“A rebrand by Ossett Brewery of their previously named Candlebar, now carrying their SALT venture brews as oppose to the more historic Ossett ales. Not much else has changed here at this attractive canal basin location below the train station.“

“Situated slightly out of town and a short walk from the train station. Fairly spacious with additional tables upstairs. Cask and keg offered. Mainly local beers but some national and international craft beers served too. Decent food of a limited menu.“

“Stopped by at several different times and this place was always quiet, mellow and uncrowded. Multiple rooms inside with a central bar, picnic tables in the courtyard. Food looked tasty but I didn't eat. Range is mostly from Leeds Brewery but there are some guest taps as well.“

“Visited one day before their first Zwanze Day, the calm before the storm so-to-speak. Downstairs looks small, two rooms surrounding a central bar, but there's a large space out back with umbrella tables, and overflow rooms upstairs. Four cask beers, four or so interesting craft beers on draft, and the rest were macros. Food was tasty and creative. Starters and mains came at the same time, which was a bit challenging. Slightly pricey, but not any more than other Leeds places. Staff knew the beers. Looking forward to tomorrow.“

“Started my crawl of Leeds on 8th July 2022 at this chilled spacious taproom. As well as a patio garden, it is airy and well-lit indoors with windows on opposite sides. Seating and tables allowed an un-crowded feel for the solo visitor despite it being a fairly busy Friday evening at 5.30. Enthusiastic staff behind the bar. I had two flawless pale variants, both perfectly poured. Lovers of Northern Monk ales, will find a satisfying choice on keg, but keep in mind there are only two or so cask taps. Loved it.“

“Big, open and airy bar on the comely Granary Wharf. With a falafel/shawarma kitchen attached. You know what you're getting with SALT: Solid dependable craft that may not push the boat out stylewise but will do what it says on the tin. This bar seems fixated on SALT core range with a small fridge full of (expensive) cans. Some are repeats of what they have on keg/cask but there are some harder to find gems here if you look. Maybe not the place to spend the entirety of your evening but certainly worth stopping for a beer or two.“

“Cosy and friendly traditional pub. I say traditional bit among the couple of cask there's quite a bit of keg, some macro but also some decent breweries such as Roosters and Bone Machine. It's certainly worth popping in, although you might already be in the area for the likes of SALT and Northern Monk Refrectory it's nice to try a more old-fashined venue along the way.“

“Maybe not quite hitting the highs of the Manchester venue, the Leeds Refrectory has loads to offer the casual and dedicated NM fan. 16 taps with mostly Northern Monk but some guests dotted along. You can get some hard-to-find beers here from their OFS range as well as their standard core range such as Faith and Northern Star. Not cheap, although the old adage that you get what you pay for applies here. Worth checking out and returning to whenever you're in Leeds.“

“A lovely trad pub in Holbeck. Multi-roomed, incredibly friendly and very comfortable. Not the biggest selection -four cask ales plus Neck Oil - but it's a wonderful place to camp out for a while. On my visit they had session beers from Daleside, Ilkley and Roosters, all good local breweries. Very much a place to check out even though you won't get bags of ticks.“

“Visited for the British Bourbon Society 3rd Birthday. Tall 3 or 4 story converted industrial building slightly in the middle of nowhere, which looks modern and cool. Interiors are craft beer chic - long tables, red brick and exposed walls. Tap list is fantastic and beer staff are well trained and friendly. Food was also very good when I was in - Masaman Beef curry. Fridges of beers available for take out too. Highly recommended and one of the most impressive tap rooms of the newer craft beer additions.“

“Brewery tap in a beautiful old mill building a 10 to 12 minute walk south of Leeds railway station. This was NM’s brewery site also 7ntil they moved to a larger site nearby, downstairs is now used as the small batch brewery. The brewery tap is on the first floor. A good variety of the brewery’s own beers available, plus guests. Great beer in a stunning venue, what not to like? Go visit!“

“Visiting this pub offers a bit of time travelling, as it's got this old fashioned classic UK pub design with several small rooms surrounding the bar. The bigger room is converted into a music club, and I've had many happy nights here in the company of local singer/songwriters and noisy blues bands. Excellent selection of 8-10 real ales, mostly northern ones.“

“Located a 10 min walk from the trainstation, this used to be a mill black in the days, Industrial design at the Refectory at 2. Level as well, stone floors, green steel beams and supporting columns. 16 taps, most their own, but also some guest beers. Fridge in the corner where you can buy some of their own beer for takeaway. “Visited on 8th July 2017. Smart looking Leeds Brewery pub on the industrial Holbeck side of town. It’s set up for food as much as drinking, the decor is smart and modern, there’s plenty of room to relax in and also a patio. Beer range is OK. Picked up a new Leeds beer here but not too much of interest. Prices and service OK. Would look in but not a must stop venue especially with Tap in other side of station.“

