“I love ABC and the new building now that they have combined with Hangar. I do miss the small bar across the street, doesnt have the same homey feel but does the trick. beer is always fresh, bartenders are knowledgable and the game is always on.“

“I am partial to the location for I am related to the previous owner when it was the Olde Amherst ale house. The beer selection and list was great, the staff is knowledgable and just a nice quiet place to have a few.“

“Best beer selection in the Northampton/Amherst area. Yeah, it’s dusty and staffed by clones inured to serving the needs of troglodytic UMass students, but it is all about the craft and import selection, which is very good.“

“I swung by on a early tuesday afternoon. Sat at the bar downstairs, shaped like a backwards letter J. Celler was a Brick darkwood, tile motif. You can see the brewing equipment around you. Clean and comfortable. Service was good, but it wasn’t like it was particlulary busy either. I got to chat with the brewer, Mike. He gave me the nickle history of both the brewpub and his background. They had the Pilsner, Pale ale, Ipa, Esb, Brown, Impy Stout, Scotch, Raspberry brown, and a Lager on while I was there. Had a burger with cheddar and jalepenoes and fries, Burger was good, fries were very tasty. I thought it seemed like a great little place. I wish it were closer. Update 05/27/2015 oy new location blows imo, big sports bar vibe no charm. Hate it, beer is fine, didn’t have food, not a place for me.“

“Stopped here on my way back from Vermont. The place itself is on the large side, decorated with some nice breweriana, complete with a huge bar. Service is on the pretentious side. Beers are decent. Didn’t order any food.“

“I liked the Moan and Dove. It’s small, cosy and quite basic - made more so as we were there during a power outage and it was lit only by candles. The selection of draught beers was impressive, as was the bottle list. (Visited 29 October 2012).“

“A very large brewpub in a small shopping mall. The bar runs almost the full length of the room, which is huge and accommodates several pool tables. We were here the day that Hurricane Sandy hit the coast and there was a great community spirit when the power went off leaving only one television screen and an eerie vodka display with the lights on. They had five regular beers and five seasonals. We were able to try most of them (well, Chris was - I was driving), despite having difficulty paying as the cash registers and card readers all rely on electricity too. (Visited 29 October 2012).“

“Stopped by here while my girlfriend was studying in New Hampshire. Food was pretty good, service was good, and the beer quality was good. I enjoyed this place a fair amount and would definitely visit again.

“On the outskirts of Amherst, the Spirit Haus is a red shack-like building with a very good selection of beers. There are several aisles plus old fashioned glass fronted cabinets alongside the walk-in cold store. It was doing a roaring trade at 1230 on the day that Hurricane Sandy was due to hit the coast, with people stocking up on supplies. (Visited 29 October 2012).“

“I did deliberate as to write this review (or non review as it happens) but decided to in the event that anyone else from England decided to pop by without a passport !!! We called by on a Saturday night around 8pm and the place was deserted (hence my low ambiance rating). I went to the bar to order with my friend and was ID’d. For the first time ever on a trip to the states I didnt have my passport on me (ok - my mistake I realise ... ), but did have my UK picture driving licence which clearly displays my date of birth. Now lets put things in perspective, I’m in my mid 30’s and look mid 30’s! The girl behind the bar refused to accept my UK pitcure driving licence as valid ID (It’s a plastic card with hologram etc and actually looks a lot more secure and un-fakable than my friends MASS state driving licence which a budding teenage fraudster could master) I asked her straight out, do i not look 30+? yes she replied you do, but its company policy to ask everyone for ID. Ok - I get that ’jobsworth hat etc’, however I had visited the sister pub, the Dirty Truth the previous evening and was NOT asked for ID !!! No surprise there were only 3 or 4 other people in there !!! Wasted 20 minutes of our time seeking this bar out and headed straight back to the people’s pint! “

“This is place with a long history and was when I first started checking beeradvocate was the #1 place on their list. The owner that made it into a beer place then went on to Lord Hobo in Cambridge (RIP the B Sides) and Alewife Queens. This is a classic American beer bar. It looks and smells it. The tap list is solid as is the bottle list. Neither are mind blowing but they dont’ need to be for this place to be well worth a visit. Prices are a little high.“

“It has an almost ski lodge meets dive liquor store vibe which is kinda cool. The beer selection is by most any standard large. It’s a bit random but they have some pretty rare stuff by NYC standards from CA and MA. The prices are good and they have sales on old or out of season bottles. Some Port Brewing IPA bottles with dates I checked were more than 6 months old. The service was non-existent until I was checking out. If this visit was an indication there are definitely gems to be had and a plenty big selection to satisfy most anyone.“

“Great spot! Was able to bring my dog in and eat peanuts and drink fantastic beer all afternoon long. The selection is very thoughtful and has some nice gems on the list, even if they are expensive. I was perfectly happy hitting the Victory Braumeister Pils and the Maine Beer Mo. Good glassware, good bartender, good crowd. Just the right kind of list selection. This place does a good job to craft beer.“

