78 /100 1165 E MCNEESE STREET We came here on 20.7.2022. They just celebrated their 5 years anniversary. Very large place. Upper floor with great view into the brewery plus canning line. Outside patio on both floors + music stage. Super nice and attentive service, proactively offering samples. On the beers I was mixed. Double IPA’s are the best choice here. |
64 /100 Luna Bar & Grill (Restaurant) 719 RYAN ST It's funny, I've been doing work in Lake Charles for a year. Anytime I asked where to go for good beer, Luna never came up. But it is a sort of local icon for music and food. I've finally visited, and frankly was more impressed by their beer selection than the food. They have a solid 20 or so taps, all dedicated to local/regional choices, with a good mix of styles and a couple unusual ones. So for a visiting beer geek, the place is worth visiting. As a foodie, it was good, but I was a bit let down, but that's for another website ... |
66 /100 MacFarlane's Celtic Pub (Restaurant) 417 ANN STREET Tucked away in an easy-to-miss corner in historic downtown Lake Charles, they actually did a pretty good job of creating a semi-authentic slice of Brittanica, dark woods and all. The inside bar (only 6 seats) and dining room are pretty small, but they have a nice outdoor patio, too. Particularly for this part of Louisiana, they have a gargantuan bottle list (plus what has to be the area's most diverse selection of whiskeys). They have 15 taps, only a couple committed to macros. They also offer a couple quality imports (Guinness of course), Grimbergen for example, plus about a half dozen local/regional offerings, a couple of which I hadn't seen elsewhere in town. I didn't eat but the shepherd's pie being gobbled up next to me looked authentic and comforting. The poor staff has to wear some gaudy logo shirts and kilts. Bartender was good if not overly friendly. I was taken a bit back that my happy hour, 1/2 price pint of a Louisiana beer was still $4. Not sure full-price $8 pints would encourage me to visit for dinner, but worth dropping by for an after-work pint. |
62 /100 Cousin's Lebanese Cuisine (Restaurant) 2612 KIRKMAN ST Not a place I'd ordinarily add to the RB database, but beer options in places like Lake Charles are hard to find, and surprisingly, Cousin's has a very good lineup of regional/local taps. Top that with a super-friendly owner and staff, and some unique and very well prepared cuisine for the area, and this is a good place to stop in the area. |
78 /100 1165 E MCNEESE STREET I understand they built this place from scratch -- they did a great job. Set back a nice distance from a major thoroughfare near MSU, this is a nice space, semi-industrial, but also inviting. I first visited on a "food truck invasion" night, so there were a lot of food options. Right now, the taproom only offers pizzas. I had one, which unfortunately wasn't that great. They had about 15 house beers on tap, in a wide variety. I've had a few around town and tried three more on my first visit -- all have been well made, clean and average to slightly above. I'm now a regular when in town. Brewery #830. |
76 /100 Hokus Pokus Liquors (Beer Store) 4140 JACKSON ST The best beer retailer I've found in Lake Charles with lots of quality regional, national and import selections, including a nice array of mix-and-match singles. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. |
68 /100 Rikenjaks Brewing Co. (Restaurant) 3716 RYAN ST I guess this place is a spin-off of a short-lived brewpub in town, maybe in a different location (?). It's now a fairly simple, down-home American tavern. On my first visit, all 9 taps were dedicated to Louisiana-brewed beers, served by a beer-savvy bartender. The menu is standard pub fare. My sandwich was simple but OK. Prices are fair. The outdoor space is popular, crowded, pet-friendly. |
58 /100 Mellow Mushroom - Lake Charles (Restaurant) 3420 RYAN STREET In a very-well-redone space (I think maybe it was a garage?) with an industrial vibe that suits Lake Charles, this new Mellow Mushroom location offers the typical 'Shroom fare. Lots of regional taps plus sturdy others. Good food. Nice outdoor seating area. |
38 /100 Homsi’s Tobacco and Beer, Inc. (Beer Store) 2612 KIRKMAN ST Decent selection, but as people have said before, quite dusty and risky looking. Still, I got some Belgians that I can’t find in Texas that looked reliable. |
62 /100 Luna Bar & Grill (Restaurant) 719 RYAN ST Decent little spot in downtown Lake Charles. Not a great selection, but they do feature 4 taps of beers from Lazy Magnolia in Mississippi as well as the standard Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, etc... Food was good and so was the service. They had a guy playing guitar and singing that was a bit loud for such a slow night, but the visit was certainly enjoyable. |
48 /100 Homsi’s Tobacco and Beer, Inc. (Beer Store) 2612 KIRKMAN ST Given that there is nothing in Lake Charles, I guess this would be the place to go to. Decent selection, but unfortunately almost everything is very old. Be careful and check dates and watch for dust. They had Troegs, but it was all 3 year old ambers and browns. |
40 /100 Homsi’s Tobacco and Beer, Inc. (Beer Store) 2612 KIRKMAN ST Took a 3 hour car ride to get to this place, from Houston to Lake Charles; was it worth it....
Pros:
Selection is kinda impressive, the guy could order a bunch more, had bits + pieces from Mikkeller, Troegs, 3 Fontein, Giradin, Oud Beersel, Zea, Harvieston, Rogue, Abita, crazy Lithuanian stuff, St-Ambroise, and Thomas Hardy..
impressed, i was until i got home...
Cons:
This guy is in the wrong place, location and in his mind...
In the 30 minutes i was i the small aisle, probably 10 people came in and bought either a 32 ounce High Life, Schlitz Malt Liquor, or Bud Lite...Also, nearly all the bottles had some degree of dust, and some of the older bottles had lots of black sediment... over 50% i’d say were gone ...
Overall:
you need good beer and are stuck in Lake Charles, try it out, but check every bottle for sediment and dust.. then throw it in the owners face.. just kidding Homsi.... then go gamble...
the guy running this place is a real prick... |
88 /100 Homsi’s Tobacco and Beer, Inc. (Beer Store) 2612 KIRKMAN ST THE place to buy beer in Lake Charles. It has the largest selection available in the area that I’ve ever seen. If he doesn’t have it in stock, it can probably be ordered for you. |
