80 /100 178 CATAWBA AVE Was staying in Old Fort for a family event so naturally this was a 5 minute walk and I had to stop. Just before closing on a Saturday, had mostly cleared out, but not empty. Had to try the cask offerings given that's their thing, and would call the cask brown I had the second best cask beer I've ever had (best is still an English strong ale from Machine House in Seattle, but to be mentioned with Machine House is a sign that these folks are legit). Bitter was very good, too.
Would stop here before Hillman if in Old Fort, but both are very worthy visits. |
78 /100 78 CATAWBA AVENUE Swung by on a Friday evening, busy place. Nice spot, right along a river, around 24 taps of their own beer, wide variety of styles (tending lighter but plenty of IPAs/dark stuff), including some wackier styles, all done generally well. Food was good. Kid and dog friendly. Good place. |
70 /100 178 CATAWBA AVE Twenty-Five minute drive, east out of Asheville. You might recognize the folks from one of the local farmer's markets around town. Locate up the block from Hillman brewing, just before the old bridge. New barn construction with fresh lumber patio furniture, gravel parking, garden bed walls & string lights. Concrete & soft colors inside, corner bar, letters on a ledge instead of a chalkboard for the tap list. Coolers to the left & right for local produce. 8 taps, 4 side pulls, a couple on cask. 10 beers on currently. They only bottle the bitter right now, but growler fills are fine of course. Mr. Whaley is very friendly & you can tell he really loves recreating classic/underappreciated styles & can seriously talk. The 1910 Fuller's clone on cask was very good.
Imperial pint or half liter pours across the board. Super affordable & sloshable $4/$5/$6 options, nothing over 6.5% abv today, no flights, but tasters are offered.
Couple large & clean gender neutral bathrooms through the back door, where you can peek at the very shiny hardware. BYOF & I didn't see any mention of food trucks yet. No music, no tvs, as it should be.
Hope they make it. |
