and Vaux among others. Excellent service by an Irish man behind the bar. Rock music in the background with AC/DC. Has got a tiny beer garden in the backyard. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024). |
66 /100 Pleased to Meet You (Bar) 41-45 HIGH BRIDGE A large place with a separate restaurant and drinking room. Located in the same city central area as Bacchus and Lady Grey's. It's a well kept pub with five cask ales, quite a few craft beers among the kegs and a large gin menu. Among others, we had a beer from a new local brewery called North State Beer Co. Friendly and informative service. Btw, excellent name for a pub! (Visited with Finn on a pub crawl in central Newcastle, 19.03.2024). |
70 /100 Bacchus (Bar) 42 HIGH BRIDGE This city central pub gives a clean and slightly cold and sterile impression. Stylish mahogany furniture, and excellent toilet conditions upstairs. Nine cask ales in fine condition added by quite a few craft beers on keg. Music from REM during our stay. Polite service. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024). |
84 /100 Lady Grey’s (Bar) 20 SHAKESPEARE STREET Just a great classic pub in the city center. Eight well-kept cask ales with good rotation, a few new ones came on during our stay. Flight options. Lady Grey's is well kept and beautiful with a half moon bar serving different part of a comfortable pub room in brick and dark brownish wood interiors. Even a great music parade with Oasis, Pink Floyd, Iggy Pop, Them and a few more. Welcome and attentive service, in a relaxing atmosphere. Maybe our best pub during three days in Newcastle upon Tyne. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024). |
60 /100 Five Swans (JDW) (Bar) 14 ST MARYS PLACE A well-kept spoons located on a corner in the norther part of the city center. One-floor pub with different rooms and outdoor seating in front of the entrance. Eight cask ales, among them the festival beer from Theakston, Atlantic Red, which was the only beer we missed from the Spoons festival in March 24, and also the reason for us to visit Five Stars. Polite service. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024). |
56 /100 Quayside (JDW) (Bar) 35-37 THE CLOSE, THE QUAYSIDE Located by the River Tyne close to both the Swing Bridge and Tyne Bridge. Outdoor seating both in the front and to the rear of the main building. A rather large JDW split into smaller sections. Six cask ales on display. £4.99 for a traditional breakfast (a bit cheaper than in London and Manchester). Polite service. A good start to our pub crawl in Newcastle upon Tyne. (Visited with Finn, 19.03.2024). |
74 /100 Tyne Bar (Bar) THE TYNE BAR MALING STREET NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE A cool, cozy, colourful and popular pub with a large outdoor seating overlooking the Ouseburn River. Six cask ales supported by keg beers and cans in the fridge. Tasty Mexican salad. Friendly service. The Tyne Bar is situated close to other good beer and brewery pubs, and just the right base for pub crawls. (Visited with Finn, 18.03.2024). |
72 /100 7 AKENSIDE HILL Decent pub located under the Tyne Bridge. Well selected cask ale menu, but it seems that their own microbrewery has closed down. The Tavernale house beer is now brewed by Wylam. The brewery plat can still be seen to the rear of the room, but supposedly not in use anymore. Good vibe even on a Monday afternoon. Friendly and informative service. Food options. (Visited with Finn, 18.03.2024). |
74 /100 Bridge Hotel (Bar) CASTLE GARTH A great, monumental pub with a history going back to the Edwardian era. Cozy, divided into many smaller and larger sections. A long bar to the left side of the entrance, serving 10 cask ales and some craft beers on keg, many from Tyne & Wear breweries. Quite central location, close to the old Newcastle castle and The High Level Bridge. Polite service. Music from Suede, Jam, Pulp, Jimi Hendrix Experience and even a few tunes from Beatles and Clash during our stay. (Visited with Finn, 18.03.2024). |
60 /100 Wobbly Aleways (Beer Store) PLATFORM 12, CENTRAL STATION, NEVILLE STREET A bottle shop inside the railway station, close to platform 12, in Newcastle. Opened in January 2024. So far a bottle shop, but they hope to have a micropub sooner or later. A four-side room well stocked with regional craft beers on cans and bottles. A little patio just outside at the station for drink-in options. Friendly service. The place has its own pub, Wobbly Duck, in the central part of the city. (Visited with Finn, 18.03.2024). |
