Friar Tuck (Beer Store)

“Pretty much like every other Friar Tucks you've been to but you make the journey over here to get some beers not available in Missouri. Nice selection of Chicago brewery's and they are probably a lot cheaper here rather than buying them in Chicago. Staff is hands off but that's ok, you kow what you are looking for. Probably a twice a year visit for me along with the total Wine in Fairview.“

“Great place. Ambiance wise it is exactly the same as other GB locations except it has more outside seating and a more extensive whiskey and cocktail menu being in IL. Had some exclusive and highly rated beers; you'll pay a pretty penny for them but I was impressed with their selection. Friendly service, a must stop if you are in the area.“

“My family and I absolutely loved this place. Many different styles of beer represented, my favorites pale ale and the were the Wabash pale ale and the 2211 IPA. Nice tidy space with tons of exposed brick, simple, not overdecorated or schlocky. Food consists of chips, cheese curds (which were excellent) and house made pretzels. They had an assortment of interesting Excel sodas for the kiddos. Service is friendly and patient - they don't act put out when you ask them a question. Get this: We had a sampler flight, 2 pints, 2 sodas, cheese curds, a bag of chips, an order of pretzels and I bought a take home bomber of their RIS, all of this cost $48! You can't beat it. Recess is worth going out of the way for.“

“Located on the main drag in Edwardsville. Nice place with a lot of rustic charm with brick and repurposed barn lumber. Bartender was very friendly and knowledgeable about the beers they crafted. There were 9 house beers and a guest beer on tap. The beers I had were well crafted and solid across the board. No food is available but I do not consider this a drawback. Quality beer and a relaxing atmosphere make this place worth checking out.“

“I like this little brewery and like the brewer. They opened in late 2014 and are kind of off the beaten trail and not really close to any other breweries. However, it is very easy to find and is located a block or two from the Edwardsville courthouse. Parking can be on street in front or they have a lot in back. Food is not available but can be brought in. Their beers are good and solid and often do a little bit of a twist to styles. I wish they brewed a bigger rotation of beers (being a ticker) but have enjoyed everything that they have produced. I think they have about 8 of their beers on tap plus ciders and wine made elsewhere. Matt is super nice and I wish him all the success in the world!“

Friar Tuck (Beer Store)

“I have been to a few Friar Tuck stores now and this one is very typical. This store opened a few months ago and seems to be kept very clean. It is located in a very busy retail corridor which makes it very easy to find. Parking is ample. As you walk in to the store the craft beer section is located in the left side and goes to the back wall. Always a lot of European and American standards as well as some locals. A homebrewers supply section contains the basics. Prices seemed to be in line.“

“Stopped in here for a flight. The place is in an old double storefront in downtown Edwardsville. Brick walls and wood floors make for a clean, rustic-modern interior. They had about 10 beers on tap and I picked four that sounded good. No food, just free bar pretzels and chips for purchase. The one guy working was friendly. Not a whole lot to it, just a nice, simple little brewery that makes for a nice trio of beer spots within a few blocks (along with Bigelo’s and Global Brew).“

“Opened March 2015. New store is clean and well organized. Beer selection is excellent. Prices are good. My only gripe is you have to check your beer carefully, it doesn’t appear they rotate the stock as often as they should. I purchased a Dogfish Head ApriHop March 2015 that was from 2014. I should of paid better attention.“

“Stopped in on a Sunday afternoon, we were the only two in the place. Very nice interior, lot of work went into the building. Nice bar area, about eight seats at the bar. The area is open plenty of room in the two areas. The brewery is on the other side of the bar area, nice glass viewing area. There were nine beers on tap, one sampler was of four beers, so we tried two samplers. Bartender was very knowledgeable and friendly. Gave us the history of the building and how he got into brewing and hopes to build from where he is now. Well worth the visit if you are in the area.“

“Unkle Munkeys is a cross between a bar/ restaurant and arcade. Their hook is it’s a retro arcade with classic pinball and video games. The food is upscale bar food and they have a decent selection of craft beers that rotate often. Well worth a visit!“

“First visit to Recess Brewing. The interior is very nice with lots of bricks and barn wood paneling. The bar tender was personable. The beers I sampled were quite good. My only gripe is the lack of snack / food options. They do allow you to order in and offer a very limited chip selection. It would be nice if there was some sort of appetizer menu. Still worth a visit.“

