“UPDATE 5/28/23: Stopped by again today for ticks. The BYO section is odd. It's all bottled beers, which is bizarre in 2023. I didn't get any BYO beers but they do have a good local mead and cider selection. Still worth a stop. 6/20/20: Charming little downtown grocery store. Good beer selection. Less common stuff, good representation of local breweries. BYO six pack section for $10.50. Lots of locals there too. Prices reasonable. Cute selection of groceries too. Good Covid sanitation practices. No employees in beer section but cashier was friendly. Kinda cramped. Overall, worth stopping by if you're in town.“

“Beautiful place with a lot of dark wood character...and beautiful brewing equipment. Food looked very good...this place is more upscale then nearby Keweenaw. Beers again (compared to KBC)...pretty basic styles and results. If eating here...they will compliment your food well (IPA, copper, stout, brown)...but craftbeer fans will find the execution lacking. Visit if passing thru...but we ate at the local seafood place...then drank craftbeer back at the hotel...from our cooler...that we'd brought from home...or picked up along our travels.“

“Very nice place with great décor and a comfortable feeling. The food looked good here but we ate at a local seafood place as that what we were looking for...this is a bit more bar food. The problem here is that the beer is pretty standard and non descript at best (head to Copper Harbor and Brickside for some really good and local craftbeer). Having said that...they had a decent IPA and pale ale (but nothing to write home about...more to wash down a burger or wings). Stop if in town...but don't make a special trip.“

“A large, open bar area with table seating nearby. The beers were good and food complimented the beers well. We enjoyed efficient service. A nice area of this small town, though the ongoing construction detract from the overall experience.“

“Used to hang out here with my buddy who lives in the Houghton area. Many good times in the Western part of the UP of Michigan, oh boy, but anyways, this brewpub was full of good times. Beers aren’t spectacular but when you’re hanging out doing the "redneck" stuff we used to do, no one cared. We liked it more than the cheap BMC stuff that was way too easy to get all around the area.“

“Located around the corner from Library. Large downtown brewery vibe. No sign of food. 2 sides, larger bar on the left, smaller bar on the right was not open when I visited. Brewery is visible on the right side. Full of regulars near opening 3PM on a weekday. Flights of 5 amply sized samples for $4.50. Beer is decently executed, but definitely aimed at an entry level drinker and all were uninspiring. Chalkboard only listed ABV for one beer. Bartenders were fine. Worth a stop if you’re already in Houghton.“

“Located in downtown Houghton, right around the corner from Keweenaw. Moderate sized place, books everywhere, exposed brick. Large bar. Comfortable. Did not try the food. 8 house beers on tap. All drinkable, approachable. A few flaws here and there, generally average in quality. Cheap, $1 per sample is standard up here. Bartender was friendly. Parking was easy. No reason to go out of your way, but worth it if you’re in Houghton.“

“Reviewed from notes. Several times spent here after work trips from Sault Ste. Marie from where I lived at that time in my life. This nice looking bar and restaurant was well kept and had a good selection of beers. NY Strip Steak was phenomenal. Prices were a bit more than I expected, but I was told Michigan Tech professors would hang out here. Between the cleanliness, selection, food and service, it makes you want to go back.“

“Tasty food and pretty okay beer. We had some difficulties in communicating with the waiter but at the end we got what we wanted. 11 beers on tap. Flights available, as many beers as you want, $1 each (4oz).“

“Quite cozy and big brewpub on the main (Shelden) street in Houghton. 9 beers on tap. Flight of 5 available. Their beers were quite mediocre. No food available.“

“Great food and decent beer brewed on site. A combination not readily found elsewhere in the region. Nice view of the portage channel. Comfortable setting. Easy to miss on the backside of a building on the main downtown, business strip.“

“Small friendly place on main drag. Cozy wood, industrial interior. Shame their beer isn’t better.“

“For the area, a good combo of food and local brew. Some pretty decent brews, menu a bit pricy. Some seats have scenic view of the river.“

“The pub in downtown Houghton had a nice ambiance with rustic and finished wood everywhere inside and some old collectibles (i.e. Bosch 8-pack) in the street displays. One of the two main rooms had a lounge with a gas fireplay. The at-the-bar service was friendly enough but you were pretty much on your own after that. The prices seemed pretty decent - $2 for a pint and $4 for a fiver taste sampler. Overall, a nice experience, and I would recommend stopping in if you find yourself in the area.“

“The beer is why you come. They have some solid brown ales, and their IPA’s are always pretty tasty.“

