“Just across the bridge from Cincy, this place has a tight parking lot in front. It's a BBQ joint, so it smells like meat in side -- no so great for veggie types. They had about 20 taps, with many ambitious BA styles at this point. I tried 6 beers, including many BA beers. Unfortunately -- and I'll be blunt -- they don't know what they're doing. They don't know how to use the barrels, as all the BA beers were boozy, hot, and full of perfumey notes without any beer body depth. They need to learn how to brew. Service was a bit impatient; comfortable spot, but not a beer destination.“

“Build your own 6 pack at $9.99 with 120 singles from which to choose. Easy parking. Beer is on the left as you walk in. Typical beer selection from health food stores with emphasis on local and craft beer. Limited bomber selection. Sells antelope meat. Update on 12/22/17 - they have expanded their beer selection and have a bunch of FFF as well as lots of local beers (tri-state).“

“designated parking. does flights. beers are getting better. been here three times now, including opening week. Great decor but seems to always be empty. When you walk in, all the way to the left in the back corner, there is a fridge with bottles for sale. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. nasty glare if you sit at the bar as the Sun sets. Has 18 taps and all house beers.“

“Visited on a Sunday afternoon with the wife and phaleslu. It was a bit of a slow afternoon with a party outside on their patio, and then just a few folks inside. The parking lot is weird, as the direction of the spaces was backward from what I would expect. Maybe we came in from the wrong direction? Inside is pretty large. You could fit a lot of people in there. There are several tables set up, a decent sized bar, and a living room style area with couches and a coffee table. There was a television on the wall in front of where we sat with a hockey game on at our request. Food was not available to order, but they had a popcorn machine with various flavoring shakers at no cost. That was a nice snack during the visit. Flights of 4 5 ounce pours are $7. They had 11 beers and a cider on tap for this visit. All the beers were at least decent with a couple I really enjoyed. As Peter mentioned in his review, they are going for the more traditional, low key styles. So nothing crazy, but all good. I would visit this place again. I liked that is wasn’t super busy, but if word gets out they can make good beer, that won’t last long.“

“I visited here for the first time with JStax and his wife on a slow Sunday afternoon. The place is in the first floor of an old brick warehouse building in downtown Newport, just off the main drag (Monmouth Street - it faces York). There’s a parking lot with odd striping just to the north, and plenty of street parking. There’s a patio, and the door is on the side of the building facing the lot, not the street. The long main bar greets you as you walk in, with a clear menu of today’s offerings. The space is a really nice renovation of the old building, basically the whole first floor. There are a couple TVs and a popcorn machine, with some coolers way off in the left corner with bottles to go. There are some barrels along the back wall between the coolers and the bar. Plenty of tables of different varieties, and even some board games. There were 12 beers when I visited, all house taps. The quality was solid but nothing stood out. They’re doing more low-key styles, which is fine with me. Flights of four are $7. The pours seemed pretty good, too; maybe 5 oz. glasses? All in all, a good, worthwhile stop while you’re in Newport, and worth the trek across the river from Cincinnati.“

“The owners have put in a lot of work making this into a first-class space, including plenty of lot parking. Presently they only serve their own brews, but there were 11 available when I visited. Flights of 4-5oz samples are $7.50. A good place for anyone who is in the area.“

“Visited after dinner on a Tuesday. Shiny new place located a few seedy blocks off the river in Newport. Ample parking in the lot out front. Big tasting room, tables and bar seat up front, additional seating to the right, and a ton of space to stand to the left. Looks like it is built for a crowd. The help was crazy friendly and knowledgeable. I visit a bunch of places, and I would say this was one of the top 5 bartenders I have ever been served by. One of the brewers stopped by to chat as well, which was very cool. 10 house beers on and 1 guest cider (Ciderboys). 4 beer flight is $7, full pours also available. Fun stop, very impressed by both the level of investment and the quality of beer right out of the gate.

82 = ★★★½ (Solid place, near the top of the list for locals and visitors)

I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Visited after dinner on a Tuesday. Located one block off the river on the Kentucky side of Cincinnati. Decent sized parking lot out front, nothing unique about the exterior - looks like an event hall. The interior however, is authentic German beer hall all the way. Nice wood picnic tables through the middle, plenty of seating at the bar. Solo accordion player playing all the Oktoberfest favorites. Bier garten out back looked inviting, though it was February. 5 house beers on draft available as half or full liter, as well as growlers to go. The brewery is behind the bar, and the industrial kitchen is somewhat open and overly bright to the right. Good vibe, friendly service. Traditional German food menu. Fun place, authentically done.

