78 /100 Steinkeller (Restaurant) 15 E HIGH ST Steinkeller is in the basement of a four-story building on High Street, the main drag in Oxford. They’ve done all they can to create atmosphere in the space of a fairly new building, using a lot of dark wood and paint and faux stone to create a German cellar/bierhall kind of atmosphere. The staff is friendly and attentive. Prices are about $6 for a half liter and about double for a full liter, and they have about 20 taps of German beer, and not just the 20 most common to the US. Very well done. The food is decent, good sausages and everything else was average. I’ll definitely be back whenever I’m in Oxford. |
66 /100 Steinkeller (Restaurant) 15 E HIGH ST Fairly authentic German food, acceptable selection of German beers (though they could use several Kölsch along side of their lagers). My Reuben was quite well executed, the ’kraut dry and well made, and their red cabbage salad delicious. The family loved the bratwurst and mettwurst. |
86 /100 Steinkeller (Restaurant) 15 E HIGH ST One of my favorite places to get a beer, an amazing selection of German imports on tap, great food as well. Just reccommend to go there when classes aren’t in session... It turns into your typical college bar on some nights. |
68 /100 Steinkeller (Restaurant) 15 E HIGH ST Food wasn’t bad, and the beer selection was pretty good. The place tries a little too hard to look like a European tavern. Overall it’s pretty good. |
70 /100 Steinkeller (Restaurant) 15 E HIGH ST subterranean Bavarian beer hall. Best place in or around Oxford |
64 /100 Steinkeller (Restaurant) 15 E HIGH ST I travel to this location ONLY because it is the closest location to my Indianapolis home at which I can find Kostritzer on tap. The food is mediocre, servers not well versed in their beers. Other than that, it’s great. |
58 /100 Steinkeller (Restaurant) 15 E HIGH ST The Steinkeller offers a limited selection of German beers on tap. Highlights include Schneider Aventinus, Paulaner Salvator, Spaten Optimator, and Franziskaner Hefe-Weissbier. Also has one or two rotating taps usually occupied by Maibocks or Oktoberfests. Service is typically mediocre and sometimes terrible; there is often quite a bit of &quo;lag time&quo; between paying for a beer and actually receiving it. Great food though. Atmosphere is typically loud and smoky, and it is difficult to have a conversation in this environment. Update 7/1/04: The Steinkeller is going through a &quo;new management&quo; cycle (according to a waiter) and has eliminated many of the unique items on its menu, including Goetta, their exquisite scallops, and several of their German dishes. Apparently unique offerings are too challenging for the corporate Oxford crowd. Not sure what this means for the future of their beer selection... |