“Visited on 8th July 2017. Nice little bar just up the road from the Northern Monk place, decor is decent enough, it was nice and cool in here on a hot day, there’s a couple of rooms to sit in and a garden out back. Beer range was a decent mix of cask and keg, had a French keg beer here whic h don’t see around much. Service was good and barman was chatty, prices decent value. Worth a stop for a potential scoop.“

“Visited on 8th July 2017. Situated on the South side of the station (there is an exit off he overbridge) is this impressive place. It’s a stand alone building, brewery is downstairs and upstairs a large, single roomed bar. The decor is modern and smart, the food smelled really good. Beer range is a great mix of their own beer on cask and keg plus a few guests. There also appears to be special Refectory Beers available too as I picked up Archie. On the right of the bar is a large fridge with a small selection on Northern Monk plus some Alechemist beers from the US. Service was super friendly, prices were good, really liked this place and would definitely revisit.“

“Visited several times during a weekend in August -16, and loved this place to bits. A must visit if you want to experience the Yorkshire craft beer revolution. Large outside seating area, inside seating also spacious, and you’ll get a glimpse of the brewery on your way in. Nice detail with the sign telling you which beers are currently brewing in the tanks. They brew some excellent beers, some traditional, some more experimental ones - so a tasting setup with 1/3 pints is a good way to start. Usually have 8-10 on their own on tap + 4-5 guest beers. Simple meals served. Can be very loud at busy times, but equally quiet on the Sunday afternoon. A small walking distance from the city centre, but if you go there by Water Lane, there are a few excellent pubs on your way there.“

“First stop in Leeds, fresh off the train. Unfortunately I arrived at their opening time of 11 AM, only to be told that their license allows them to serve beer starting at 12. Good information to put on your website. Staff felt sorry for me and brought me a coffee, then helped me plan the rest of my day in Leeds. Nice beer list with some guests. Worth a stop at noon or later. Can peek into the brewery from downstairs.“

“Good array of beers and enjoyed the food. However when a pub is this popular it can be a right hassle. Especially when people start jumping the queue/scrum for the bar. Would be a good pub but loses points for being so crowded.“

“Had to go to Leed for work in May 2015 and took the advantage to meet up with a friend who took me to various pubs. This was the pick of the bunch. OK - done up in a cliched industrial hipster style, but was buzzing and staff very helpfulon their beers. Would have bought some bottles to take away if it wasn’t so early in the morning. Interesting area to - seemed deserted until went in.“

“We visited The Grove on Friday 13th November 2015. We’d walked past this place before en route to Northern Monk Refectory but never gone in. It was a really blustery day with some showers but fierce winds whipping about particularly nearby here in the shadow of some very tall modern buildings which seem to affect the air flow more. This pub is a survivor an old well worn much loved traditional pub surrounded by modern faceless glass, metal and new brickwork office structures but it stands defiant halting the course of progress in this one little area at least. It is white fronted, multi roomed cosy and with a bar that seemed to be accessed predominantly from the corridor that ran through the centre that connected all. I didn’t have a good look around but it seemed as though the floors were possibly terrazzo in places, it was a really nice place with many original features. Beer choice was a little safe but with Acorn and Roosters on as I recall there were at least a couple of good beers. I liked it here and would recommend that if you are on a stroll around here or heading towards Northern Monk Refectory via this route then you should pop in.“

“2015-09-26. Love the decor, it’s well worn but classic. Sitting room off to the side when you come in feels like it is someone’s house. Multi-roomed traditional pub is probably lovely when not it is not this rammed, but in fairness all these people are here for the same reason as us - it’s one of the first good pubs walking back into town from the Rugby World Cup match at Elland road. It took us a good while to get served despite the best efforts of the staff. We huddle in a corner for a quick drink and decided not to stick around. There was a nice small patio that I didn’t see until we left. We probably would have stayed longer if we had seen it. Tap list has a decent range of casks and taps but today the beers are just okay for the most part. “

“In the industrialised Holbeck area of Leeds to the south west of the station, this area is slowly being gentrified and is a good 15 minutes walk away from the main city centre action. In its own converted brick warehouse building, the brewing takes place downstairs, with the funky open plan bar area on one of the the upper levels. Here you’ll find plenty of the brewers core range either on cask or keg, but many guest ales too. There’s also many bottles available too if you prefer this option. It’s mainly bench type seating on both high and lower level tables with the old buildings features providing plenty of ambiance for the room.“

“A free enterprise, street corner pub less than ten minutes’ walk from the railway station and down the Neville Street. Promotes a genuine, hardcore, classic Brit pub feel and welcome atmosphere. Divided into four rooms with a small main bar serving well-kept cask ale. Nine hand pumps, a few bottles and the usual fizzy stuff on tap. Most of the cask ales come from regional breweries. The barman was friendly and talkative and so were the guests. Just a cozy and likable place (visited with Steinar 07.07.2015).“