“This restaurant is located across from the courthouse and has been in business for a couple of years. Their food is top notch and prices are not unreasonable. I have been here a few times and in the past have had a Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. Tonight I had Dogfish Head Piercing Pils. Always good quality and quantity of offerings. Just a note, this is a busy restaurant so if you go on a weekend at 6 PM or so expect a long wait.“

“8 of us stopped in on a Friday evening at 8ish. The area is very open with long tables that have about 20 chairs. German style, perhaps. There is nothing to stop any noise so it is somewhat noisy. Food is quite good. They have a steak that is $55 which is far and away the most expensive item on the menu. Sandwiches are less than $10. They have about 20 taps and maybe a few more. I don’t know about bottles and they do not offer Bud Light (one of our party requested it and ordered a VERY spicy peppery bloody Mary instead). The have some nice taps with about half a dozen local. It was difficult to tell what is being offered on their small beer menu. It was more like a cash register print out. I had a "Live Pale Ale." Server said it was from Sierrra Nevada. No idea who brewed it. The beer came in a Mason jar. This is a trendy place and they have a lot of nice beers. Service was "iffy" and bar service was less. The food was good and so was the beer, whatever it was.“

“Yet another place that has opened since i left this area. Very much reminds me of ITap in STL-almost the same setup with 40ish taps and beer fridges on each side. Had some great beers here-some rare sierra nevadas and some local favorites as well. bartender was really hot and became more friendly as we started talking. If i still lived in this area, i would be here all the time!“

“It’s incredible that a gas station would have such a nice selection of craft beer. Not a large selection, but you can buy by the bottle (build your own 6 pack). You end up paying a little more because of this, but it’s a nice way to try out different beers.“

“Bin 51 mainly specializes in high end wines and liquor. The beer selection is modest but always high quality and they always seem to get the harder to find beers. Prices are a little higher that some of the other places in town but it’s reasonable when you’re looking for something in limited supply.“

“Stopped in on a Saturday afternoon, and only a couple of other folks were there. We were in between the lunch and dinner rushes, worked out good for us. Our waiter was very knowledgeable about their beer selection. Lot of local items, which is good. Tried a couple I had not had yet, so a couple more added to my list. The food selection was very good and our waiter recommended a couple of favorites. The building is a former bank, which adds to the atmosphere. Have been wanting to visit for a long time, if in the area again, would definitley return.“

“I usually stop by the O'fallon location on my way home from work. Both locations have 50 beers on tap and 200 other beers in bottles or cans. The selection can change day to day. They have a club that tracks all the different beers you have and rewards you at different levels.“

“Using their wifi to add this review. This is about 100 yards from Global Brew in a new shopping area. It is primarily a wine store with whiskey second. Beer after that. The beer area is not large but selection is pretty decent. They also get new releases and that includes harder to find ones. Prices seem reasonable and perhaps a tad below stores I have seen in StL. One staff member who is probably the owner knew his stock but, again, wine and whiskey are tops.“

“I had to stop when I saw a BP was listed as a place. This is literally your average small BP, but 1/2 of store is craft beer. Good stuff too including Founders Breakfast Stout. Tons of singles, not just mixed six. Some bombers and even Rochefort brews as well. Best gas station selection I have ever seen. They even have a Chimay sign in the window which I thought was awesome.“

“DONT WASTE YOUR TIME. I was in Edwardsville so I thought I would make the best of it and stop at the best beer store. They only have 2 coolers of beers, which has 6 packs in it as well. There is one other small self. While all the beer available is craft, the selection is too small. You are better off shopping at a supermarket. The store itself is nice looking but has a small selection on everything. They try to be boutique but not really. I was in and out in 2 minutes.“

“Excellent pub! Very crowded on weekends. But, once you get a seat and open a tab, service is great. Bartenders go out of their way to explain beers and provide unlimited samples. While it may seem pricey for Edwardsville, it is a great bargain for the qulaity and range of their beer selection. Global Brew has my loyalty every time I travel downstate to Cardinals country.“

“Located in a strange little vintage strip mall I used to meet a truck driver here to pick up beer for a different store out of the vicinity. The owner was always friendly and the service he provided to customers seemed to be top notch. I believe he was a wholesale side guy before he got into retail, thus extremely knowledgeable. The store is small and the selection is limited and reflective of the cross section demographic of this sleepy college town. Prices seemed a wee high but not over the top. Not a bad little place all in all.“

