“First, the hours given are store hours, and not necessarily the hours they can serve beer and wine. If you haven’t been, Mariano’s is a new chain run by the former head of Dominick’s who had started remaking those stores like this before Safeway bought the chain and pushed it back to the 80s, and now to bankruptcy. Mariano’s took over many of the shuttered Dominick’s and has put in an upscale grocery chain with treasonable prices on staples, featuring a popcorn stand, BBQ stand, sushi bar, cheese shop, buffet, make-your-own trail mix bar, and, where allowed locally, a bar in the liquor department. It is sometimes hard to get waited on, and the selection at the bar itself is thin, but prices are very good, and they currently have a Firkin Friday special, often attended by the brewer if it’s a local beer. The small number of taps alternates between locals and choice nationals like Deschutes and Boulevard, and most bottled beers at the counter are $3. You can buy food anywhere in the store and eat it at the bar. More impressive are their beer aisles, with a walk-in cooler, and one of the biggest mix-a-six sections I’ve seen. If I could, I would just make this place my office. And take along some of their fresh-squeezed orange juice ($1.39 a pint) as a chaser when you leave.“
