“Visit date: 10/13/18 The brew house at the CIA is kind of an upscale gastropub type of place. A bunch of the CIA beers are available on tap as well some pretty good bar food.“

“Nobody has rated this place in a while, but it is still going strong. It is what it appears to be, a nice local joint with some solid brews on draft. They couldn't fill my growler for some silly reason - because they only did half gallons? Service was friendly and relaxed. There were around 6 brews on tap when I visited, covering a range of styles - all of them solid, but nothing to make a special trip for.“

“So there is a brewery / classroom / beer lab on the campus of the CIA (which stands for Culinary Institute of America, and is a top school in the cooking and hospitality field). It is located at this dining hall / commons area called the Egg, but the beers are also available at other restaurants and bars at the school, most of which are located in the main building. The Egg is down the hill, closer to the river. They had 4 different things on tap when I visited, and you can pick up crowlers, althou the prices seemed a little high to me since these are in part at least student efforts. The beers are solid, and they do some creative styles. I am not sure in what way Brooklyn Brewery is involved in this, but their name is on it as well. It is worth checking out.“

“Slightly different take on a small brewery. This lovely brewery was the result of a collaboration between The CIA and Brooklyn Brewery. Small (7bbl I believe) system located in the recently redesigned student commons and dining hall The Egg which acts as a classroom brewery making some class project beers and a couple standards. The beers are available on tap for an incredibly low $4 a pint, with no tipping allowed (credit card only, don’t bring cash). The tap system has four on most of the time, usually 2 standards (a wit and an IPA), and one or two more recent projects. There have been some neat collaborations as well, and sometimes there will be another local brewery on one of the taps. You can grab food from the student dining area, which is also card only, and very well priced. Expect to see a good amount of students at peak hours, often in their chef outfits. The beers are available at a number of the on campus restaurants, and sometimes show up at festivals, but those are really the only places you’ll find them. If you’re in the neighborhood it’s worth the stop for a quick beer.“

“Visited: 1-18-12 A: The building has a more upscale brewpub feel, comfortable but not a dump. The bar area seats about 30 along the bar and is surrounded by another 10 tables around it. Q: I had three beers while here and one was decent, one was mediocre, and one was just bad. The mediocre beer was an okatoberfest...in january. S: The service was average, the barmaid was mildly attentive but fumbled my order several times throughout the night. S: They had six in house taps, no outside taps while I was there. They had a blonde, pilsner, Marzen, Red IPA, Porter, and Lager. Not a great mix with 3 light colored beers. F: I ordered the 96 degrees burger which was perfectly cooked and tasted god with an average side order of pottato salad. V: A pint of their normal rotation beers was 5.50, which I dont mind paying for a good in house beer..but their in houses were nothing special. Their ’one off’ beers were 6 bucks each. Overall, an average brewpub with slightly subpar beers and if you are in the area, might be worth stopping into, but only if in the area, dont seek out.“

“How has this place not been rated already? This brewpub is located across the street from FDR’s homestead and just down the road from the Vanderbilt Estate on RT 9 near the Hudson River. My wife and I had dinner there this evening after a day at these places. The menu is varied with a lot of choices. The food is solid and there is both pub fare and entrees. The place itself is a bar with 2 back restaurant rooms and a seasonal patio. The beers are typical of brewpub beers. Definitely a solid stop if in the area.“

“I stopped in on my way home from a recent business trip Upstate. The bar area is larger than the dining area, so I imagine they must get a good crowd in the evenings. I was there for lunch and the dining room was a little tight while there were two or three people sitting in the bar area, which I thought was poor use of space at that time. The service was attentive. They apparently have a regular lineup of five beers plus one dark beer that rotates and one seasonal. The food was very good and was hot when it arrived to the table. I can see myself stopping in from time to time when I am traveling along the Thruway.“

“Located across the street from Hyde Park and just down the road from the Culinary Institute of America. The building is not much to speak. The bar area features a very long bar area. They had 6 things on tap none of which knocked my socks off. The hamburger was moist and flavorful. What does impress you about this place is that despite being located on the side of the road it definitely has a neighborhood pub feel. I don’t know if I’d come back for the beer but I might for the food.“

“I visited this place yesterday, and I thought it was a pretty nice Brewpub. I actually enjoyed all of my food quite a bit (more so then the beer sadly). Anyway, they had 6 things on tap, including a couple that were at the very least interesting. Our service was rather good as well. The outside of the place was under a major renovation, and we almost didn’t go because it really looked closed, but it was nice enough inside. Worth visiting if you are in the area for sure and you didn’t make a reservation/don’t feel like paying for one of the CIA restaurants.“