“Stopped in to try a few beers, and had a great time. The bartender, Adam, was very knowledgable, and very willing to let us try several of their taps. He made several suggestions and we were glad he did. The selection of beers is very impressive. Yes, it is similar to the ITAP set-up, but is unique with the second story view of downtown. We will definitely return, cheers!!!“

“Well, this is more of a wine shop than a beer destination. The owner was there to help, but was not much to choose from. We picked up a Sam Smith’s India Ale, for a decent price, but were disappointed in the beer selection. You never know until you try.“

“Went in to check the brew selection, and met the owner Jill. She said they will be expanding the selection in the near future, good thing. There wasn’t much to choose from, but she was really helpful and eager to point things out. We bought a mix-n-match six pack and a Southern Tier Creme brulee stout. Our six pack had some items that are not found on the Mo. side of the river, so was worth the trip. We will return when the remodel is complete.“

“We visited due to the review in the Sauce Magazine and weren’t disappointed. They primarily serve great pizzas with craft beers as a sideline. We tried a Belgium and a German brew, both were delicious, but so was the pie. I wanted to try the Devil Dancer, but they were out, so were went for the European beers. We arrived at opening time, so no waiting issue, but the place was filled by the time we left. We would definitely go again.“

“What a great place and concept!. 250+ brews with probably 60 or so on tap at any given time. Just beer - - no wine or liquor. No food served, but you can carry in or order in. The draft selection changes frequently, two dropped off and new were added while we were at the bar. So, you have to drop in or call to see what’s new. Love this place!“

Bigelo’s Bistro (Restaurant)
140 N MAIN ST
“(Visited 06/2010): Stopped at Bigelo’s on a drive between Belleville and Springfield. It is located on Main Street off St. Louis. Street parking was plentiful when I visited. The interior is relatively small, with the bar in the rear and table seating everywhere else. The color scheme is an interesting blue, yellow and salmon motif and there are tile floors. Some mariner-related decorations behind the bar as well but I did not get the impression that was the theme of the whole place. Bigelo’s beer selection is not overly abundant but it is pretty well thought out. They have 12 beers on tap from brewers like Schlafly, Great Divide (the Espresso Oak Aged Yeti Imperial Stout), Bell’s, Boulevard, Lost Coast and DFH to name a few. As for bottles there are around 15 including Schlafly, O’Fallon, Big Sky, Sierra Nevada and New Belgium. Not too much in the way of imports. Service on a late lunch at the bar was good. The bartender was familiar with the beers and was friendly. For lunch I had the signature Bigelo’s sub and it was very good, as were the homemade sweet potato chips. Overall the only knock on this place is there were a lot of gnats and flies buzzing around when I was there, and the staff acknowledged they had been fighting them. Not a big deal but worth noting. Still I would definitely visit this place again and would have stayed even longer had I not been on my way somewhere.“

“Funky little place in downtown Edwardsville, quality taps and short but sweet bottle list. Front dining area with artist designed tables, colorful walls, and art on the walls. The place had a good sized lunch crowd, and the bar seemed more of a service area, so we grabbed a table. Beer list was on a row of chalkboards, looked to be frequently rotating. Taps on the left, bottles to the right, and wine on the far right. Taps: Schlafly Reserve Imperial Stout, Monks Cafe, Goose Island Matilda and Pepe Nero (brand new), plus a few others that escape me. Bottles: SN 30th Ann, Torpedo, a handful of craft and imports, no macros, 20 in all. Service was laid back on a busy weekday afternoon, though we always had drinks. The table and floors were a little dirty, but I think that was just a result of the big lunch crowd. Overall it was a nice place for a beer and a meal, dont know how long id linger for drinks though, as space was limited, and it was more of a cafe vibe. Looks like they will have competition now from "Global Brew" which just opened up a few blocks away.“