“Stopped in on my way to Isle Royale. I enjoyed this place. The bar half of the building is very nice, old brick and metal work. The restaurant half is incredibly boring, but it does have a nice view. They were really busy when I got there (lucky to get a spot at the bar), but they handled it pretty well. The beer list was 7 of their own and a few from the Keweenaw brewery.“

“I was looking forward to this on my way up to Isle Royale, but I was highly disappointed. The beer list was 8 of their own brews, of which I really only enjoyed 1--their IPA. Service was mediocre and it was not a place I wanted to hang out in.“

“Nice restaurant with a coffee house type atmosphere. Had the Redbrick Rye Ale, a little overly malty for my taste, but still quite good. BBQ tuesday nights, great souhern style food, grits, collards and Tennessee style smoked meats, slightly suprising for a place in the UP“

“I can’t really put my finger on why, but this is one of the most comfortable brewpubs I’ve ever been in (I’ve been in dozens). Very good beers (still two bucks a pint at this writing), nice deck and couch seating area with a fireplace. Good service. Popular place even in the summer when school’s out. And when you leave, take some to go – in cans. Yep, you heard me, cans. http://www.keweenawbrewing.com/ “

“Nice large brewpub with a library them, though it’s pretty minimal; nice view of the river and hills across it, comfortable seating and bar area. Yes, more of restaurant as noted, somewhat on the pricey side for a small midwest college town but the food and service were both pretty good. Beer? Iffy, though most were quite drinkable; certainly much better than Keeweenaw around the corner. The dry stout was easily the star.“

“Really cool-looking place, if you like the bare-bones old timey saloon look (I do), and really cheap prices and efficient service from the bartender....alas the beer just wasn’t very good. Hefe and stout were all right but the rest dull and a couple had slight diacetyl issues. Not really recommended, but it is just a block from The Library, so you might as well hit both....“

“Great beers and great food make this place well worth the stop. Its really more of a restaurant than a bar, but it gives it a nice classy feel. The everyday lineup of beers are quite good, and sometimes a seasonal pops up thats a pleasant surprise. The Shafthouse Dry Stout is in their everyday rotation and is a must try.“

“What a great atmosphere and preservation of some of the old historic buildings from the Keweenaw’s mining area. A perfectly kept and designed business with the local community in mind - check it out if you would like to get some of the Copper Country’s local flavor. The general rotation of brews are pretty good as well, and sometimes some tasty seasonals are available. How can you possibly go wrong? Good beer, good company, good service, good ambiance, and $2 a pint?!? No wonder its a favorite of local college students.“

“Compared to the other Keweenaw brewpubs this is by far my least favorite and seemed skewed to the frat-boy crowd, $1 for a bag-o-nuts, with the shells left on the floor. $2/pint and growlers going for $6/$3. Found the beers to be kind of boring as I did the place itself.“

“Wow what a place. Classy. Nice themed brewpub for a college town place. Lots of books for decor, obviously, a plasma TV and big band jazz over speakers. Good varied menu, from nachos to Sushi tuna ( although I dont get why they have tuna flown in from Hawaii when you are right on lake superior seems kind of strange, variety for the locals I guess) and varied pricing, the Best Western has this listed as "fine dining". But this is about the beer and they are excellent as are the prices. $3 for a 4-sampler, $2/pint, $8.95/growler, and $4.95/refill, outstanding. A little more expensive than the nearby Keweenaw brewpub but worth it.“

“Definitely a great place to come for locally brewed beer (the best in the area). Their bottled selection is just so-so, but the quality of what’s on tap, as well as the food, more than makes up for that. I highly recommend stopping in to get a quick read of the place (sorry, I could resist the pun) if you’re in the area.“

“Wow. This needed an update. I love the Library, but sometimes they can be all over the map in terms of quality. Fortunately, the beer is usually in good shape. The food can range from solid, good-value bar food, to poorly done haute cuisine thats outrageously expensive. A good selection of malt forward beer styles, german and english, at decent prices. A good view and good atmosphere.“

“A very cozy and rustic bar, with the whole brewing operation visible. Always bustling with college students and friendly locals. They’ve recently expanded to a non-smoking side and a smoking side, with with a very comfortable couch and fireplace arrangement in the back of the non-smoking side. You are allowed to bring in your own food. The pint prices have gone up to $2.50 (still a deal). They have also added a back deck, which is great for summertime. Also, they’ve moved the brewing of their main line to an off-site brewing operation, so they spend more time with seasonals and specials.“
