“Visited with Margie, her sister, brother and his partner on Sunday 11th September 2022. We sat in between the front bar and the back terrace, in a kind of corridor (near the toilets actually). The roadside seating before entering was full, as it was a sunny evening (around 18:00). Nicely decorated throughout, bright and airy feel. Lovely tap list and a page of 'recommended bottles' on the beer menu; food menu interesting also, as were the four 'specials'. Picked up a few new rates and my Pasta meal was huge and very good. Pleasant young lad served us and he knew the beers and food on offer. Second visit, first review!“

“Superbe carte de bières! De bons petits plats ou même de quoi faire un apéro hors du commun. Une adresse à retenir“

“Pleasant Sea front bar with a protected terrace area. Reasonable beer list, some for me to go at anyway. Drink a few beers whilst getting a tan. Reasonable service. It's worth a look.“

“Superb Cafe Bar in the centre of Middelkerke, right by the Kerke actually. For a bar in a small town this maintains a huge list of beers with lots of changing choices from the more unusual breweries. The service was great, we were in the garden at the back due to the popularity of the pub. Quirky and friendly. A beer destination methinks.“

“Beer bar at the seaside in Middelkerke, not difficult to reach from the De Greefplein tram station. Visited with my girlfriend on a January night around 6 pm on a week day and the place was surprisingly crowded - clearly this pub is a hit among both locals and, to a lesser extent perhaps, seaside tourists. Managed to find a place at the counter to check the beerlist: a couple of interesting new and limited Belgian beers I haven't had before, but otherwise very classic - and exclusively Belgian, clearly the international craft beer movement hasn't penetrated Middelkerke yet... Haven't eaten there due to the lack of space, but the sausages and cheese to go with the beers were fine and generous in portion, served with top quality Wostyn mustard. Quick, friendly and knowledgeable service too (but it probably helps that we were attended to by the owner rather than the apparent job students who were also at work at that time). In all, a pleasant enough experience, very classic brown Belgian beer pub with very classic menu as said, but the immediate proximity of the sea helps to create atmosphere - to the extent that I may visit this pub again in summer, if only to see what has changed, if anything...“

“Bog standard Spar, not too sure why it’s on here? Biggest supermarket in Middelkerke but the beer selection is poor.“

“Still the place along the seafront with the largest selection of Belgian beers by far in Middelkerke. One of the least interesting bars decor wise, even the outside drinking suntrap is boring until you see the beer list and their A4 sized laminated new offerings. Although the choice is running at around 100 these days most regular Belgian geeks will struggle to find anything to interesting apart from the A4 sheet. Food is restricted to snacks and a couple of pasta dishes, staff OK. I visited for this review on 16th May 2017.“

“Une carte de 180 références classées par province et une sélection du mois viendront combler les amateurs de bière dans une région où les bonnes adresses ne sont pas légion. Très beau cadre et terrasse à l’arrière. Service super sympa et prix raisonnables“

“A surprisingly pleasant locals beer bar that serves a decent amount of traditional and more modern Belgian beers. Friendly and just knowledgable enough staff who serve beer and tasty bar food swiftly and at, especially for the region, at reasonable prices. It’s quite a bit out of the way, but worth dropping by if you are somewhat close and most certainly if you are in the town.“

“Nice bar with a better, if more expensive, beer choice than it’s near neighbour. Lots of interesting stuff from breweries such as De Struise & Dochter Van De Korenaar.“

Brasserie Iceberg (Restaurant)

“I was with my parents in Middelkerke, where they own a studio. We ended up having a drink at Brasserie Iceberg. Overall, the service was not bad (we were served by the owner; male). However, my Mom and I went to the bathroom and we noticed that the soap was finished. As we passed the bar, there were two women (my assumption is the owner’s wife and a waitress, although I am not certain). I told them that the soap was finished. As I continued walking next to the bar, I heard one of them say to the other one: "Amai, zo onvriendelijk," which is Dutch for "wow, very unfriendly." It was certainly not my intention to be unfriendly and I believe my tone was rather neutral. I actually thought that was kind of rude, so I said: "excuse me?" And I swear, they start laughing at me, a customer, in my face! Then they said: "I will give you the soap if you want to change it" -all while they continue to laugh- to which I replied "if you pay me by the hour, I will change your soap." In the meanwhile, they just continued laughing at my face, a customer’s face. I just was stunned that they would laugh with a customer for no apparent reason given that they are in the service business. Actually, I had tried to do the right thing by telling them the soap was finished and I have only had business owners thank me for letting them know. My Mom later explained to me that they don’t care about their customers. Their business depends on tourists -not regulars- and hence there is no need for them to build up any kind of customer relationship with people that might return. I still cannot believe this incident. I told the owner, who didn’t react nor apologize, and just continued walking. If I could give zero stars, I would.“

