“The inside has an industrial warehouse feel to it but has adequate seating and tables, plus seemed to be both pet and family friendly. Staff were friendly. There were something like 10 taps on when we visited plus some can pours available. A variety of styles were covered from IPA, to brown ale, via wee heavy to a quad. Cans and growler fills were also available to go. The stand-out beer for me here was the Surrender Rye IPA. Worth a look, especially as there are not so many taprooms in the area.“

“Amazing place in Rockville that a friend told me about. Headed there for breakfast on a Saturday and was stunned at their selection. Stacks and stacks of Aslin, Commonwealth and tons of other stuff. So many sixpacks from Maryland breweries I've never even heard of yet - these guys really have a load of stuff. Deli has great sandwiches you can eat at the bar, which does pints, about 32 taps when I was there. Price OK on the taps, service friendly though the morning guy didn't know a lot about beer. Bartender probably comes in later. The only issue isn't really an issue, which is that there were only a handful of singles available, so not a great place to pick up tons of ticks. Their selection really is next level though, and they do have a few singles in the fridge to the left of the entrance. Definitely one of the best places in the greater DC area for selection overall, and the taps at the bar add to the greatness. I think they do growlers as well.“

“This place looks like a cross between a sandwich shop and a stock room. Service was friendly. Tap list was good and bottle shop area contained some interesting beers. Bit pricey but still one of the best beer places in Rockville (not that there is all that much choice).“

“ This is another new brewery to open in Montgomery County, once a beer wasteland. Located in an industrial park off Gude Drive, True Respite is a modern, bright and airy venue with a large tasting room furnished with a smattering of tables with a small bar in the corner. There are plenty of events here along with food trucks on the weekend. They offer about nine taps that rotate frequently. This was the first time I took home a "crowler." If you need a pub crawl, the Saint's Row brewery (See My Review) is a five-minute drive away. “

“Opened in October 2017, this is a nice little brewery located a short drive (or bus ride) from the Rockville Metro Station. It sits in an industrial area of small businesses that have garage doors for entryways; Saints Row is no different. Upon entering, you notice the small wooden bar in the back; the small tasting room is decorated with about a half dozen high-top tables accompanied by the ubiquitous plastic stool. The beers are well-crafted - the brewer once worked at Union Craft in Baltimore (See My Review.) There are about six on tap with frequent rotation. During my visit, I enjoyed eight-ounce tastings of a Rye IPA, a Belgian Ale, a sour berry Gose and a pineapple IPA. All in all, it is good to have another brewery here and plan to return soon. “

“Ambiance: You're not coming here for a hoity-toity experience, you're coming here for good-to-great beer. It is a hole in the wall garage where the snack cake outlet used to be. Yes, that's a thing. What it Hostess or Tasty Cake or whatever? Can't remember. It is bare bones. Service: It's great. Whether it's the main man Tony or one of his friends (eg Steve), you wanna talk beer this is a good spot. They know what they're about. Selection: Up to six taps I think, all of which is theirs, all of which has been extremely well-executed (even if not in one of my favorite styles). Food: N/A. I don't know if there's room for food trucks here given the small parking lot. BYOF if you want to eat something. Value: Great. They don't offer flights but they offer 2-3 different sizes for the beers. For a basic beer I think you can get 5, 8, or 12 oz. For others, it's 8 or 12 if I remember correctly. It's not steep. Overall: This looks like a fly-by-nite operation but they are putting heart and soul into making outstanding beers. It has the vibe of a place that's getting ready to explode into popularity, bringing out the type of dreaded Hazeboi Hype-bros who like to line up three days in advance for the latest 4-pack and then brag about it on Maryland Beer Drinkers Club facebook page. But the beer is darn good. Definitely worth a stop.“

“Small hole in the wall nanobrewery in Rockville. They have five taps off a pretty small system, and all of them are above average with a couple of real stand outs for me. They don't do flights but they do 8 oz pours for $4 or so. The place is barebones, really just a garage, with a few board games and such on the tables and a collection of tables out in the parking lot overlooking a suburb baseball field. They seem to have space to expand in the back, which is good news as I hope these guys have success based on quality of beer. Dogs are allowed, which was a little annoying as one dog barked at a super high pitch the whole time. I don't mine having dogs, but there should be a well-behaved dogs rule.“

