“Friends of us went to eat here and we joined them afterwards on the terrace for drinks. Solid sized place, nice terrace, quite some choice of beer from local breweries Kaiser Bräu, Simon, Krug,… Not exactly sure what I had anymore but it was definitely in solid condition.“

“3rd place we visited on our trip where the restaurant / eating part turned out to be exceptionally closed. Luckily their Festbier was on tap served in a Stein! I wasn’t hugely impressed with the Festbier, we got some pretzels which were incredibly stale bread covered in an unbelievable amount of table salt, interesting.“

“Zutiefst urige, bodenständige Kneipe. Rauher aber herzlicher Ton in der Schwemme. Etwas ruhiger wird es in der Gaststube, deren Einrichtung sich seit den 1930er Jahren nur wenig geändert hat. Einfachste Speisen zu 2 Hebendanz-Bieren vom Faß. Unbedingt sehenswert! (Besucht 22.8.2023.)“

“What a friendly place. Mona, the server pretended she was grumpy, but really wasn't. Also got chatting to the owners. All the other clientele were nice too. 2 beers on draft and 5/6 in bottles. A must visit in Forchheim.“

“Just one beer on draft, straight from the barrel. I was the only female in there at 2pm.But it didn't really matter. 5 or 6 bottled beers also. Barman was friendly. Cash only.“

“We turned up at 7.45 on Friday evening. Only one table occupied, all others reserved. Surely there can't be more people turning out at that time of night.“

“Located at the north of the town just over the ring road and behind the brewery. 1 beer on draft, straight from the barrel and at least 5 bottled beers. Our server soke little English, but with my German we got by. She was really friendly. Worth the walk.“

“Visited here Friday 9th June 2023 on a weekend where I was on my own as Loz was in Volos, Greece for a week. Like Neder and Hernandez it is easy to find, but unlike the other, when you get to the end of the main pedestrianised street don't turn off to the left, instead continue on and eventually after about 200-300m you will find it on your left. Btw it is a wonderful looking building from the outside. I sat inside and had a beer and a Schnitzel, sadly I was informed earlier in the evening that this brewery had now been taken overby Hertl though also informed that they (brewers?) were planning on setting up in Würzburg, not sure whether this is true or not. Beer was good regardless of current brewer and Schnitzel was ok. Didin't have the same vibe as the other two places and if in town again would probably give it a miss.“

“Visited here Friday 9th and Saturday 10th June 2023 on a weekend where I was on my own as Loz was in Volos, Greece for a week. To repeat some of my other rating for Neder, this is also super easy to find, at the end of the main pedestrianised street and off to the side, it is separated by its brewery neighbour by one building. Less tables here outside than Neder but just as friendly and down to earth a really nice vibe. The barman on the second visit was great, I had a Hefe Weisse which was excellent, I got chattting to a guy from Somalia who had been here for over twenty years. You really could just spend the evning between this place and Neder and have a fab night. I went inside to get served and can imagine it would be great in the winter months. Another down to earth very friendly place.“

“Visited here Friday 9th June 2023 on a weekend where I was on my own as Loz was in Volos, Greece for a week. It is easy to find, at the end of the main pedestrianised street and off to the side, it is separated by its brewery neighbour by one building. I liked it here and returned later the same night. I had a couple of beers, the weather was maginificent, and I was sat outside, sharing a table with a local. The beer was also very reasonably priced and service swift. There were a few characters who was serving, including one woman who later on literally seemed to bark at everyone and whilst I know my German isn't great I still was unable to make out a single word of what she said. A large bunch of bikers (motorbikers) turned up and took one of the lareg tables out front and the barman impressively brought ten beers out, just carried out without a tray. Great bar, very down to earth.“

“We had a short first stop at the Brauhaus Neder on our beer tour 2022. We had a excellent Neder Export from barrel. Crisp and easy too drink. The place was crowded but we had called and made reservations. We had time for just 2 beers, I would have loved to stay longer for another.“

“Great location under the trees. We visited 3 of the Kellers—about half in total were open following the easing of Corona restrictions in the Landkreis. Had mostly bad luck picking up new ratings and it’s hard to sample given the size of the pours. This is though a pleasant way to pass an evening, although I’ve not much interest to be here with 400k others during the Annafest. Limited eats at most places but the Schindlerkeller, where we ate, offered some very decent dishes of traditional Franconian fare.“

“Fantastic location with all the kellers up the hill. Unfortunately no places were open when visiting, despite at least one announced so. Well it opened after half an hour but with no food and limited selection. Have to revisit.“

“Hard to rate. A lovely forest, so absolutely beautiful in good weather. On most days, there are only a couple kellers open, like when we went. in that case, you have a half dozen or so beers to choose from, which isn't a whole lot. During festivals and at other certain times, it is better, or so I hear. Go if you are in the area.“

