“Large old school place, 1980s vibe, a bit dank and scruffy, but fun. Bar is in the back with lots of sports on lots of TVs. Restaurant tables. Lots of young staff. A dozen or so beers on tap, all the usual old skool styles. Pub grub. An OK stop if you're in town anyway.“

“Small taproom, just a curved bar and two restaurant tables, really, plus the brewhouse behind the bar, and the tiniest pizza oven I've ever seen. Beers were just OK with an occasional standout. Flights of four available. And pizza of course. Good service. Only if you're in the neighborhood.“

“Finally made it here. I should really visit more often when seeing in-laws. Troy isn’t nicest but this place is a little gem. Mix of regulars drinking labatts and Bud light and then craft beer people. I didn’t get any food. Skipped over Hill Farmstead and Trillium on menu to get some new brewery ticks they had a bunch of breweries I’ve never seen in area before. Could’ve done damage if didn’t have to drive and meet up with family. I got 4 5oz pours including an Imp Stout and bill was $14.50 so quite reasonable. And I like 5oz size can try a bunch but feel more substantive than standard 3oz flight. Friendly bartender who was by herself and it was busy but she was quite efficient.“

“Great wooden interior, somewhat cramped, especially on weekends, an with a huge upstairs area. Has a feel like a place George Washington and Edgar Allen Poe would have frequented. Service has been great, the beer selection is 12-16 strong, with extra cans to go, great seasonals. The food is excellent, with the meatloaf being in my top 5. As for beer, their pumpkin ale was a top 10er, and the IPAs hit the mark for me, plus some damn good sours. If you are in the area, you must go here. Tell them Doc Lock sent you, so they can ask who Doc Lock is and then tell you to make up your own fucking mind.“

“With my son, also a genius, attending RPI for college, I get here quarterly. Quaint and wooden interior, old but comfortable. Service was a bit slow, but it is always busy here, so no deductions there. OK beer selection with some local brews and stuff like Flower Power, nothing to write home about. The food is incredible. Everything I have eaten here, from the poutine to the BBQ meats, is out of this world. A must visit if you are in the area, although I prefer Brown's if you are just looking for beer.“

“Long and spacey bar with dark wood everywhere, decorated with tap handles on the ceiling, a shuffleboard and other English pub memorabilia. A vry good list of 30 beers on tap, small but nice food menu, knowledgeable and friendly bar staff, soft music and not too many people on a Sunday noon. A very good option to visit if you’re in Albany or Troy.“

“Fine place in industrial park. Nice tasting room that was busy at last call at 6pm not sure why they close so early when at least 30 people there when I visited chilling or playing corn hole. Plenty of brews available of their design. Which are decent enough. Staff really friendly and accomadatimg.“

“This is a great place in an old building in Troy on the hudson river. Great outdoor seating and a nice bar area and dining area. I really like the atmosphere. Food is solid. Well done pub food. Beers have been average over the years but they tend to have a pretty good selection. Lately it seems they have strayed from brewing the normal "safe" beers and added more variety to the list. My last visit they had a Berliner Weisse, a Saison and a fairly solid sour on tap along with the more normal beers. Definitely more impressed with the beer selection lately, nice atmosphere place, well worth a visit. “

“Stopped in here for an early lunch/flight on a Friday. Fairly empty at opening, but it filled up fairly quickly considering the time. Nice backyard patio overlooking the water. Flight was a good price. Wing sauce from the Cherry Raspberry was tasty. Pils was my favorite of the flight. Very crisp and refreshing on a warm summer afternoon.“

“Another stop I made a long my way up to Vermont. When I went in, I couldn’t believe I saw what I saw, the selection was spectacular as a lot of high end beers were there, Ballast Point, Alesmith, Pizza Boy, and a stellar high end selection internationally as well. Holy crap, pleasant surprise with a bit of a rougher ambiance, but I didn’t mind. It’s all about the beer and service. Two different workers asked me if I was looking for anything which was nice but usually I don’t always need that. I’d probably make this a go to stop more as I make my way between Vermont and PA.“

“This is a great small brewery in downtown troy. Great atmosphere and a good selection of their own beers on tap. The beers were all good that I had and they seem to do some more interesting styles. Had a cheese plate and maybe some basic snack food, but you are not going there for the food, it is a small brewery. The brew equipment is right behind the bar (looks like maybe 3 barrel system??). I was very psyched with the addition of this brewery to troy, and the beers they are making are interesting. Definitely worth stopping in... Several times.“

“This is a nice representation of a brewery in Troy. They put out decent beer offerings and maintain the turn of the 20th century feel in the old brick building. Sat at the bar with a couple friends for lunch. They only had their beers on tap, but what do you expect when you head to a brewpub? I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I had six beers that day, favorite being the oatmeal stout. The food and the selection was well above average for this type of establishment. Prices fall in line with everyone else, reasonable and expected. Overall, if I lived closer, I’d be here more often supporting my locals.“