“Interesting little place, in a 70’s era strip mall. The sign proclaimed "Wine, Coffee, Cheese" and I was halfway expecting a little cafe, but it was more of a small retail shop. Beer coolers were up front, a bit too close to the windows and sunlight, so I grabbed bottles from the back. There was a window display with minikegs, though I didnt see any for sale. Found Schlafly 20th Imperial Pilsner here for 12.99, and the Big Muddy lineup (Pale, Wheat, and Dunkeldog). The thing is, these bombers were 9.99, and I hadnt seen them elsewhere (until later finding them for $5 in Peoria). So they were double what they should be. Selection was small but quality, Expedition, Chouffe, Ommegang, some New Zealand beer, and a few more. Spirits selection in back was small but quality too, 25 scotches and 25 bourbons. Didn’t see any cheese or coffee, but there was plenty of wine. “

“Global Brew Tap House is in a strip mall just off the Main Street area in Edwardsville. It is on the second floor of a new-ish building above a sushi place and next to a salon and a Marines recruiting station- pretty strange location overall, and I couldn’t help but be amused at the surroundings as I walked in. The inside reminds me a lot of International Tap House Soulard. A lot. The lighting is low, the bar is high, and the 50 taps are all in a row behind the bar, flanked by four large bottle refrigerators. Flat-screen TVs rest above the taps and fridges. The place is brand new and still had that just-built smell. The service was slow initially, but then really friendly and engaging. The bartender said they never expected the crowds they’ve been getting so far and might beat opening-two-week expectations by triple. There is no food but you can bring it in and plenty of options are nearby. The crowd is a mix of locals and SIUE kids and overall seemed to be new to craft beer but very enthusiastic. Great place, the top overall selection in Edwardsville, even if Bigelo’s seems to get more exciting taps. Go to Bigelo’s for a meal and couple beers, then finish here. That’s what I did.“

“Located above the Wasabi restaurant. What a great beer bar! Fifty beers on tap, 200 bottles, and a very cool laid back feel. I stopped in on the Sunday after their Friday opening and things were running smoothly. They were very much anticipated and well received. They do not serve food but allow anything to be brought in. Pints were mostly $5 with some higher. For example, Chimay was $8. This bar will see me often.“

“Stopped in for my second visit last night. Peel is a restaurant that sells mostly pizza and it might be the best pizza in the St. Louis metro area. A very nice craft beer selection, too. I had a couple of pints of Big Sky Cowboy Porter. They probably a couple of dozen different beers to try. Our waitress last night was a self described beer snob and she seemed to know her stuff. The restaurant seems to pull off both a touch of elegance and a comfortable place to dine. The problem with it is that there are often huge wait lists. We went early on a Thursday and they had open tables. Weekend evenings, well forget about it. Also, it is dine in only. No to-go orders.“

“Bigelo’s Bistro is in the nice little downtown strip of Edwardsville. The interior is colorfol and hip, a nice renovation of an old storefront. Mark keeps a great tap list at any given time- not a wasted tap. Great coverage of regional beers, like Schlafly and Boulevard, and always some unexpected things. The food is excellent, way above that of most pub grub you’ll find. They’re even getting ready to release a collaboration beer with Schlafly, a Rye IPA that I’m very excited about. This is one of the most popular stops for beer geeks in the St. Louis area, so if you find yourself with the opportunity to get over to Edwardsville (about 30 min from downtown St. Louis), do yourself a favor and stop in here.“

“I was surprised to find Bigelo’s to not be on the RateBeer directory. It is located just across Main St. from the courthouse. This is an excellent bar/restaurant to get a top quality beer on tap. They have a 12 beer tap which usually include offerings from brewers such as Schlafly (ESB), Three Floyds (Alpha King), to name just a couple. Usually one macro will be on tap. The beer list is handwritten on a chalk board and changes often. This is also a great place to eat and their food is tasty, interesting, and reasonable. My one complaint is that Bigelo’s is too small. My last trip there found people waiting to be seated. Mark, the owner, is also a beer lover and recently hosted a home brewers organizational get together. Updated: Just had a New Belgium La Folie on tap there. Excellent and not easy to find.“

However, their beer offerings is impressive and I found a few bottles that nobody else has such as Farsons Traditional Shandy. A few others as well. I also had an Ofallon Cocoa Cream Stout on tap.Todd, my waiter, had sampled both beers I tried and knew his stuff. Crowd is an interesting mix of college students and lawyers. I had a sweet potato nacho appetizer that was both unique and very good. And again, trendy, which seemed to define the menu. Had a cheese plate once before that was excellent.“