“Good brewery with above average beer and friendly staff. Great to visit a place these days which does everything right, and even better than normal. There were 10 beers on tap when I visited, all available in 5oz or flights, and these are fairly well priced at $2.50 a pop. They also sold a couple cheese pretzels and things. Staff was friendly, and beer was good. Look and layout of the place is like most breweries, and tours seem to be at will, though I didn't actually ask.“

ambiance: Typical bar space with restaurant. Small stage area for live music. In the ground floor of the new hotel in the Rockville Town Center. Park in the garage right there. service: hmmm...not...great. First visit, and they’ve been open less than a month. Only two servers on duty on a Saturday early afternoon (just post-lunch), so these two guys were very busy. Our guy was definitely on his first gig as a waiter. Very nice, but frazzled and slightly forgetful and overwhelmed. Couple dings here: menu listed brunch, but we were told "we’re not doing brunch for another couple weeks yet"; we were charged a full pint price for one of the beers in our flight; they don’t validate parking ("soon, we hope"). So they have some stuff to tighten up here. They also seem to have a need for some more experience behind the bar. The pours in the flight were uneven, and a couple of the pints came out just absolutely drippy. UPDATE: November 2018: Service is still uneven and tends to be slow, but it's improved overall, especially at the bar. THEY STILL DON'T VALIDATE PARKING. selection: Phenomenal. About 50 taps and 500 bottles. Can’t be beat. food: Really nice. Huge pretzel with some of the best beer cheese sauce I’ve ever had. Great burger. Great tater tots and fries. My wife loved her fried shrimp tacos. I was really hoping to try the brunch food, but alas and alack... value: Pricey, even for the DMV. Would like to see some specials on hard-to-move kegs or bottles. overall: Based on the selection alone, I’ll be back in a month or so. Hopefully they’ll have worked out some of the kinks (brunch, service, parking validation) because I LOVE the selection and would really like this to become my go-to Rockville joint“

“Located amid a bland industrial block near the DC Metro Twinbrook Station, 7 Locks has been around for a few years as part of the brewery renaissance occurring in Montgomery County, once an infamous "beer wasteland. The tasting room is a very large one; to the rear, are the gleaming brew tanks; around the room are several communal tables, upholstered furniture that appears to have come from Goodwill, and in the center is the bar area. The crowd is friendly and lively. If you wish, there are games to be played - including a giant Jengo game. There are food trucks on weekends. They have about ten of their own beers on tap, including about two or three IPAs, including the tasty Devils' Alley. Enjoyable place. Glad to see MoCo joining the beer world.“

“Nice sandwich shop, bar, beer store. Service is nothing more than someone ringing you up (if you're just buying beer). Sandwiches are good - and it smells very nice in there (tough to leave without ordering food). A good amount of singles: 3-4 shelves? Some interesting things in there, too. However, prices are definitely on the high side... but it's a decent spot if you're not from the area and want a bunch of ticks. EDITING TO ADD: The sandwich I had was outstanding. Also, lots of bombers and coolers in the back that I've ignore don my other visits.“

“Clean, new microbrewery at a nice industrial park in Rockville near the Fedex place. Had only been open six weeks when I arrived. Open place, kid and dog friendly. Typical bar and tables set up, with a couple sitting areas. Everything speaks to a well set up and well planned production micro getting itself off the ground. Service was friendly and prompt. Food truck outside, and there's a bbq place right across Gude Drive. Eight rotating taps of their stuff, all of which was either very good or downright excellent. UPDATE: Now up to 14 taps, and the quality continues to range from solid to outstanding. Only one miss for me out of about 30 beers tried. Usually a new brewery will have some uneven offerings, but not this place. Good prices too. Will continue visiting for sure.“

“A pleasant bar and restaurant at the Hilton Hotel and Conference Center in Rockville. Eight local beers on tap (7 from MD and one from DC when I visited), available in flights of four (5 oz. pours) for ten bucks. One of the bartenders seemed to know his beers, the other could not have cared less. The bottle list has a bunch of macros but also 7 or 8 craft beers, including two Belgians. Not a beer destination, but if you happen to be in the neighborhood, it is worth checking out their draft selection.“

“WOB is a chain, one of several in the DC area, that provides an impressive array of drafts along with a sports bar atmosphere. Still, I enjoy coming here (in the quieter hours) for the selection of local brews. They also have an extensive bottle listing - some may be pricy. The food menu is pretty good. They are around the corner from Gordon Biersch in the Rockville Town Center venue.“