“Ahhh, the Ruck....Troy.....Troilet. This is a great bar for Troy. Probably the only reason I venture out an hours ride to Troy anyway. While Troy is making a comeback, the overall area is still strugling. The Ruck is the best foot forward from Troy. Filled with tons of dark wood, and dim lighting. Definitely has that local neighborhood city bar feel.... Plenty of patrons any time of the week. GREAT beer selection, with more than enough to satisfy anyone’s palate, including a cask ale. Servers are quick, polite, knowledgeable and are there for you. Prices are about what you expect for craft beer. Overall, check the website for tap offerings and make your way over.....at least once to check it out, you won’t be dissapointed.“

“Located in the ground floor of the Hilton Garden Inn. If you do not like sports bars, then you should avoid this place. There are televisions virtually everywhere. A nice touch is local school uniforms and memorabilia. Lots of neon too. Varied selection of beers on tap. The food is mediocre at best. Service is very attentive and friendly, which is the best quality of this place. If you’re staying at the hotel, its worth checking out.“

“Stopped here for a repeat visit. On our first visit (a Friday night) it was jam packed. We only sampled appetizers and drank at the outside bar. The apps that we had were good. This time we made a lunch trip while visiting RPI. The ambiance is good: I love using these old brick buildings for things like brewpubs. I never get tired of being in a place like this. Service was excellent. We had sandwiches for lunch. My wife had the French Dip, which she said it was one of the best she ever had. My Hickory Chicken was top notch. The beers are pretty good too. Worth a stop!“

“I know a lot of people dislike this brewery’s beers, but LOVE the taproom. I think I like both equally (well, maybe the restaurant is a little better).

I like the atmosphere here. A mixture of rustic and metropolitan. There’s two floors, plus a bar area and a back deck overlooking the ugly Hudson River.

They usually carry about 8-10 of their own beers on tap at any given time. You can do a flight of all of them for about $9 (not a bad deal). Pints are reasonably priced and there’s a different "beer of the day" every day. Look for cask beer on Thursday nights. Though I hate the fact that almost everything is served in shaker glasses (except their wheats and Belgians). I’ve heard complaints of diacetyl, DMS, etc though I rarely get those myself. I recommend their pumpkin beer, their Belgian golden ale and their world famous Whiskey Barrel Aged Porter. For a fun beer cocktail: blend their oatmeal stout with their cherry raspberry or ask for a shandy made with their pilsner and lemonade.

Food here is excellent. A little on the pricey side, though. Not much on the menu is priced below $10. It’s a great for groups - just order a few appetizers and split the cost. It’ll be surprisingly inexpensive.

Service has always been good. Nothing particularly memorable though (good or bad).

Saturday or Sunday afternoons in the summer on the deck are probably the best times to visit.“

“A diamond in the rough. This used to be a generic dive/college bar but has morphed into a full craft beer bar and restaurant in the last few years. The food menu was recently given a complete makeover with a lot of creative options. Though the "wing burger" is still a safe bet.

The interior has a ski lodge type of look to it. Everything’s made of wood! There’s usually plenty of seating around the bar or at various tables and booths. The bathroom needs to be re-done as it always looks kinda dirty.

Service is usually pretty good. You order from the bar and they’ll bring food to your table. Prices on food and beer are reasonable.

Beer selection is very good, especially for a bar of this type. There was a time when they’d carry Miller Lite on tap, but now all BMC beers are only available in bottles. Tap lineup is usually mid-range craft like magic hat and Sam Adams, though there’s always higher-end stuff like Southern Tier, Dogfish Head, Stone, Allagash, Evil Twin, etc. There’s also a cask engine that’s constantly rotating (the taps are, too). I wish they would put the tap list all in one place and make it easy to read instead of having three chalkboards scattered around the bar and high up difficult to read.

They have tap takeovers all the time, sometimes on a weekly basis. Dogfish Head Night is HUGE.

If you want to avoid the college crowd, weeknights before 7pm are best. In fact, they have a great happy hour selection of drafts from 4-7. After 8pm there’s almost always live music, a DJ or trivia or something like that.

This place is getting better all the time.“

“Apparently this is the best beer place in the capital region of New York state. Seeing the tap selection, I am not surprised. That said, you are better looking up the tap list online than trying to figure out what it is in the bar because it is scattered on a number of chalkboards throughout the place without any rhyme or reason. However, the bar has the feel of a neighborhood sports bar, which is fine in its own way. Plenty of TVs that happened to be playing America’s Funniest Home Videos and Wipe-Out while I was there. The food was plenty good enough. Good wings, OK hamburgs, and quite tasty tater tots (covered in God-knows-what... but all the better). I had two beers I have never seen in NYC, which is big ups of course.“

“They haven’t quite figured out the decor in this joint yet (a couple couches, a couple tall tables, a door on its side used as a makeshift table), but with a few buds it was a heckuva time. The guys at the tap are very knowledgeable and friendly. They do a sampling of five (big) beers for $10, which is steep for a tasting room but not bad when you consider that all 5 beers are Big Boys. (You can also save the chips for later if you don’t want to use them right then and there.) They have 5 taps and one bottle sample of your choice in the middle. I must say I really enjoyed myself and found the brewers to be enthusiastic fanboy types, instead of too-cool-for-school brooders (which you get at, say, ROC brewing). Good spot.“