Brasserie Iceberg (Restaurant)
ZEEDIJK 132
“Brasserie Iceberg is a few doors west from the casino in Middelkerke and, from the outside, it’s indistinguishable from the many other cafés lining the long straight promenade. Inside, however, it has 8 interesting taps, including Straffe Hendrik Triple and Quadruple, Brugse Zot and St Omer, and 90 bottles. It’s a slightly old fashioned place, like so much in this mecca for traditional seaside holidaymakers. There’s a long narrow room with deep cherry red panelled walls with mirrors and cream leather banquettes. Outside on the prom, overlooking the beach huts, there’s a small patio with twelve square tables, a small parasol in each corner and a heater like a miniature lighthouse in the centre. The patio is enclosed in glass but it was still windy. Nevertheless, they were doing a roaring trade on a blustery bank holiday Monday. It was particularly popular with dog owners - a cartoon-style dog skeleton holding a bowl of water for dogs just by the entrance advertises its dog-friendliness. They serve fish-shaped nibbles and cheese with the beer and also do other food - pasta, burgers, pancakes, apple tart and ices. Like Schildia, further up the coast in Knokke-Heist, I wouldn’t make a detour to Middelkerke just to go to the Iceberg but it’s worth visiting if you happen to be in the area. (Visited 13 June 2011). “

“Was here more times @ 2010, and 18.06.2011 again. Beer 3th weekend June. All the more exciting it is to run across this first-class beer bar! "Den Toogoloog" An excellent selection of Belgian ales and sour beers. As Orval Ambassadors they stock several vintages of that trappist ale. Nice and recommended place !“

“I’ve been there multiple times and every time I found it an interesting and instructive experience.
Atmosphere: The atmosphere is just magnificent, in front you have a very cosy room which has been kept just like it was when they bought it, namely an old butchery, without the equipment ofcourse. The walls are completely covered with the original tiles and at the ceiling there is a large chandelier. This all gives you the feeling that you are in a living room. Just perfect! The other inside part is more modern and thus hasn’t got as much character as the front room. In the back there is a large and clean terras which is enclosed by the walls of the adjecent houses which together with the orientation (namely to the South-West) makes it perfect for the evening.
Service: The service is fast and skilled and I very much like the fact that they don’t open the bottle at the bar but take it with them to your table and open and pour it right before your eyes. You’ll always get a portion of salted nuts and some kind of homemade charcuterie or cheese with your beer which is always nice ofcourse.
Selection: The selection is good enough and offers you a wide range of Belgium beers and almost every brewery has been represented by some beers. I very much like the fact that they don’t sell any AB-Inbev beer (or other big commercial breweries) but give the people alternatives which are obviously much better. Aside that the pub is also an Orval Ambassador and proves this by offering you regular, 6 months, 1 year and 2,5 years (on my last visit) old Orval.
Value: Prices are well choosen and you must not forget that we are at the coastal area which makes it automaticly more expensive.
Conclusion: Overall I like this bar very much and I find it every time a great experience.“

“Middelkerke is the unspectacular seaside place for Belgian families and hosts a cheerful but unexciting (in terms of beer range) beer festival in mid-June. All the more exciting it is to run across this first-class beer bar! "Den Toogoloog" (Flemish-Greek for "bar converser") offers an excellent selection of Belgian, mostly Flemish, ales and sour beers (plus, for some occult reasons, Erdinger Weissbier). As Orval Ambassadors they stock several vintages of that trappist ale -- a fine occasion for a vertical Orval tasting. Solid knowledge and affectionate advice.“