“Found this place on the beer map, which was only 3 miles away from my friend’s house where I went for Thanksgiving. He’d never heard of it. So, my friend, his wife (who is also a friend), and I stepped into this place in early afternoon and it was packed. Lots of families at tables - plenty of kids running around. Service was friendly, but not in-your-face... they didn’t really explain anything, but there were sheets on the bar that told you all about their beers. 10 beers on tap, plus a guest cider (which was delicious), and a rootbeer (also good, and I’m not a huge rootbeer person). Two beers were barrel aged, both delicious. In fgact, all of their beers were at the very worst slightly above average, and at best quite fucking good. My friend’s wife, who’s not a beer drinker, was quite impressed - as was my friend. I’m actually quite jealous - this beats any of the breweries in the Charlottesville city limits with flavor and quality. Ambiance - it’s a warehouse, giant garage. The bar itself is nice, but not much else to look at. I look forward to visiting this place every time I’m in Silver Spring.“

“Small bottle shop but a worthwhile stop. Shopkeeper was friendly and helpful. Kinda tricky to find on foot but I managed. Lots of singles and a lot of six pack selections. A few bombers. “Located close to my hotel. I wasn’t hungry so I didn’t eat, but the place smelled excellent. Kind of a modern vibe with some Japanese touches. Stopped by for a beer, but, the tap selection was lackluster. Common national micros and some locals, but they picked all core beers and didn’t even bother with any seasonals. Staff was passive.“

“Very cool little place here. Was just walking to the metro from 7 Locks and stumbled upon what I thought from the outside was a beer store. It is and more! Great pub/store vibe in here. “Standard brewery atmosphere for D.C. area - a garage with lots of large-format seating and some bean bag toss games. “Warehouse brewing facility, looks like a seven barrel system or so. Medium sized bar in the front of the brewery with a handful of tables. Lots of kids and infants for some reason - apparently the good people of Maryland cannot afford babysitters. Beers are available in flights of five, and there were seven on offer. Staff were generous with samples of the others. Quality varied, seems like the beers need work. Although there were barrels here and there, I hope they improve their beers before trying any barrel aging. No food. Worth a stop if you’re nearby.“

“I profoundly apologize for adding this place. My tax person, who is from Poland, told me that you could find interesting Polish beers gere, not just Zywiec. Turns out there was none to be had. Very little craft at all, just a few cases of Dogfish head and other stuff. A bit disorganized. Not sure if she meant the Kielbasa place upstairs, but that had only Zywiec, although they do have tasty meats and delicious homemade pierogies every Friday. Anyway, mea culpa.“

“Ouch, some hard reviews on this one. Sunday was really quiet here - the bar was totally full when I arrived at around 1:30 and cleared out a little bit later. Staff was very nice - wife and husband were working the taps and talking a lot to the people who were there. Very friendly.

None of the beers were bad, which is better than I can say about other new breweries I’ve happened to go to over the last year or so. Nothing stands out at the moment (which isn’t really a problem), though their IPA series might be interesting to check out. They’re the only brewery (as opposed to brewpubs) in the area worth going to at the moment.“

ambiance: small shop on the back and bottom side of the shopping center on Rockville Pike where Tower Records used to be. Very small space, but extremely well-organized. Clean, awesome use of space. service: phenomenal. Sven, the owner, is a genuinely nice guy who goes above and beyond in all aspects. Literally chased me down in the parking lot to hand me something I forgot. selection: for the space, excellent. A whole wall of coolers, including a few make your own 6-pack coolers, and he will also let you break most of the other 6-packs if they are under $10.99. Not going to find any real rarities here (not yet, anyway), but they have all the good craft stuff you’d look for. food: N/A; just some small snacks. value: for the DMV, awesome. Build your own 6-pack for $10.99, plus break any other 6-pack to include if it’s also $10.99 or less. overall: A charming hole in the wall with a decent selection, outstanding prices, and the best service I’ve ever had in a Maryland beer store. “Large open space with small bar and lots of tables. Was pretty packed on a Saturday early evening. Lots of kids running around, yelling and carrying on, which was LOUD due to the open space. Fine if you are there with your own kids, but man, it got annoying. The beer, well, nothing to write home about. They have not dialed it in. Service was sub-par. “Visited with DCLawyer on a brewery trip around Northern VA, MD, and DC. Spacious but generic looking brewery and tap room. Lots of small children running around and screaming on a Saturday evening, not helping my rating score. 7 drafts available in flights of 5, pints, and growlers to go. No individual taster pours unfortunately. Flights for $8, pints for $6. No food but they have free popcorn by the entrance and you can BYO food. Beers were average with one or two solid offerings, nothing really stood out for me. Wouldn’t go out of my way unless you’re already in Rockville with time to kill.“

