“Modern designed traditional freestanding pub right by the river, with split-level seating overlooking the water. There's four real ales at this chain style food pub, usually local, but arguably it's it outdoor setting which is the main pull to this otherwise locals place.“

“In the upper part of Mirfield on the main road heading north on its eastern side. It's set back from the road in its own grounds and is not a club, anyone can go there. I got the history of this place off the landlord and this building is a newer sympathetically built and designed building to the former venue that was towards the rear of this place. It does look like a club inside with colonial artefacts making it look very warm inside, especially with its carpets too, and there's not a lot of natural light either. It's named after a fine immigrant cricketer from somewhere in the Empire who played for money so was not allowed to play for the counties in an era of amateurs, but found a way to make a living. Once a Good Beer Guide regular he has lost 80% of his trade since Covid as the older folk just haven't returned, so just one cask available, which was a new special from Stancil on my visit.“

“South of the railway station just after the bridge that crossing the River Calder, this pub in its own building is run by Ossett Brewery and there’s plenty of their ales available at its central bar, however guests feature here too. The pub itself is traditional in style, bur quite airy and roomy with a decent finish to its furniture. Food is served here and there’s a patio area by the river at its rear.“

Railway (Bar)
212 HUDDERSFIELD ROAD
“On the main road just as the traffic slows down to get through the small town centre of Mirfield, this pub is very traditional in look from the outside, it adheres to the same look inside although it’s clear the fixtures and fittings have been updated recently. The main drinking area is around the bar towards the back of the pub after the front room which is set-up with dining tables. Despite its name it is not the closest pub to the railway station but like the one that is it does serve real ales and there Black Sheep and Tim Taylor have a permanent presence here along with a guest ale when demand takes.“

“Right next to the railway station on its north side, its no longer an ageing traditional pub, Magic Rock have taken over and given it a modernisation, although sympathetic to its previous incarnations. Only two keg brews were available from the brewer and cask still dominates the bar serving both sides of a split room venue, and these are all guests including some of the regular Theakston ales that once dominated the bar. The beer garden overlooks the canal.“

“Awful cask selection, completely full of S&N and Theakstons. Not worth being on Ratebeer at all.“

“Providing an excellent riverside beer garden, with moorings for up to 4 boats, and situated on the main road a mile from Mirfield centre and the railway station. This relaxed and cosy atmospheric pub, combined with its home-cooked food served lunchtimes and evenings has become the place to be by locals and visitors alike, features rotating guest ales and traditional hand-pulled cider, this Punch Tavern house has become very popular in recent months since being taken on by the new landlord Alan.“

“Popular canalside free house serving up to five rotating guest and Caledonian ales plus regulars and is a registered ambassador for Theakston beers at competitive prices. Close to Mirfield railway station, it features on the Transpennine Rail Ale Trail. It has Saturday night entertainment, regular beer festivals, active sports and pool teams, a large function room and en-suite B & B. At least two real cider/perry choices are offered. Open for tea and coffee from 7.30am Monday to Saturday.“

“Formerly a private members’ club and run by the same enthusiastic real ale supporter for the last 10 years. Six hand pumps dispense real ale from Thwaites, JW Lees and a wide range of breweries from all over the UK. Their excellent value Sunday lunch is popular. There is a Royal British Legion memorial in the garden and local charities are well supported. The spacious conservatory is popular for meetings and functions. Evening meals are available Thursday 6-8pm, Friday 5.30-8pm, and Saturday 5.30-7.30pm. Winner of the CAMRA Pub of the Season on many occasions and runner up in the Regional Club of the Year, this well respected establishment can be found in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide.“