“For me the Kellerwald is in walking distance. So you can be sure I know it well. It is situated in an oak tree forest on the hill east of town. You can walk up in 20-25 minutes from Forchheim city center or the train station with now excellent local train connections to the Nuremberg-Bamberg line. A taxi costs about 7-8 Euros currently. New hotels right next to the train station are under construction and will offer new options.. The Kellerwald knows 3 seasons: winter with limited seating in mostly cabin style huts quite cozy summer (May to October) with many outdoor seatings and Annafest with full capacity of 30,000 seats, an 11 day event end of July with special brews and mostly only 1 Litre steins. Respectively there are all year kellers (aka cellars as most of them sit on man made caves used for storage),.summer kellers and Annafest kellers. Beer comes for 4 local breweries: Greif, Neder, Hebendanz and Eichhorn (order by size of brewery, Greif the biggest). All are family owned for centuries, way before the term “craft beer” came up. If it is not Annafest you will get a lager style draught beer nowadays poured with CO2 from a flash cooler. Only 2 kellers do traditional storage and pour with gravity. Schaufel Keller and Glockenkeller (partially). Weißbier from the bottle is also available from all of them and some specials like the “Schwarze Anna” from Nederbräu. . There is also beer available from small breweries from neighboring villages. Georgenbräu and Löwenbräu from Buttenheim and Rittmayer, Hallerndorf, In terms of industrial brews there is good news and bad news. Wolfshöher eventually will disappear but Kaiserbräu Neuhaus took over some of their kellers. They bring in their labels Veldensteiner and Simon. Tucher to my knowledge still owns one keller but opens only at Annafest offering their label Zirndorfer.. If you decide to come at Annafest you will find the “largest beer garden in the world”, city officials claim. There are lots of roundabouts and sweets stands for kids but also additional bars and music stages for adults in addition to the beer offerings. Locals prefer the time around Annafest for more atmosphere easier service at your seat and an unbelievable value. In winter, the quiet season, there are additional offerings like goose from the oven. But you need to find a date and bring a party. Drop me a note if you need to know more. “

“Visited with SinH4 and CS. One room place with a serving bar. Cheery outgoing waitress serving a roomful of dour old men who went to extraordinary lengths to avoid eye contact with us, merely turning their empty steins on their side to signal their continued thirst. The single tap beer was very tasty, exceeding our expectations. Worthwhile stop suggested by SinH4.“

“A huge Getränkemarkt with a wide range of beer, some of them terribly local. Some crafty brews are sold as well, and all the beers I bought here were fresh and in good shape. Super cheap, the perfect place to load up the trunk of your car. *The* Getränkemarkt to go to in Franconia.“

“You visit the Annafest to get experience of one of the world’s better piss-ups. You visit Kellerwald and any other time of the summer because it is a clever way of doing Franconian beer in a nutshell and for me was one of the best cultural beer drinking experiences of a long career writing about the subject. On Mayday bank holiday weekend about 20 of the 28 or so bierkellers (local name for biergarten) were open and no two were owned or run by the same brewery. Most serve at least one kellerbier without added gas. The standard measure was 50 cl and the usual vessel was a stoneware krug. We bagged Greif, Löwenbräu Buttenheim, Wolfshöher, Nederbrau and Eichhorn and could have doubled that number with some advanced planning. Food and service varied, as you would expect but generally was pretty good. The place started up around 09.30 and carried on till 20.30. It is a 20-30 minute walk from Forchheim train station, which is 20-25 minutes from Bamberg on the Nuremberg line.“

“The most ignorant barman I have come across in 44 years of drinking. Five tables empty but would not let us sit down, told us to stand outside in freezing hall, which we refused to do. Said he didn’t understand English only Russian, we sat down anyway which he came and told us not to. 30 minutes later one of the empty tables was occupied. This man is a total ...... .....“

“I went here during the Anna fest and whilst the atmosphere was unsurprisingly like a carnival it was very crowded. Was easy to get served at the many kellers but unfortunately the minimum size of most beers on offer is 1 litre so not so good if you are on your own and want to tick a few!“

“The is a place with a very rough feeling on a weekday afternoon. Presumably retired and unemployed men are hanging out putting a buzz on. A woman might be scared to go alone--hell, I was. It is definitely worth a visit, though, to get the feel of the Franken underbelly. The kellerbier in bottle was very good. Sadly the Export from gravity wasn’t.“

“This Getränkemarkt is located on the outside of Forchheim, easy reachable with the Autobahn. The selection is big and offers very local and regional beer, mixed with some local craftbeer (partly overpriced). Found many new ones for myself there, yet I doubt that they change their range of beers a lot. Prices for the normal bottles were cheap and service ok. Would come back for buying the rest of their beers.“

“Over 20 pubs, bier kellers, put together in a large woody area outside of the town called Forchheim. We visited three of them: Glocken keller, Winterbauer keller and Rappen keller. Each keller is an outlet for one brewery, some of them serving up to 7 to 8 different beers. Friendly service all over, and well-made German food at Winterbauer Keller where they also took us for sightseeing into the beer caves. 20 minutes by train from Bamberg to Forchheim and then we walked for about haft an hour from the station. It is of course possible to take a bus to Kellerwald. Lovely autumn weather also made this trip an exciting happening (visited 11.10.2014).“

“Large "Getränkemarkt" , located in an industrial estate south of the Forchheim city centre, close to an ARAL petrol station; great selection of local franconian beers plus the inevitable usual suspects; on a special shelf You can find the ridicoulosly priced special brews from the Pretzfeld Nikl-Bräu… So far the best drinks market in Franconia (with the exception of the Nuremberg Landbierparadies)!!! Worth a detour! “

“A string of uninspiring breweries serving little more than Helles (outside of Annafest), prices higher than elsewhere in Franconia. I don’t understand the appeal and I can’t recommend a visit. You would think that bierkellers would serve Kellerbier, but we found only helles and a single Festbier.“