ambiance: you can tell this place opened recently. It’s spacious and clean, but doesn’t have a ton of character yet. About a dozen tables of various construction, and the bar itself is pretty nice; a slab of well-finished natural wood. One or two TVs, music that’s not too loud, but the echoing space means if it’s full it’s a little on the louder side overall--not oppressively so. service: fine. Everyone seemed nice enough, although the bar staff didn’t make too much of an effort to engage those of us on the rail. No one was rude, but no one was exactly talkative either. Given this place just opened, I perhaps expected a little more interaction. selection: Six house beers on draft, plus two of the six had nitro versions. Plus a guest tap with craft root beer. food: N/A. There’s a food truck on Fridays apparently, and a popcorn maker in the corner. value: A flight of six, plus a full pint and a souvenir glass ran $19 plus tip. That’s a great value in my experience. overall: Super stoked for this new brewery in Rockville. Overall the place is nice and the people seem decent, and the beers were good to solid. Only one of the six wasn’t at least respectable.“

“Dammit. I stopped here looking for something to take to the hotel for a nightcap. I was not expecting a lot based on reviews, but the store itself is very Whole Foods like, and the beer selection at WF is generally decent. I finally found the tiny little area devoted to beers (almost all in coolers), and wow was I disappointed. Mainly just "shelf craft" six packs and a few ultra common bombers lying around. Weird use of fridge space too with a bunch of dark beers in the fridge and Sculpin sitting out on the one tiny part that was not refrigerated. They also had 5 taps of common local craft in the food service part of the store. Meh and double Meh.“

“I Always rate places relative to the local beer scene. Gillys is IT. Very local place but welcoming to the outsider. Both consecutive nights I was there it was clear that all others were local and known by the bar staff. This did not stop one bar tender from answering one of my beer questions by getting a bottle and pouring me a sample. Sure, they all do this from the tap but how many open bottles? Great service the following night when the bar keep happily broke a sixer to allow me to take a local back to the hotel. I'll be back for sure“

Ambiance: Small place in a small strip mall in Rockville, corner of Norbeck and Georgia. Inside is full of nice touches: small bar with a concrete top and mini-rock garden; decor is wood/iron; semi-open kitchen. Service: Five total visits, both at tables and at the bar, never had bad service, frequently had very good service. Selection: Only four taps, but they are well-curated, balanced between a Pale Ale, IPA, Wit, and Stout. Bottle list is equally balanced. With the exception of Brooklyn Brown, everything (tap or bottle list) is from MD, DC, NJ, DE, VA, or PA--nicely local. No real rarities, but all good beers. Plenty of Dogfish Head, Flying Dog, Union, etc. You can tell someone put a lot of time and effort into curating the beers. Food: The fare is focused on sandwiches (couple of salads, soups apparently coming in winter). All of the sandwiches I’ve tried to date have been great. Everything is higher end, as far as the meats & cheeses, bread is brought in fresh from a DC bakery every day, etc. The Ham ’n’ Egger, Hawaiian Grilled Cheese, Roast Beef and Cheddar, and Roast Beef and Horseradish are all standouts. They also have a grilled cheese with crab cake and a number of other tempting sandwiches on the menu. All are served with excellent house made potato chips. So it’s not a huge menu, but everything on it is good. Value: Average for the area. Sandwiches are about $9 (which is reasonable, given the quality), beers are around $7. Overall: A great little place. They are focused on two things (sandwiches and craft beer) and doing them very well. It’s a new place as of the date of this rating, but it seems to be doing well. Highly recommended.“