“Really cool bar in Troy. Nice old bar ambiance (lots of wood, almost looks like an old barn or horse stable) with a solid selection of beers, and the wings were quite tasty. Didn't try any other food, but the beer list and wings and cool atmosphere would easily get me back there. Great bar.“

“Visited: 1-24-12 A: The place looks like a dump from the curb..and even when you enter inside, it is not that impressive but eventually turns out to be a good low key beer bar...a shit hole..but a good shit hole. Q: The quality of beers were decent, my biggest complaint was I had several beers that were under carbonated...a big deal!!! S: The service was decent, no issues but didnt smoke you either. S: A decent selection, of 20+ taps, very very few macros but you do see a good amount of style overlaps for a small tap list. F: Had a mediocre turkey burger with over cooked fries....ordered chicken wings later on which were worthy of the 40 cent wing night value. The place seems to be over valued by the locals....this is the Buffalo NY equivalant of Mr.Goodbar (with better bathrooms). V: A decent value...not over nor under changed on food or beers. Overall, the bar is a decent beer bar but you can find better places in the greater Albany area (but not more interesting).“

“Visited: 9-22-11 I personally believe locals over hype their near by places. I live on the other side of NYS, so I am an unbiased person. The brewery is located inside of an old building along the river and maintains a lot of the structural heritage. It has 2 floors for seating and a back patio that overlooks the river out back. They had 11 of their beers on tap and Guiness, along with their bombers in the cooler for sale. The bartenders were attentive and the beers I had (Oktoberfest and Harvest IPA) were decent. I didn’t try and food this time but will in the future. The prices were 4.50/pint which is average for a brewpub. I will probably stop back in the future to try more from their arsenal in the near future.“

“Production facility with bar at front. Located in small industrial park just off I-87 Exit 11. Limited hours vary by day. Small room with comfortable sofase, chairs, tall tables over barrels, merchandise room and small serving bar. Four (4) taps and occaisional cask. Five four-ounce sampler set sold and includes the single sampling glass. RElaxed environment, Rock’n’roll tunes. Friendly bartender - Tom. Numerous large (22oz or 750ml?) and 12-ounce bottles chilled and available to-go. Growlers/fills also. Special treat was a small batch made by a homebrewer and served on cask. Nice support for the non-traditional. Just getting started, with a few brews still contracted in nearby Saratoga Springs but off to a great start.“

“Stopped in multiple times during my time in Schenectady. A large building sitting over the river that can be a bit loud at prime time. Tap list is nice, with a beer brewed specially for them, but nothing too special overall. Service is nothing special and slow during prime time. Barbeque is real nice and the prices make it worth your while. Not a beer destination per say, but if you are looking for good food and a decent selection, worth a stop.“

“Multiple visits. Good beer selection on draft, and is constantly rotating. Website is not accurate to what is actually offered. Great place to stop in for a pint or two, and snack on some free popcorn. Their food is good, but always seems to take awhile to come out. I really enjoy their take on a Reuben. They usually offer several seasonals at a time, and there is also usually one "gem" on the list that is hard to find locally on draft. When I’m out in Troy, it is a good place to grab a bite and a brew.“

“I’ll admit: I first thought of The Ruck as just a college/townie bar, tucked away in good ol’ Troy. Well, while that might not be *totally* inaccurate, it is certainly a great example of the "genre." “Yum, Dinosaur! They have some fantastic food and a great beer selection. The place gets JAM PACKED because of its reputation (that, combined with the fact that it is one of the popular RPI hangout spots) and that has a noticed effect on the service. “Brown’s is great. I love most of their beers, and they usually have 7-8 beers on tap. The ambiance is fantastic (although, at times, incredibly loud) and the food is phenomenal. That said, we’ve gone there a few times and they’ve been out of many of their beers, and when it’s really busy (which it is at all of the predictable times: Thursday-Sat night), the service drops off tremendously. Given this, I had to give them a 6 for service, but other than that, it’s a great place to go in Troy!“

“One of the few success stories of Troy. It’s inside what appears to be an old factory shell in a row of older commercial brick buildings. A wonderful air about it. When the college up the hill, RPI, has something big the staff is at times overwhelmed so if it’s a big weekend expect a longer conversation. It’s a comfortable place so when it happens it’s never bothered us. Decently built brews and good food. An enjoyable experience.“

“Just a stone’s throw from Brown’s Brewing, this place is usually hopping, even on a Sunday, in which I had about a 20 minute wait. Luckily, there is a pretty long bar, a nice vibe (if a little loud) and a nice tap list to help the minutes with the vibrating pager fly by. I had the sausage link sandwich (apparently Troy is the only Dinosaur location where they are doing that option right now), and it was really really good. They give you a good amount of food, smoky and delicious, and not too pricey. You could either have a few here and then eat at Brown’s, or vice-versa, but it’s almost criminal not to visit both if you are in the area and have the time.“

“From the outside, it looks like a scary townie bar. Inside, it still does, but with a pretty friendly contingent of locals and college kids.
