De Apotheek (Beer Store)
LOUIS VAN HOUTTESTRAAT 48
“New (August 2022) beer shop in Ledeberg, a part of Ghent; the name simply means pharmacy and indeed, from the late 19th century to several years ago, this place was actually a pharmacy (even my girlfriend recalls it being one). Now operated by a craft beer enthusiast as an additional income (and apparently under a certain instigation of Pedro, the owner of Bassin and one of the men behind L’Arogante beer), this shop only opens when he has the time for it, and that is not very often, or at least not during the normal opening hours of shops in general. I myself went on a Saturday shortly after noon time, following the opening hours given on his Facebook page, but found myself in front of a closed door – fortunately and after ringing the bell (together with a local lady also in search of beer), the owner opened the door and was willing to guide us around his assortment. It quickly became clear that what had started with a very limited selection, is now growing further and expanding into the household names of Euro craft beer (think Garage, Siren, Kees, Kromme Haring, Pinta, Põhjala, Pühaste and so on), with a very strong emphasis on foreign beers – in fact being “non-Belgian” in its selection, apart from a few very local things by Stroom or Dok, is part of this shop’s slogan. The interior of the shop has, oddly perhaps, been kept intact, with pharmaceutical bottles still occupying the shelves – the beers are displayed on and stored inside the old cupboards. Strangely, ladies’ pumps seem to be a recurring theme as well, seemingly to express elegance. Well, quite elegant it is, this new 'craft beer boutique': I love Ghent history and I love craft beer, and in this tiny little place tucked away in one of the city’s perhaps somewhat rougher neighbourhoods, both come together. Prices are normal for what you get, some beers will effectively be hard to find elsewhere (I never had encountered Althaia anywhere else in Belgium, for instance) and the owner is very knowledgeable about every bottle or can that he sells. I fell in love with this place immediately and will certainly return, hoping that this new beer boutique will last longer than the previous attempt made in Ghent at this type of store (BeerFreakChick)…“
