72 /100 6/19 - 25 KEMBLA ST, FYSHWICK The location in the industrial park has been closed since COVID but I spoke with the owner and former brewer who says he hopes to reopen by Spring 2023. In the meantime, they have a brew trailer that appears at various parks around the city. Visited it north of Braddon in 2023. They have 3 beers and tap, and a cider. Also several bottles plus some light food that works well for pairing. Very friendly guy. Would visit again, but have to make sure on facebook that they aren't rained out. |
78 /100 The Old Canberra Inn (Bar) 195 MOUAT STREET, LYNEHAM A really nice collection of taps, some local, others from around Australia. The ambiance is awesome. Nineteenth century interior, and large outdoor patio spaces. Looking forward to going back to sample the menu. Visited during 2023. |
74 /100 Plonk (Beer Store) SHOP 36, CNR NYRANG & MILDURA STS, FYSHWICK The best place I've found so far for craft beer can and bottles in Canberra. Singles and discounts on 4 and six packs. Plenty of variety, from Australia and elsewhere. Located in the Fyshwick market. Solid. |
70 /100 Brew Nation (Bar) SYDNEY BUILDING 102 ALINGA ST Surprisingly small selection of beers, but despite the name, seems to be equally about wine. A larger collection of cans. Brews seems to be focused on Australian breweries, which was was appreciated. Very large outside space, largish inside space spread across two rooms. |
64 /100 ERMINAL, 25 TERMINAL AVE A pretty good selection of their own beers, only exceeded by the brewery location. Includes some guest taps, ciders, coffee, and liquor. A nice reason to arrive at the airport early. Visited first during my flight to Hobart in 2023. |
62 /100 131 CITY WALK A decent Irish pub in the center of downtown. Large outside seating and larger interior as well. Food available, but didn't try any. An average selection of taps, with at least a few locals available. Nice serving staff. Visited in 2023 during first week in Canberra. |
80 /100 3/1 DAIRY RD, FYSHWICK Really nice modern brewery. Large interior in industrial park. Plenty of outside seating. Food truck inside. Plenty of their own brews on tap and in cans to go. Visited during first week in Canberra in 2023. |
78 /100 38 MORT ST, BRADDON Huge big bustling spot in a lively part of Canberra, open to the outside. Now I don’t know your mother from Adam in CANBERRA of all places, but the scene seems solid. This city sucks much less than I thought it would. You can tick, albeit maybe not the quality you’d like. Quality of beer is above average but won’t blow your mind. Something like 20 or even more beers on tap. If you’re a Pokémon style “gotta catch em all” ticker like I am, watch out. Hillary Clinton once famously said, “Pokémon Go to the polls!” This place, if you do tick em all, is like “Pokémon Go to the bowls!” The TOILET bowls because it’s coming back up! Food is quite solid, figuratively and also literally unless you eat soup. Prices are reasonable. |
60 /100 Casey Jones (Bar) 15 KINGSLAND PARADE, CASEY Casey Jones is a modern suburban pub attached to the local shopping centre. They serve an American themed menu of burgers, pizza, steaks etc. in a nicely laid out venue with about 15 or so taps. Most taps were corporate brewers and their associated 'craft brands' but a handful of independents in the mix as well. Not bad for an outer suburban neighbourhood bar but not worth making too much effort to get here. |
60 /100 Braddon Brew (Bar) 27 LONSDALE STREET, BRADDON This is a tiny bar at the end of an alley with a small cluster of assorted shops. They have about 12 seats inside and more than that outside in the adjoining shared courtyard. It seems to be a mixed business serving coffee from early in the morning, beer and cocktails in the evening with an overlap during the day. They have about 10 taps of craft offerings, mostly independent brewers, and including a couple I'd never seen before. They have a short menu of bar snacks. An unusual venue which is worth checking out if in the area but maybe not a destination in its own right. |
82 /100 38 MORT ST, BRADDON Nice place centrally located in Canberra. 8-10 tables outside and a smattering of seating inside. Tons of their own beers on tap. I was surprised at the wide selection. Pricy, especially if you want to sample high abv stuff. 4 packs for takeaway where reasonably priced. Staff was very friendly, offered samples of beer. Couldn’t stay for more than one flight but grabbed some cans to go. A must stop in Canberra |
82 /100 Plonk (Beer Store) SHOP 36, CNR NYRANG & MILDURA STS, FYSHWICK Wine and beer store located in a shopping market just outside central Canberra. Really extensive and interesting beer selection, covering international and Australian craft beers, plus quite afew ciders. Some are expensive, but does a discount on 6 and 24 multiple purchases. A must visit when in the capital. |