“Good bar/pub. Can get cramped very easily on bar side. But very lively atmosphere, with entertainment each week. Restaurant side is very nice. Food is good. A locals spot, which I like.“

“The Chaos Dry Stoudt and the Rough Rider Red Lager alone, are worth stopping for. Kind of pricey on the food menu. I had the baby Spinach and the chili. Both were very good. The staff are friendly and attentive. The location is very convenient on US Rout 9, less than 100 Yards from the FDR home and Library. All 4 of us in my party enjoyed their food. The portions are large. “

“one of the best local brewpubs in the Hudson Valley. The beers are incomprable for what they offer. The Barrel 9 changes every two weeks which is good for selection“

“The quality seems to have dropped off a little bit since the place opened, and I think they may have changed ownership along the way, which could explain that. The dinner menu way back when used to change a bit, and was (as best I recall) done by CIA folks. It’s been moving towards more of the typical brewpub offerings, though there are still some interesting menu items. The bar fare is rather standard, though they do make a nice pretzel. I’m rather fond of the pizza and a pitcher thing on Tuesdays, which is quite a good value. Crowds seem very erratic there, as if there is some secret schedule I’m not aware of, as I’ll go at the same time and day different weeks, and one day it’s packed, others, dead as a Huck Finn’s cat. Bar service is often hit or miss, and very dependent on who your bartender happens to be. Sometimes you get someone very attentive, others you’re waiting and waiting for whomever it is to get off their bar stool and stop eating their dinner, and get back behind the bar. “

“It lopoks like my kind of bar when you first enter. The wait staff is usally friendly but the bartenders don’t always know the beer well that they are serving. Most of the beer themselves are not my favorites but I leave that for the beer reviews. The food has been pretty good when I have eaten there. The sandwiches, brats, burgers, and chili are all really good bar dishes and go well with the beer they serve. I usually go when it is quiet but I knwo they do have specials and stuff like open mic or trivia nights. Descent.“

“Ate here on the return from Half- Time (This time accompanied by the wife for economic responsibility reasons) Even for a Saturday lunchtime crowd this place felt like a tomb. Three tables incuding ours and a few regulars settled in at the very nice and spacious bar. Brewpub is encased in glass walls around the eating areas. Cobweb ridden banquet hall. Saw the winkle lager on the menu and inqurired if it was the same stuff from the skytop steakhouse in Kingston, NY. Answer: Yes, both establishments are owned by the same folks. It seems that this one was opened first. At least this place has better lighting and you can see your food.“

“plan looking brewpub, clean, nothing to point out except some cool smaller TVs in the bar area. came in on an empty Friday evening, regular bartender, could have been more attentive on an empty night. Got only on thing to eat but it was really good, mini burgers, who knows about the rest, menu was standard brewpub. Now the beer, pretty crappy, most everything had some diacetyl, pale lager was turning sour and in late October they still had an Octoberfest as the seasonal. 16 bucks for a growler of below average beers. I probably will not be returning.“

“Beer was tasty, food was ok.No t-shirts or stickers. I got one of three pint glasses they had left. The beer made up for it though, not bad for lagers and basic beers“

“Pretty generic atmosphere with breweriana and old time bric a brac from the area strewn about the place. There was a terrible aroma of stale wet carpet and cat fur that was off putting to say the least. Service was perfunctory. While the beers were not awful, there was really nothing special here. The food was not very good and lead to heartburn after the fact. Very greasy and not exceptionally tasty. As Rasta says, either we hit a particularly bad day or the place is going downhill because this doesn’t seem like the place that doc and maibock describe at all...“

“Generic selection with mostly low-gravity, husky lagers. Awful food, I took the BBQ pizza and it was served with canned corn on it.. can you imagine what the beer tasted like after? Either a bad day or the palce is getting worse. Dull rural restaurant atmosphere with old furniture odors laying in the air. Poor.“

“They actually make decent lagers here. Decent selection of taps, and decent quality brews. Food seamed pretty good as well, although we did not eat more than a couple of appatizers. Friendly staff. Look forward to another visit.“

“5 good beers plus one rotating one. The beers are above average, and the food is top notch. I believe they keep a Culinary Institute of America graduate on staff here. A place to bring the family, or just hang out for a few pints.“