70 = ★★½ (Locals should check it out, visitors with extended time)

I only use the total score, not the component parts.“

“Cool in the fact that it’s a docked boat and has a good amount o beers on tap. Food ordered was just a pizza, oven baked at the house was probably better, but oh well. View of the river, good selection on tap. Bartender wasn’t very knowledgeable about beer on tap either.“

“Overview: Hofbrauhaus Newport (henceforth HbN) is Kentucky’s answer to the German bier hall. Until this visit, I wasn’t aware that this Hofbrauhaus was the first American location for the well known Munich landmark. Located in the Newport on The Levee tourist entrapment area, HbN offers two spacious dining areas and a very large biergarten out back. Many of the tables are of the long, communal type, though some booths are available along the perimeter of the largest dining room. Seating mainly consists of large, backed benches. The decor is exactly as you’d expect for a German bier hall- lots of old photos, banners and other items of historic interest, including some that celebrate the area’s brewing tradition, such as the Wiedemann brewery. As mentioned by many reviewers, accordion polka-style music is featured near dinner time.

Service was Leo, who was friendly and efficient, serving many other tables including ours without skipping a beat. He seemed to know their beer well, and was comfortable comparing their beers to other comparable styles to find what I’d like best. The selection is small, but I’d say that the quality of what is offered is to be regarded- Besides the original (Helles); Dunkel and Hefeweizen, the Hopfen Spezial, a red lager (Urbrau) and a Radler were also available. Everything I tried- the hopfen spezial, original and hefeweizen- all seemed brewed with a high attention to detail. Yesterday we (my family) shared a few pretzels with our beer ($9.99) which was very delicious and included two beer cheeses and a sweet mustard. I thought the prices on food were all a bit high, which is to be expected in a touristy area. I’m happy to report that flights of beer are now available alongside the half liter and liter pours.

PROS: Authentic bier hall feel, Professional, well informed service; quality beer selection; good food. CONS: A bit expensive all around. OVERALL: I’ve needed to re-rate this place for sometime, and I’m glad I was able to make a return visit. Near the beginning of my craft beer journey, I gave this place a very poor review; at that time, only places with a massive selection and flights would have garnered anything near a worthy score to me. Yet, I feel that places like HbN better represent where I am now on my beer journey- a high quality place where I’d be happy to return with family, friends or both; a place where ticking takes a backseat to companionship and community. Unfortunately, all parking in the area is paid, unless you are willing to walk from the city center away from the levee (around 20+ minutes). There’s a parking garage across the street towards the river that has $3 parking. The Hofbrauhaus lot was $5; I’m not sure if that’s everyday, or for the weekend...still cheaper than parking in many metropolitan areas. If you’re into coffee, Carabello’s in town is more than worth a stop. Oh, and Hofbrauhaus Newport is now ***A NON SMOKING ESTABLISHMENT! YAY FOR BREATHING!***“

“In the Newport Shopping Center. Clean space with all the fresh natural foods one would expect. The beer aisle does have 75 singles, covering a lot of local and regional brews, but nothing new. I was hard pressed to assemble a six-pack of beers I’d not yet rated. There are more choices in the six-packs, but I don’t know if they can be purchased as singles, because, even though there were a lot of workers stocking shelves, etc., no one made any effort to help me. Overall, better than Kroger, but well below Party Town and Party Source.“

“I suspect this might be the oldest building in the area, and the pic here partially confirms that. From the angle shown there are three new buildings in the background! Visited kinda late on a Tuesday and the place was mostly deserted but the live polka band was still playing so that was cool. I thought food prices were a little high for the quality. My jager schnitzel was under-seasoned and oddly sweet. 5 x 5 oz. flight was $7.50, not bad. The beers are all decent and drinkable. Not a ticker’s paradise, but probably worth it to have some fun with friends.“

“If this place had a bit more of a selection, it would be rated a LOT higher. I absolutely loved this place. This has some of the best German food I’ve ever had. They only had five of their own drafts on, which was disappointing, but I understand it. I did have their dunkelweizen, which was tapped the day before, and it tasted great and fresh. The ambiance was awesome - the waitresses were in the German outfits, there was a German polka band playing, it was a huge hall, and really a lot of fun. Really glad I stopped by.“