“A Leeds Brewery outlet in Holbeck, the former industrial area at the edge of town, not far from Refectory. Six Leeds and one guest on the cask pumps supported by a few taps and bottles. Two floors in a modern-traditional décor, open and airy. Exceptionally loud music. Friendly and smiling girls behind the bar. A rather large and inviting patio in the backyard, which should be very nice in sunny weather. Quite alright for a quick half or two (visited with Steinar, 07.07.2015).“

“Maybe the best place for beer drinking in Leeds at the moment. A brewbar in an old storehouse located in the former industrial Holbeck Urban Village on the “other side” of the railway station. About 10 to 15 minutes’ walk from the station. The brewery plant can be found at the ground floor and a medium sized, four sided bar room upstairs. Nine of their own beers on tap and cask, in addition to a few collabs, a few guest ales and a small section of well selected bottled beers. Cask and tap beers can be bought in thirds (beer flight). For eating there are some delicious sandwiches on the food menu. Rock, funk, soul and Brit pop in the background. Friendly and knowledgeable service in a quite cozy post-industrial atmosphere. Cool t-shirts. I think we spend more than three hours here having a great time, happy about finally reaching the True North (visited together with Steinar 07.07.2015).“

“Old fashioned in every way, this pub. The interior, the loud men gazzling away their 3% tasteless ales and the overly chatty yet not necessarily friendly staff. The place smells like baking grease inside and even on the terrace. Beers are considered strong and dark here if it’s 4% and ruby. With such nice offerings nearby, including the Refactor brewpub, I would not stop here again. Only the prices are okay-ish.“

“Tap room literally above the brewery. Totally in American hipster style, including the decoration and food menu. But I don’t mind, because their own tasty brews are available as tasters and are very attractively prices, the food is tasty and modern and the people seem very patient and friendly. Not sure how busy this gets, but it was nice and quite around Friday lunch time, with a pleasing crowd. They could use some improvements in their own beers (which are good but not very special) but the tap room is a success I think. Great value. Stayed much longer than planned!“

“We visited The Midnight Bell on Saturday 21st February 2015. Fortunately this pub visit sat somewhere in the middle of our little Leeds pub stroll, I mention this because it would have been disappointing after going to such great places to have finished here. The Midnight Bell is a short walk from the Refectory and about 8-10 mins from the centre of town. Beer choice was predominantly Leeds Brewery and to be fair they are always half decent so I should have gone for one of them rather than the guest beer I plumped for which almost hit the dizzy heights of mediocre. I took an instant dislike to this place on entering as large lilliies on each of the tables gave off a bloody awful odour. It is a tidy place, ok it has ideas above it’s station in my opinion and it’s trying and I guess succeeding to primarily attract punters for food. The decor is very ’just so’ and it seems a rather sterile place lacking a buzz and utterly devoid of atmosphere. Stop it Fin you are just picking fault for the sake of it, ok let’s look at some of the positives, staff are friendly. food looked fine, it’s a smart place, close to the Refectory. However it wasn’t for us.“

“We visited the Northern Monk Tap on Saturday 21st February 2015, the chap at Tall Boys Bottle shop told us about this place as well as giving us details of how to get here. The tap is located in the Holbeck area of Leeds, only about 10 mins walk from the centre of town on the opposite side of the river, it is a short walk along from The Midnight Bell and Cross Keys pub or you could even access it via The Grove Inn route which we did, we then walked back the other way via the aforementioned pubs. The tap itself is a little isolated, but it is in a wonderful old former industrial building, I am unsure what it’s previous use was, but it looks great. It is on the first floor, there is one of those fab’ old fashioned shutter cage lifts that you used to see used to good effect in abandoned New York buildings in Starsky and Hutch. As opposed to leading out to a room offering stunning views of the Manhattan skyline, this lift sits opposite the main door to the bar. I am unsure if this lift is in working order (it doesn’t look like it works) so not sure what the arrangements are for those with mobility issues. The bar is a large oblong room which is well lit with windows either side. There are plenty of heavy duty, sturdy long tables and chairs, and also high tables with stools in here. The rear walls are adorned with artwork, a bookcase for your perusal sits in a corner. The bar and tap dispense areas are modern, industrial, heavy duty and simplistic in design, lots of metalwork. There was a very good range of taps approx’ sixteen with Brewdog Tokyo and a big hitter from Evil Twin on offer along with most of the Northern Monk core range as well as some specials, to the right of the bar is a small area of racking with bottles, and also some merchandise to purchase. When we arrived we were just about the only people in here, however when we left there wasn’t a spare seat left. It was also nice to see a good age range in here and families and a dog. Prices seemed very reasonable particularly for their own beers, less so for the Brewdog Tokyo, though at the strength that beer is, I guess it is to be expected that it will lighten your wallet a little. The staff were young, chatty, clearly very knowledgeable and friendly. I really liked it here, I think it will do very well, indeed if today’s showing is anything to go by it is already popular, I can well imagine that this area might also start to see a few more places start to pop-up.“