58 /100 Forth Hotel (Bar) PINK LANE Corner pub just off the main road that runs in front of the station. Traditional styled but chain appearance design with an 'L' shaped bar and drinking room to match. Cask and keg served with a few good options to source, although not extensive. Needless to say this is a good last option venue for a subsequent train journey. |
60 /100 Mile Castle (JDW) (Bar) WESTGATE RD Normal shabby ´spoons. |
70 /100 Redhouse (Bar) 32 SANDHILL Interesting pub with a lot of small rooms. Labyrintish. Ok selection. |
72 /100 BrewDog Newcastle (Bar) 16 DEAN STREET One of the smaller BD. Normal selection. |
72 /100 Wobbly Duck (Bar) 4 OLD ELDON SQUARE Tiny baserment pub/bar. Hard to find. Look in the basement! 5 casks. 10 kegs. Worth a visit. |
68 /100 Pleased to Meet You (Bar) 41-45 HIGH BRIDGE Modern place with 5 casks and lots of kegs. |
70 /100 Bacchus (Bar) 42 HIGH BRIDGE Good-looking semi-modern pub. Ok in many ways - including selection - but a little sterile. Very well kept. Stylish. |
82 /100 Lady Grey’s (Bar) 20 SHAKESPEARE STREET Top cask pub in the town centre. Old-mans-pub on a Tuesday morning. |
68 /100 Quayside (JDW) (Bar) 35-37 THE CLOSE, THE QUAYSIDE Unnormal ´spoons close to the river. Cozy interior. A bit limited selection. |
74 /100 Tyne Bar (Bar) THE TYNE BAR MALING STREET NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE Nice riverside pub with ok selection. |
72 /100 7 AKENSIDE HILL Cozy brewpub under a bridge. Ok selection. |
74 /100 Bridge Hotel (Bar) CASTLE GARTH Good-looking old fashioned pub with a good cask selection. |
44 /100 Duke of Wellington (Bar) 18 HIGH BRIDGE Central, traditional urban pub looking a bit worn but seemingly getting the punters in. There's not much happening in here, there might be a local cask of interest on one of several pumps on it's central bar. |
64 /100 Bacchus (Bar) 42 HIGH BRIDGE Sort of back street style entrance, the small road it is on rises up from Grey Street. There's a whiff of Wetherspoon imitation here, it looks like an old building old business conversion, with lots of dark wood and split-level seat around a central service area. Perhaps too good of one! Televisions and some sports shown. However there's plenty of worthwhile craft keg and microbrewed cask options here to keep you busy. |
68 /100 Redhouse (Bar) 32 SANDHILL Riverside level pub almost under the Tyne Bridge, with views. Cavernous multi-roomed pub with several bars - they have different beers on then too so don't do what I did and order from the first and smallest! Furniture is traditional with some tables put out front. Its microbrewed cask is a better option than its crafted keg. |
68 /100 Bridge Hotel (Bar) CASTLE GARTH Traditional pub immediately on the Newcastle side of the High Level Bridge. In its own building with views across the river and outdoor seating, it is heavy in dark wood features, carpeted and although is too modern to be Victorian there's a nod to that era in here. A long row of cask ales are all very worthwhile with plenty of local options. |
68 /100 Fenwicks (Grocery Store) NORTHUMBERLAND STREET Pedestrian shopping street department store with food hall on its ground floor. Here's there's a healthy mix of craft can and bottles, mostly from the local areas, but further afield found here too. There's plenty of choice. |
76 /100 7 AKENSIDE HILL Older purposes built public house between stanchions holding up the Tyne Bridge. It's now modernised with a very attractive industrious traditional mix including exposed brickwork, bookshelves, and brewing equipment against the back wall. 10 cask pumps and not quite as many craft keg are all along the bar along the side wall. |
72 /100 Head Of Steam Quayside (Bar) 11-17 BROAD CHARE Almost on the quayside opposite the Gateshead Convention Centre on the north side of the river. Some exposed brickwork gives this a cavernous feel. Its smallish for the chain 'L' shaped bar doesn't quite pack in as many choices as other city centre outlets but there's ample craft keg and cask to choose from. Food served. |
72 /100 Bodega (Bar) 125 WESTGATE ROAD Large single room pub, with bench seating along the walls. Spacious standing room between the tables. Good choice of cask beers, music in the background but not at an intrusive noise level. |
74 /100 Mean Eyed Cat (Bar) 1 ST. THOMAS STREET, Visited June 2023. Large micro-pub type space. Plenty of choice on cask & keg. Some outside space out the back. |
82 /100 7 AKENSIDE HILL Visited June 2023. Cracking pub. Decent selection of beers. Nice atmosphere, friendly service |
