42 /100 Twin Peaks Liquors (Beer Store) 605 E. HOLLAND AVENUE Small liquor store in a small, remote town. Small selection, but there was more craft than macro, so decent selection given the expectations. Got a six pack of beer from a brewery in Midland that I’d never seen at home, and the guy who sold it to me was really friendly. |
32 /100 Twin Peaks Liquors (Beer Store) 605 E. HOLLAND AVENUE The craft beer selection is pretty modest, and for the most part available only in full six packs. There are a few tall boy cans from bigger micros and single bottles of one craft beer from Mexico. That was my only purchase. If they offered build your own six packs, I probably would have ended up with another dozen. |
18 /100 Porter’s Thiftway - Alpine (Beer Store) 104 N 2ND STREET This place is not a particularly attractive or inviting store. The beer select is six packs only, some sitting on the floor collecting dust. Aside from two or three Texas micros, a couple from New Mexico and one from Rogue, this place is dominated by macros. Not recommended except for the truly desperate. |
66 /100 Twin Peaks Liquors (Beer Store) 605 E. HOLLAND AVENUE This place had a *much* better selection than the grocery store down the street. I was pleasantly surprised to find Goose Island Bourbon County Stout and other good brews. |
34 /100 Porter’s Thiftway - Alpine (Beer Store) 104 N 2ND STREET They did have a slightly less than average selection of craft beer but 85% of it was warm on the shelves. MUCH better cold beer was found at the liquor store down the street. |
84 /100 3401 WEST HIGHWAY 90 How could I not love the place a dear friend brewed and got up and running as I attended his memorial. I kept myself from making this the highest rating possible, but did consider it.
What a day to be there. Sad as it was, I saw so many old friends, swapped stories and at BBQ and other tasty food and drank beer all afternoon before going barely down the street to the hotel and continuing at the bar there.
RIP Steve. You will ever be there in spirit. |
72 /100 Rail Road Blues (Bar) 504 WEST HOLLAND AVENUE LOUD. It was LOUD on a Saturday night. Metal blaring. Seemed kinda fitting for the eve of the memorial for Steve Anderson. Drank yet another La Frontera in his honor with my friend that brewed with him many years ago and Chip (owner of Live Oak) as it was noted that when Steve worked at Live Oak he would drive kegs all the way out here so he and others could enjoy it. Perfect dive for that night. |
64 /100 3401 WEST HIGHWAY 90 Industrial style building loacated at edge of Alpine, TX on HI 90. The person thatnnormallybgives the tours was not there but a nice woman in the fiancé department showed us the brewery and served some samples. High marks on friendliness - not so high on ambiance. They are in the process of expanding, especially to increase their cold storage size. They currently have 4 taps serving samples. |
64 /100 Porter’s Thiftway - Alpine (Beer Store) 104 N 2ND STREET Somewhat upscale grocery store in Alpine. What surprised me was the fact that they had a very nice selection for a town of 6000 people. Various New Belgium selections, some TX microbrews, Ommegang, Unibroue choices, etc... This was definitely a surprise and makes it a must stop on the way to Big Bend to stock up on decent tasting beer as opposed to the typical BMC selection you would expect in a small town. Stop by if you can, it’s worth it. |
88 /100 Rail Road Blues (Bar) 504 WEST HOLLAND AVENUE If u like a place where u can choose to session up or swill up either in house wiz budz, or playing pool out back, or gathering out by the Fireplace, or dancing with the Starz (Live Band), I can’t think of a better Locale. Oh and the beer selection is next to none. Like the other ratebeerian said. They got anything from Belgiums to Stouts, from Ales to Yellow Tail. Enjoy. |
80 /100 Rail Road Blues (Bar) 504 WEST HOLLAND AVENUE Stopped by here recently on a backpacking trip to Big Bend NP. Nice atmosphere, live music and a good selection of cold beer. Everything you would want in a Texas beer joint. Definitely hit this place up if you are in Alpine. |
94 /100 Rail Road Blues (Bar) 504 WEST HOLLAND AVENUE For a small town in the middle of the desert, Alpine sure has a nice beer scene. This place is a MUST if you are passing through; the bottle selection is such that you WILL find something you like. They have Belgians, Victory, Colorado beers, and just about everything else. When you’re there, ask for David. He’s the barback, and he is one nice dude with a TON of stories to tell. Great place that reeks of Don Ganter, for all you Ags out there. |