“Good downtown Newport bar and grille atmosphere. Not a lot of taps. but all are good regionals. Nothing new or exciting, just the good things you’d expect. “Stopped in on a Saturday shortly after they opened with drsilverworm. The parking lot was pretty open, but Chris said that is out of the ordinary and that later in the day, they would be so full that the parking lot becomes a pay to park types situation. That’s no good. The place has a huge dining area with a lot of woodwork. There’s a bar toward the back of the dining area. Brewing equipment is visible behind the bar as well as in a room off to the left. The manager gave is a quick tour of the brewing equipment and talked shop with us. The bartender serving us took our order and had it to us pretty quick. Fairly attentive. I ordered a sampler of all their beers. It came out slightly out of order, but the beers are all different enough I could easily tell what was what. They had four regulars and a seasonal on. There is food available, German fare mostly I believe. I didn’t see anybody eating, but Chris says he has heard good things. This is a pretty cool place with a nice atmosphere. I would come back here for sure, but I would definitely want to come here before the masses show up. I’m not really willing to pay to park in a parking lot.“

“Ambiance: A typical Hofbrauhaus but in a good way....german hall, flags and breweriana everywhere, long picnic tables, L shaped bar that can seat about 20 patrons Service: The bartender was friendly, prompt and knowledgeable Selection: 6 in house beers on tap, typical good Hofbrau quality but always a small selection Food: Had the schnitzel sandwich with the beer cheese soup on top....decent Value: Two beers and the sandwich was just under 21 bucks. Decent for the quality Overall: This was the last of the US Hofbrauhaus that needed to visit....consistent quality and service at all“

“The atmosphere is solid Geramn beer hall, but the selection of five taps, although authentic, is limited. The brews skew toward the malts rather than hops, which is expected. Service was so-so, even for a Wednesday. Food is good Geramn fare, bujt a little on the pricey side (C’mon, $9 for a hot dog? Where are we? Reds stadium?) Good for session drinking and partying.“

“This place... I have stopped here maybe a dozen times throughout the last 4 years. Usually Cincinnatians gather here on weekends to get a little silly and have giant liter-sized mugs and get weird out in the biergarden after their 9-5s. A great place to gather, have fun, and meet up with old friends I grew up with... That’s 90% of my experience here, someone I haven’t spoken to in a year tells me to get my ass down to hofbrauhaus and I do. Usually it’s loud and rowdy on weekends, not my style, but usually a fun time and a very unique experience ... There’s a type of person that loves that kind of thing, but it’s not me. I’m here now at 6pm on a rainy monday to try their new IPL though, and it’s much more chill. Music is totally german biergarden style, but it’s at a reasonable volume today (though it can get loud on weekends when they bring in live bands). Bar is not packed at the moment, I’m here in relative peace. One thing that always wins at Hofbrau Newport is the beer. Yes, it’s brewed on-site and it’s much better than even the Hofbrau Munich bottles are. Always fresh and delicious, unless you order the Light beer. That one is fresh but not delicious. 5 taps at any time, 4 flagships and 1 rotating seasonal. I came here today to try the brand-new IPL and it rocked my socks off. Portions are a half-liter or a liter. No pansy snifters here. Selection is limited but what’s on tap is very good for the most part. These mugs are built for clinking. Bartenders and waitresses wear classic german outfits, which is fun. They’re used to local assholes though, I don’t blame them for their brevity. Overall, I don’t mind stopping by here to meet up with old friends and to try new seasonals whenever they become available. My half-way beer geek friends have already grown tired of it, though, they wouldn’t even meet me here to try the IPL again with me. They "could only take so much german music" was the excuse I got.“

“This is a fun place to dock your boat and grab a beer. The fact that you can do that is cool. The fun stops there, though. If not traveling via boat I can’t think of any reason to stop by this place. In fact, I’d rather have docked the boat and gone to the Hooters next door. The place doesn’t have a great ambiance. Feels chintzy, kind of dark, loud, lots of drunk people around, one of those types of places. Easy to get a 4 top table though, with a decent view of the river. Wide selection of taps, but the beers are served in plastic cups and the bartenders have no clue what they are serving. I noticed a Rogue XS handle, so I asked the bartender which one in that series it was. They had no idea. I asked what color it was, and they couldn’t even tell me that. The beer ended up being flat and awful when I got it, had probably been sitting in the line for months. My buddy ordered a Bell’s Smitten and was served some awful-tasting brown beer. Some specials like out-of-season Pumking for $3.75 offered, but that doesn’t seem like a great deal if it’s as bad as the other beers were. I have to applaud the effort of having a wide selection of beers on tap, but if my experience was typical, this is a disservice to craft.“