AMBIANCE: Low-key family style restaurant with bare bones tables and chairs in the dining room, and a medium sized sports bar area to the side. SERVICE: Varies. Bar service is usually outstanding. Dining service can be a mixed bag. This place does a great job of hiring local teens, which is a really good thing for the community. The minor down side is that sometimes you get inconsistent service. Everyone is pretty friendly. SELECTION: They recently added a couple of new tap lines, and also a handful of new bottles. Unfortunately, the vast majority of the offerings are one form of lager or another. There is one IPA and one hefeweizen (both Widmer Brothers, so that’s good), but an awful lot of Shock Top/Bud Light, etc. They used to offer Brooklyn Brown and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in bottles, but these have disappeared in favor of PBR and Natty Boh, probably around the time the tap lines expanded. This place could use a little beer upgrading; perhaps they could call Kloby’s Smoke House in Columbia, MD for advice. FOOD: One of my absolute favorite local joints for when I want delicious barbecue with no caloric consideration at all. The soul rolls (egg rolls stuffed with pulled beef, cheese, jalapenos etc) are excellent, as is the other gutbusting fare (frito pie, smothered corn dogs, excellent burgers and ribs). VALUE: Darn good. Prices are lower than you’d expect in this area, especially given the good to excellent quality of the food. OVERALL: Come for the food, and enjoy the fact you have slightly more to choose from than Bud and Bud Light. Here’s hoping they open up the draft and bottle selections a little better.“

Place Rating #222, nice!
This is one heck of an improvement over the PGA Tour Grill (and the rest of the mediocre options that have held this space in the past). I’ve heard of Matchbox before, but haven’t visited the DC location. As for this location, it does for me exactly what I would hope. I wish this place and more places like it had existed when I lived in the area, as Rockville really really really really needs more places that offer good food and a decent draft list. The outdoor area is great, and the way they re-did this space as a whole is really impressive.

In other locations, this place would only be okay, but here, it gets a good amount of extra credit.“

“Funny to see hipster za in the non-hipster burbs. This place is massive, with not one but two outdoor fireplace tables. “A much larger, but still very crowded incarnation of the Chinatown sensation. Loads of parking, huge outdoor patio seating with area heaters. Very trendy, popular upscale pizza place with about 1/2 pizzas on the menu and another 1/2 with stuff like rib eye, duck, etc. Pizzas are around $14 for individual, $21 for larges if you want to split. Ambiance is fireside relaxed, large open spaces, a bit awkward in the table arrangements with massive circular tables, tables inset into the wall opening up on either side (??), crowded, semi-fancy sports bar. Live Jazz on Sundays! Prices are not too bad. Pizzas were delicious. Tap list is small, like 10 taps or so with one seasonal and one rotational. Sierra Nevada, Flying Dog, He’Brew, Dogfish Head, Ommegang. Decent stuff, nothing on tap here that you wouldn’t easily find anywhere else in the DC area save for the He’Brew Hop Manna. Service was kind and very attentive. Food came out very quickly. The server knew a little about beer, but both their "seasonal" and their "rotating tap" were non existant the day I was there. “One of the few places to grab craft beer in the Rockville area, behind the main drag on Rockville Pike. This is very close to the Twinbrook metro stop. Next door to Urban BBQ. Place is pretty cramped, lots of beers on high shelves throughout the store. A good amount of beer in fridges. Decent Belgian selection with Scottish, English beers. Can find some interesting stuff here. Only problem is the price level here, which is out of this world. Completely off the wall, 70-100% higher prices than normal. Laughable. Will never need to come back. If you are buying beer here, you are getting ripped off.“

“The beer section is pretty disorganized, with one set of shelves for singles, then the rest in coolers, or just in cases scattered around the floor or stacked up. Good selection of Heavy Seas, a Brux for $15, and not much else to right home about. Only worth stopping if you’re passing by, and even then the traffic makes it a bit difficult.“

“Not impressed. Saw one beer that I had not seen anywhere else. Tight space and staff are hovering at all times. You can find a decent craft beer here but nothing obscure. Did not notice how prices compared. Bought nothing.“

“Stopped in while in Rockville for other reasons. Ambiance is pretty good, part small deli with good food, part bar with taps, part bottle shop. Selection was above average. Prices are INSANEly high for the most part. Some domestic things line Weyerbacher seemed in line or within a buck or two of my typical price. But, and I hope this was worse case scenario, Allagash Four 750ml - $27.49. Are you serious? I pay about $18-19 a bottle FULL RETAIL, and as little as $15-16 per bottle when buying a 6-bottle case (under $100). So congrats, I didn't buy much if anything. Had something to eat, drank a beer on tap, bought a mix six pack. Unlikely to shop here much but may stop in from time to time for a bite as it's across from Guitar Center.“