74 /100 PALACE OF ARTS EXHIBITION PARK, CLAREMONT ROAD Visited June 2023 for a Sunday roast. It's an amazing building in a big park setting. The food was great and there was a fair selection of the brewery's beers available. But it's a long way from a traditional brewery taproom. It was full of 'well to do' Jesmond types drinking wine with their roast dinner. Glad I've been but I wouldn't rush back. I've heard latterly that it's more of a wedding venue nowadays |
74 /100 Tyne Bar (Bar) THE TYNE BAR MALING STREET NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE Under the bridge just below the Free Trade Inn is this decent lively pub with a decent sized outside area down by the river. Decent range of cask stuff in good condition featuring craft and local ales. Included Ursa Major, Almasty... this place is busy and lively so service can be a bit brusque. |
80 /100 Mean Eyed Cat (Bar) 1 ST. THOMAS STREET, Another of the newer min-pubs and another cracker. Small space but nice line up of cask beers, about 5 when I went in and all seemed to be in really good condition. Included Turning Point and Burning Sky when I was in there plus some local ales. Also good range of craft stuff on keg and decent bottle and can selection. The highlight though is cask in good condition. Can get a bit tight and steamy in here if there's too many people though. Has a bit of a indie punk vibe going on with the music and decor. |
88 /100 Town Mouse Ale House (Bar) 11 ST MARY’S PLACE Not sure why this doesn't have a better rating. One of the newer mini-pubs, hidden in a basement at the top end of the shopping high street. Small inside but owner is friendly and takes pride in his beers. Usually about 6 cask beers on and then a range of craft stuff on keg and in cans. Cask beer was in excellent condition, which is such a hard thing to find these days. Had Deya, Brass Castle, Iron Pier on cask. |
72 /100 Wobbly Duck (Bar) 4 OLD ELDON SQUARE Visited 27/9/2022 with Darlington danlo. Newcastle’s newest micropub. Reminiscent of the setup at the nearby Mouse but with a much darker wood themed bar and decor. Decent enough selection of cask and keg, local plus a few surprises from much further afield. Some bottles behind the bar. Definitely one to add on to the visit list if in that area, and being so close to the Mouse and also the Cat it makes a nice trio. |
86 /100 PALACE OF ARTS EXHIBITION PARK, CLAREMONT ROAD Out on the town moors where the original Newcastle exhibition took place in the only building remaining from that event. Iconic building in what is essentially a park beside a water feature. Great summer location with a large outdoor tabled space… pop up provides food. Indoor is a modern tap room with 2 cask offerings and another 10 or so keg beers plus lots of cans, wines and decent array of spirits. Unique location and a must visit in the Toon… probably less so in Winter |
70 /100 Crown Posada (Bar) 31 SIDE Classic pub, now reopened after being shut for a long time due to COVID. A decent range of ales were on offer during my recent visit, no issues with quality. Very expensive, my pint cost over a fiver which makes this place a bit of a tourist trap. |
66 /100 38 NEVILLE STREET Nicholson's pub that is more than adequate, never found an issue with this chain. I had a tasty pint of plum porter, handy for the train station as others have noted. |
70 /100 Newcastle Arms (Bar) 57 ST ANDREW’S ST. Indifferent establishment that you find in any city centre these days. Four ales available, my pint of orange stout was fine. Nothing particularly wrong with this pub, not one for an all nighter though. Has a happy hour during the week. |
68 /100 PALACE OF ARTS EXHIBITION PARK, CLAREMONT ROAD Impressive venue, but a disappointing visit on the Sunday after CBC'21. No cask and of the 9 kegs on, three were over 10%. All were good, just not an encouraging showcase of what I have previously found to be an excellent brewery. Food wasn't available.
Would have stayed longer, but they called time an hour an a half before the advertised closing time of 10pm (despite the hours listed above, they are open on a Sunday, but be warned!)
Unlit walk through the park (via Great North Road foot tunnel) not for the faint-hearted, but we didn't see a soul. |
44 /100 Centurion (Bar) GRAND CENTRAL STATION, NEVILLE STREET Small selection available (so small we didn't end up staying). Good whilst waiting for a train I guess. |
58 /100 2 NEVILLE STREET, Quite small, but a decent selection of beers - a board at the entrance displays the beer list via untappd (though untappd itself does not show the beer list...). Thirds available. |