“I have been here a few times and always left satisfied. the food is above average bar fare... wings, burgers and the like. The beer selection, although only 8 or 9 taps is pretty good. A nice mix of imports, and nice crafts along with the obligatory in Newport BMC. I would recommend this as a quick dinner spot for anyone close by.“

“Best time to visit is when the reds are not in town because otherwise parking is $5. Nice terrace with view over Cincinnatti downtown. “Pompilio’s is a mixed bag - in the original restaurant, it is everything you’d expect in a neighborhood Italian place (10); in the newer addition, the ambiance isn’t as effective. The beer list is mostly big box with the addition of Peroni and Moretti, and the new Wiedemann’s on tap. Overall, great for food and ambiance, limits on the beer. We were here on a Monday night and there were a total of 10 patrons milling around. The beer selection is very solid. “Finding this place was a bit tough as it wasn’t where the GPS said it would be. Finding a place to sit down inside was just as tough as it was packed late on a Friday night. Luckily a nice couple gave up their spots at the bar for us so we were able to eat and sit, which was nice after walking close to 30 miles the last two days. The place reminds me of every other German style brewpub/restaurant I’ve been to. Large, wooden, festive, german garb worn by all and large pints of lager with nary a hop in sight. The food was good, the beer was okay and the service was great. As a personal aside, I hate valet parking and it’s the only option here. I can park my own vehicle and don’t want anyone else in it. Perhaps it’s a way to get people from parking in their lot and heading elsewhere.“

“update: the liquor store annex to the right, has singles you can assemble for $8.99 a six pack. They have craft beers and five decent 750ml bottles from which to choose (Trois Philosophes, Chimay Rouge and Bleu, a Framboise Lambic and Sierra Nevada). There is also a Kroger liquor store nearby that may have more of a selection, but I didn’t go in. I was shocked to find DFH Raison d’Etre. “Service was slow at first and then whimsical and entertaining waiter appeared and was quite knowledgeable about their beers. Atmosphere was beergarden meets Christmas Oompah music. Places offers a great selection, but 75% are seasonals (one a month with a handful as reserves). Food was hit and miss. I loved their wursts, but their sauerkraut was not sour. “If you like being taken advantage of as a tourist, this place is for you. I must be a masochist, but I check this place out every time I’m in Cincy, because they brew great German beer that is fresh. The problem is that the food has really gone downhill...the schweinshaxe is now $24.95, and the other entrees were obviously mass-produced and should be an embarassment to their Bavarian owners. I heard a rumor that they are losing an exorbidant amount of money from people stealing their masskrugs and it appears that they are trying to make it up in their food prices. I would like to be able to recommend the Hofbrauhaus for the beer only, but they have a very limited selection. Americans have become spoiled by having a lot of choices, so If they could offer some of their seasonal speciality brews year round, it would be a must stop. I realize that suggestion flies in the face of tradition, but for the four styles of beer on tap, it’s not worth your while unless you’re in Newport or downtown.“

“A fun German brewpub in downtown Newport KY (right on the Ohio River). I happened to stop by during Oktoberfest, which was pretty fun (lots of people dressed up and they had live music). It is German-hall style with a square-bar and then long wooden tables where everyone can sit together. There are tables outside as well. Obviously, only German beer served, roughly 5-6 taps. I tried the Weizen, Oktoberfest, Premium Lager, and Dunkel and all were very good (and this is someone who is not particularly a fan of German styles). The beers are served in 1/2 or full liter mugs (or weizen glasses). I got the chicken spatzle which was very tasty and some potato and bacon soup, which was also very good. You can’t go wrong with the food, although some of the items were on the pricier side. I had a great time here during my 2 visits and would enjoy going back again.“

“This place is similiar in style to the one in Indy. Open, kind of sport bar style with lots of beers on tap. Service is questionable; very dependent on who waits on you.