68 /100 Highroad (Restaurant) 1 WOOLLEY ST This is a new place in the heart of Dickson's Chinatown in Canberra's inner northern suburbs. It is essentially a cafe by day which on some nights of the week kicks on as a restaurant/bar. They have ten or so taps plus more cans in the fridge. I believe the taps are on rotation but not sure how often they change. The night we went they had about 3 or 4 Capital Brewing and 6 or so from Lord Nelson Brewing. The main reason to visit is for the food which was really good, as was the service. All up a decent venue for a nice meal that happens to have a reasonable range of beer on tap. |
64 /100 Ducks Nuts (Restaurant) 30 WOOLLEY ST, DICKSON A pretty standard sort of pub/restaurant offering burgers, salads etc. but which also has a dozen or so decent taps on offer. It is in the heart of the Dickson restaurant precinct and has two outdoor areas - one out front on the street and another out the back. It is quite a big venue with a couple of different seating areas. One point of interest is that they have one exclusive Bentspoke beer on tap. |
92 /100 Plonk (Beer Store) SHOP 36, CNR NYRANG & MILDURA STS, FYSHWICK One of the top two beer shops in the Capital and a bit of a Canberra institution. The selection of beers is outstanding and ever expanding, and the regular staff are real enthusiasts (Denis, Brett and Connor are always good for a recommendation). While the good gear they sell is not exactly cheap, they are still a bit cheaper than most of the better, serious beer stores operating online interstate. A wondrous establishment for any beer lover. |
68 /100 LLEWELLYN HALL, WILLIAM HERBERT PLACE Had some great beers from this brewery at their previous location many many years ago. So have been keen to come back. The ambience is weird - it's a modern Uni building on campus. The decor sits between English pub and student common room. Early on a Monday night it was very quiet. Good selection of beers. The could I tried were good, but not great. I do remover some excellent beers from here - RIS I think. Friendly service. Quiet comfortable place with good beer. |
66 /100 LLEWELLYN HALL, WILLIAM HERBERT PLACE Located on the ground floor of the ANU's school of music with minimal signage. It's a swine to find. Inside is a functional if uninspiring copy of a modern English pub. I liked the beers but not the jazz (too loud for Saturday afternoon in a small room) so I sat outside in the ANU's brutalist ambience. Go for the beer (hand pumps!). |
48 /100 The Pot Belly (Bar) 5/26 WEEDON CLOSE, BELCONNEN IN a sudo car and strip mall area of Belconnen. Dirty, smelly, and pretty vile inside and outside. Not a good place to be in the summer as no air con. Winters are best but the place is still rather dirty and just no vibe. Couple of their own taps and mixed craft. Sometimes good. others not. staff generally have ZFG. Better places to go for a beer in Canberra. Did I mention pizza as well? not very tasty at all |
74 /100 3/1 DAIRY RD, FYSHWICK The latest brewery taproom to open in Canberra is tucked away in a small industrial estate close to the Jerrabomberra Wetlands at the eastern end of Lake Burley Griffin. It has a few different indoor and outdoor areas surrounding the brewery infrastructure. They have about 10 or so taps of their own brews including a few seasonal and experimental offerings. There is a food truck selling burgers and the like but I'm not sure if it is open all the time. We didn't try on our visit. All up a nice place for a few beers. |
98 /100 38 MORT ST, BRADDON This is a great Brewery. Great selection of beers, including a good cidre and ginger beer for the non-beer drinkers. The food is good without being great, plenty of options, but the food pales in comparison to the beers available. Great fit out and vibe in both the upstairs and downstairs sections. It does get a bit crowded on Friday/Saturday nights, but that is simply a reflection of how awesome this place is. Great place for a quiet drink, a session or just a tasting paddle. |
88 /100 Plonk (Beer Store) SHOP 36, CNR NYRANG & MILDURA STS, FYSHWICK Very good range of styles and origins. A few of the beers I’ve picked up have been off, but I guess that’s always a danger with the more unusual stuff. As a local, whenever the fridge is looking bare, it’s off to Plonk. |
74 /100 The Durham Castle Arms (Restaurant) GREEN SQUARE, 2 JARDINE ST Pub with British-style ambiance, with a focus on craft beer from various brewers, mostly Australian. They rotate the taps regularly and usually have good stuff there. Nice place! |
66 /100 LLEWELLYN HALL, WILLIAM HERBERT PLACE Pretty good place if you like a beer somewhere fairly quiet and unpretentious. The place is a little hard to find and under-promoted, but they have a decent selection of beers, all brewed by themselves I believe. Compared to the other Canberra (Bentspoke), Wig&Pen is more British-styled than American, and overall a little lower quality. Still worth a visit if you have a few days in Canberra. |
94 /100 38 MORT ST, BRADDON Great selection here, given they brew all of their own beers. Good quality, unusual styles and good options for sampling. Only downside for me is it’s often crowded and very noisy, but worth repeated visits nevertheless! |
86 /100 Temporada (Restaurant) 15 MOORE STREET, CIVIC It is Hatted, so the food is good. Well more than good. One of the best regional restaurants in NSW/ ACT.
3 taps, does rotate pretty often and a good selection of bottles/ cans.
