“Very cool building on the Great River Road. Service was good. Food was over priced for what it is (except the onion dip which was awesome. The beer, well it makes me want to be a wine drinker or non drinker. This place has so much potential given the location and building, but they fall short.“

“Nice location on the Great River Road that overlooks the river. The brewhaus is only open on the weekend. They offer a nice selection of beers but nothing special. The food menu has a good selection to choose from. Nice place to checkout if you are in the area.“

“We stopped in to see the newly expanded brewhaus. Very nice big room, lots of tables and room for a live band. There were 9 beers on tap, still working on the Bock Dark, maybe next trip they will have it. The brew master was not there, but the bartender had a pretty good grasp of the beers. We sampled several and were impressed with a couple that were combo beers. One was a Pilsner and Lemonade. May not sound good, but it is worth trying. The other was 50/50 Hefeweizen and Cola, not quite as good. Great view of the swollen river, would definitely visit again.“

“Great stop on a day trip to Grafton. Met the owner, very friendly and very knowledgeable. Food was good and would visit again. Great selection of brews, both tap and bottle selection. Was told they will be rotating the taps as soon as the warmer weather stays around. Well worth the visit.“

“Piasa Winery & Pub is on Main Street in Grafton, across the street from where Rotten Apple was and also right across from Grafton Winery. The bar in front is homey and warm, with wood lining and lots of beer and wine along the walls. There are 16 taps with some nice stuff- Boulevard, some Germans, Victory, Six Row, Schlafly, Bell’s, O’Fallon, and more. Really unexpected in quality available. Same goes for the bottle selection- they are the last place in the area with Rye-on-Rye, Hopslam, and Bourbon County Stout as far as I know. I can’t tell if the bottles are only for in-house or to go (wines are either, so I think it’s the same with beer). Prices on bottles looked like in-house prices because they were high. The staff was friendly and I should have asked this to clarify. I was too busy being surprised at how much great stuff was in here. We didn’t eat but the food didn’t seem like anything special. We did do a (free) wine sampling and bought a bottle- I really dig the Piasa bird label, a great nod to the local legend. Cool place and I’ll be back next time we make a day trip to Grafton.“

“We stopped in here on a weekend afternoon in February after driving some of the River Road through Alton to Grafton. The Grafton Winery building is interesting, very new-looking, with separate entrances for the winery and restaurant, Brewhaus, and gift shop. We opted to eat and drink in the Brewhaus, a small room on the lower level with a short bar and a couple visible tanks along with some high-top tables. There are only four beers and they’re okay. The food is okay, too. The service was about as friendly and helpful as possible, and everything was brought very quickly. Can’t ask for more there. We were told the place is expanding into the empty storefront adjacent to it, increasing capacity significantly. They expect to do 7 more beers in the near future and see the brewery as a major growth part of the business. Good to hear. There are a couple patios upstairs that would be nice in the warmer months with great views of the River. This place is right across the street from Piasa Winery and Pub, which has some great beers, so this is a worthy trip if you’re in the area and this place has potential to improve.“

“Showed up on a Sunday night about a half-hour before they closed, and the bartender was counting out for the night. He was really friendly though, and ran through the house beers and guest taps for us. The best beer here was Six Row Dunkelweiss, sadly the house beers tasted basically all the same with slight color variation. We were told the beers ferment for 3 days, condition for 3 days, and are ready to go... homebrewers I know allow 2 weeks for conditioning and natural carbonation. The house beers were all overly carbonated, making me wonder if they force carbonate everything. Apparently the "nut brown ale" here is a blend of the pilsner and stout... what? They did have one seasonal (red ale), but the bartender said they really dont stray from the basic "3" which to me says this brewpub is really just phoning it in. The potential is there, but they need to get more creative to make it remotely interesting. The Brewhaus was adjacent to the Grafton Winery, but had its own entrance and logo on the door. Spartan and clean interior, with a partial view of the river outside. Limited hours, only Fri-Sun. There was talk of expansion in the future, when the current tenant next door moves out. Currently there were 2 kettles behind the bar that doubled as serving tanks. A side row of 6 taps had Matilda and 6 Row Dunkelweiss, which was the unexpected gem here.“

“ This little place was pretty cool in the dead of winter, and likely much cooler in warmer weather when the deck and patio are open, facing the Illinois river. The building itself felt like a converted river house, with stone walls downstairs, and a screened in porch in the back. Inside it was small and cozy, with a wooden bar that sat 10-12, with racks of wine all around, and a four door beer cooler packed to the gills. 16 taps were promising, with a nice variety including a few limited seasonals. Among these were Founders Nemesis 2010, (which the blonde bartender described to a T: big, hoppy black barleywine), Boulevard Tank 7, Schlafly Irish , Kasteel, Six Row Whale, Bells Hell Hath No Fury, Pranqster, OFallon Hemp Hop Rye, Prima Pils, Optimator, and others. Bottles were pretty extensive with some obscure ones like Cottrell, Cathedral Square, and Griesdieck Bros. Pilsner. Fresh West Coast IPA from Green Flash, Lindemans Faro, Aventinus, Founders Porter, and more. Prices varied, but many singles were $3-4, with a 30% discount when you buy 6. Hopslam and Nemesis were priced somewhat high at $7.50. Crowd was all local, of various ages, and seemingly pretty lit up. The bartender gave us the story on why the Rotten Apple recently closed across the street, and how the town is very seasonal in regards to business. Grafton is fairly isolated, but worth a daytrip from Saint Louis, Springfield, or the surrounding area.“

“Stopped in on the Saturday before Memorial Day. This was our second stop here but the first since they began offering their own beer. I had an American Pilsner and a Stout. Both were tasty but I was especially impressed with the Pilsner which was quite well hopped and spicy. Food was tasty but not elaborate. Still, it was a step up from typical bar food. This was open air seating. It i a very nice facility and is only a couple of years old. They also have several other taps and some bottles. One tap was Goose Island Matilda. The location is right next door and up river from The Rotten Apple, another Grafton Beer destination. Almost across the street is the Piasa Winery which also has a nice bottle beer selection.“

“Not great but I was in a bind staying at a local B&B and needed good beer. This was the only place with ANYTHING decent ANYWHERE in site!“

“Although this is primarily a wine stop, they always have a nice bottle selection and some of them are ones I don’t see anywhere else around. They always have plenty of ciders as well. It is located almost directly across the street from the Rotten Apple. It is a very small customer section being about the size of an average living room. They also don’t seem to have great bargains. But again, always some fun beers to be had.“