“It definitely feels like the place has been there for decades. Located just off the main drag in Downtown Amherst, this place has a decent sized beer selection in the back of the store. Yes this place sells a lot of BMC and paint thinner liquor on a Friday night, but they also have a lot of craft beer at extremely reasonable prices. And, other than finding last years Vertical Epic they seemed to move product quickly. And I found the service incredibly nice and helpful as well.“

“Large place located in a shopping center. The bar area is massive as is the bar itself. I went on a Friday and was impressed by how many people they had behind the bar. They had 11 of their beers on tap 1 on cask plus 10 guest taps. The beers ranged from bland to sold with nothing either outstanding or terrible. the food was very flavorful and everything was very reaonably priced especially after spending a couple of days in Boston.“

“Place is a bit of a dump especially inside of the ancient "refrigerator". They have a lot of BMC though they seemed to be pushing the Sierra Nevada tonight. Lots of college kids looking for something for the weekend and not wanting to spend more than 12 seconds looking. They miss a large craft selection of local regional national and international craft. Hiding by the missing beers in six-pack holders they also sell singles. My big caveat with this place, besides all of the college kids looking for four Loko, is that a number of selections looked well past the sell by date with a few coated in dust.“

“Has sort of a Greenwich Village dive bar feel with its concrete floor, worn wooden furniture, and blood red walls decorated by photos of the interiors of refrigerators. It’s a small space so it gets loud very quickly. They have 20+ taps of local and national craft with a couple of Belgian and German selections. The extensive bottle list includes a number of Belgians including Fantome and 5 Cantillons at big bucks. The prices are reasonable and there’s plenty of parking next door. I’d say it’s a great local and an OK destination.“

“Oh...Russell’s. I’m pretty sure this is the first place I legally bought beer and liquor in the united states. Great little mom and pop new england packie. wide selection of craft beers in 6 packs, bombers, and 750’s. i can remember exactly what it looks and smells like. Pretty sure others bought me some beer here when I was underage as well.“

“Wonderful, three-story informal Italian restaurant with drafts from Berkshire Brewing Co, Harpoon, Sierra Nevada, and others - for an Italian restaurant, with seeminly more choices of beers than wines, it is a terrific local restaurant in Amherst town center. Food is excellent, with large servings; service is enthusiastic and friendly rather than polished. I’ll make the trip from Boston again next summer just to eat there again.“

“I was pleasantly surprised by what I found at Spirit Haus. Well-organized store by brewer and import/domestic distinction. I like that they will break up six packs and sell singles. Service is decent - the employees won’t go out of their way to help someone without the customer asking for it, but are glad to help when asked. Perhaps this was because the store was packed on my Saturday visit. Prices aren’t too awful, and selection is the best in the Amherst/Hadley area. Decent import selection. I probably won’t be going back as this place takes a while to get to after meandering through college-town Amherst with people walking everywhere and traffic is a nightmare for such a small town.“

“Upstairs was closed when I popped in recently, but the downstairs consists of a large but dark interior space. Lots of smallish rooms, each with their own feel... kind of like a British pub. Pretty reasonable prices, although the sliders I had were pretty crappy. The beers are decent, if not outstanding. The staff were very friendly and quite attentive. Kind of a typical brewpub lineup, but most are well-made. Their IPA and ESB were the best of the lineup. Worth checking out if you’re in the area.“

“We really enjoy Amherst Brewing Company. The atmosphere is comfortable and social. We always sit at the bar and appreciate that it is set up so that you are sitting directly across from other patrons. This arrangement has led to many great conversations with other beer enthusiasts. They recently added an addition to the existing dining room and have a second floor lounge and game room. The quality and consistency of the brews is top notch. We make a point to try all of their specialty brews which allow brewmaster Mike Yates to show his creative side. We recently enjoyed the Amherst Gold 250 an Imperial IPA and the Super Stout (an Oatmeal Stout) on cask. The service is consistently friendly and the selection is great with about 8-10 beers on draft, one on cask and a lager of some variety. The food is quite good, and consists of mainly traditional pub fare. Including soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers and a pretty nice vegetarian menu. Check out our most recent experience and interview with“

“beer tour, 09/22/08. stopped by in the late morning and were seated pretty quickly. Waitress took order, sampler for myself, icd tea for wife. We also ordered food, bean and chicken soup for Kadie, Irish stew for myself. Beers arrived after a bit, and I thought they all had a very odd tase to them. It was as if the sample glasses had been washed and inadequately rinsed, a very odd taste. The food on the other hand, was excellent, both my stew and my wife’s soup were well prepared, hot, and served in a decent portion size. If my experience concerning the beer is not typical, well sorry, they were bad. The food was definitely worth the trip and I reccomend stopping by for that.“

“A nicely laid out store, that is clearly featuring the vast quantity of beers they have available. The service seemed ok, I didn’t have much interaction with them. The selection was probably the best I have ever seen in terms of beer. There were all the usual suspects, local beers and growlers, and a huge, and well-organized supply of beers from around the country and world. The prices were pretty good too. A top-of-the-line beer store! I probably could have spent a couple hours there, but sadly, we didn’t have very long.“