Can be expensive but it is worth it. |
76 /100 Page Bottler (Beer Store) THE PAGE SHOPS, PAGE PLACE, PAGE One of the better selections of craft beer available in Canberra with helpful and knowledge staff. |
54 /100 Transit Bar (Bar) 7 AKUNA STREET Nice bar with some rotating taps and pool tables. Has live bands and entertainment. |
72 /100 Page Bottler (Beer Store) THE PAGE SHOPS, PAGE PLACE, PAGE Small shop in Page, near Belconnen.
A good array of the right beers. Solid list of US, Australia, and Europe. Not as out there as Plonk has but a good selection. Remember it is not a huge selection but a well thought out selection.
Slightly cheaper than plonk and beers move quick in there. Great service every time in there and always something worth picking up. |
98 /100 38 MORT ST, BRADDON Great beers, great location, great ambiance, great people. |
90 /100 Page Bottler (Beer Store) THE PAGE SHOPS, PAGE PLACE, PAGE Tim runs a great little shop. Not the biggest range in town, but all the craft is top quality stuff, including some you can’t get elsewhere in Canberra. Very friendly and knowledgeable. One of my regular go-to shops. |
74 /100 Temporada (Restaurant) 15 MOORE STREET, CIVIC Temporada is a high end restaurant/bar but which unlike many similar style places, has a an excellent range of Australian Craft beers on tap (plus a good range of bottles too). The food is excellent mediterranean sharing plates. Well worth a visit if you want the best beers and food in one location. |
70 /100 Page Bottler (Beer Store) THE PAGE SHOPS, PAGE PLACE, PAGE This is easily the best beer shop in Belconnen. Probably the 2nd best range of beers I’ve seen in Canberra (besides Plonk across town). It’s only a small shop but has a great range of local, interstate and international brews, some wines and interesting whiskies. Service was excellent and prices reasonable with some good specials. |
66 /100 Debacle (Bar) 30 LONSDALE ST, BRADDON Not a bad place with a reasonable selection of brews on tap (including local and international crafts). It is pretty popular so can get crowded. The food we had was excellent. |
68 /100 The Old Canberra Inn (Bar) 195 MOUAT STREET, LYNEHAM This place has been around for a long time but since a recent revamp has started offering a good range of always changing craft taps. It has a range of different rooms (including a couple with fireplaces) plus some outdoor areas. They have live music occasionally and a selection of meals (which I haven’t tried). All up a decent place to down a few! |
88 /100 Plonk (Beer Store) SHOP 36, CNR NYRANG & MILDURA STS, FYSHWICK Wouldn’t have thought the best bottle shop I’d visit in Australia would be in Canberra. Huge selection of Aussie, NZ, European, and US beers, arranged by country. Prices seemed about average for the country (read: high). Service was friendly and helpful. Dangerous place to come for your wallet. If you can make it during their opening hours, it’s definitely worth visiting. |
38 /100 6/19 - 25 KEMBLA ST, FYSHWICK Located in an industrial park in Fyshwick about 15 minutes from the centre of Canberra. Nicely set up place. You can order a paddle of 7 beers for $14, served in what look like jelly shooter glasses. Every single beer was weak and watery, with a few seemingly infected. Seriously disappointed with the beer quality. Let’s hope they improve - as of now, definitely cannot recommend them. |
86 /100 38 MORT ST, BRADDON I wouldn’t have thought that my favourite brewery visit in all of Australia would be one in Canberra. Large selection of house beers on tap, including some incredibly ambitious ones, like a double IPA, a triple IPA and 16% quad! And the quality of the beer was most excellent for everything I tried. You can order a paddle of 4 for $16, or it becomes $24 if you include all the high gravity beers. Expensive, but at least you know you’re getting top notch quality. Service was a bit blazé and impersonal, but quick and informative. Absolute must stop if in Canberra. |
60 /100 LLEWELLYN HALL, WILLIAM HERBERT PLACE Located right on campus - seems a bit strange for a brewpub, but it works. Feels very student-y with mostly students as clientele it seems. 14 house beers on tap when we visited. You can order a paddle of 5 for $20, which is rather exorbitant especially considering it’s on campus. Beer quality was mediocre, mostly standard styles with a couple of more ambitious ones. Service was friendly and helpful. Worth stopping when in Canberra, but the new BentSpoke Brewing provides a much better experience all round. |
44 /100 Canberra Cellars (The Bottle-O Belconnen) (Beer Store) CNR LUXTON & JOSEPHSON ST, BELCONNEN This place has now changed to a ’Cellarbrations’ and has the usual selection of beers + a couple of barely interesting extras (Matsos and Lord Nelson). No longer any sign of the Victorian micro-breweries noted by a previous reviewer. Not worth a special visit really. |
80 /100 Plonk (Beer Store) SHOP 36, CNR NYRANG & MILDURA STS, FYSHWICK This place has an enormous range! One of the best bottle shops I’ve been too, huge range of both local and imported beers including some really interesting ones. Well worth a visit. |
74 /100 38 MORT ST, BRADDON Great food, awesome service, heaps of great beers (all theirs) on tap. Handy to have in the middle of the capital. |
