50 /100 240 S. SEGUIN AVENUE Hotel near the center of the city. I use to visit Thursday for trivia way back when. There are a few pretty good beers but most need some work. Food is about average. Prices were fair. Service was definitely on the slower side. |
70 /100 Phoenix Saloon (Bar) 193 W SAN ANTONIO ST Large old wooden bar right downtown. Mostly local brews in tap as well as bottles. The food is pretty solid. Live music most nights. |
66 /100 240 S. SEGUIN AVENUE This is in an old traditional hotel in the middle of town. Parking in the rear. Large L shaped bar and lots of tables. Bartendress was also waiting tables, so the service was very slow, but courteous enough. Food was OK. Six beers on, and flights of four are available. A decemt enough stop between Austin and San An. |
76 /100 Spec’s Liquor - Creekside Way (Beer Store) 263 CREEKSIDE WAY This is the newest and largest Spec’s in the New Braunfels area and well worth a visit. They a have a nice and growing selection of beers and helpful and knowledgable staff. |
60 /100 240 S. SEGUIN AVENUE Brewpub in the lobby of a hotel. Service was good. Beer was a mixed bag with some good house beers as well as some not so good house beers. Guest taps were decent. Located right off the traffic circle in downtown New Braunfels so an easy place to swing by if you are in the city. |
76 /100 BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse - New Braunfels (Restaurant) 951 COLD SPRINGS DR If you’ve been in one BJs, like McDonalds, you’ve been in them all. Their beer is enjoyable. Their guest tap selection is decent. The food is always good. But if you go there to gain any beer knowledge you’ve come to the wrong place. |
74 /100 Spec’s Liquor - Walnut Ave (Beer Store) 1551 N WALNUT AVE While its nice to a new Spec’s closer than Austin, it’s a shame that it is a small store with a small selection of beers. Maybe it will grow. |
66 /100 240 S. SEGUIN AVENUE An old style bar with lots of history and atmosphere. Approximately 10 taps and a fair selection of bottled beers. The home brews can be hit and miss but overall having a beer at the Faist is an enjoyable experience. |
68 /100 Black Whale Pub (Bar) 367 MAIN PLAZA Great neighborhood bar atmosphere. ~ 10 taps and a large selection of bottled beer. Good selection of Belgian beers. Each booth has two overhead TV's, one on each side of the booth - a nice touch. |
76 /100 Black Whale Pub (Bar) 367 MAIN PLAZA Pub right in downtown New Braunfels. When I stopped by they had a handful of Texas beers, including a few from Guadalupe Brewing, Live Oak and Shiner. The bartender was friendly. A nice, laid back atmosphere made for an enjoyable hour of trying local beers. |
72 /100 Phoenix Saloon (Bar) 193 W SAN ANTONIO ST A nice little pub in downtown New Braunfels. Had about 20 beers on tap, including a few local beers from Guadalupe Brewing. I didn’t try the food so I can’t comment on that. |
60 /100 Friesenhaus (Restaurant) 148 S CASTELL ST Great selection of German beers, not much else. Decent food, but a little pricey for downtown New Braunfels.
Has a nice German feel to the place, not surprising considering the owners are from Germany. |
76 /100 Phoenix Saloon (Bar) 193 W SAN ANTONIO ST Great little bar in downtown New Braunfels. A large selection of draft and bottle beer, including a lot of regional microbrews. Best chili anywhere and great burgers. Live music most evenings. |
62 /100 The Grapevine (Beer Store) 1612 HUNTER RD. (Visited 09/2009):
The Grapvine is located in Gruene which is sort of a suburb of New Braunfels, a few miles from I-35. The store is on the main street of downtown Gruene, and there is street parking throughout the area.
The place is a wine shop but they do have a cooler full of beer that has an emphasis on Texas beers. The brewers represented include Shiner, Real Ale, Alamo, Blue Star etc. There are also a couple of micros from Sierra Nevada and New Belgium. Overall the selection is not great but for the area I was pleased. The beers are also available in singles for a whopping $3 or so per bottle.
Service was decent on a weekday afternoon. Again it is a wine store but the people behind the counter were friendly and helpful.
Overall this place is worth checking out if you are in the area to go "Toobin’", or any other reason. |
60 /100 240 S. SEGUIN AVENUE (Visited 08/2009): Stopped at the Faust Hotel on the way back to our hotel after a day of "Toobin’" and were disappointed to learn they are not currently brewing their own beers. However, the license is in the works and they say they will be producing again in the next couple months.
The historic hotel is located on Seguin Ave just a few blocks from the town circle. New Braunfels is not too far off I-35. There is street parking in front and the hotel appeared to have parking as well.
The interior is like stepping back in time, and the bar is directly past the registration desk to the left. The bar is relatively narrow with bar and table seating.
Despite not having their own beers, the hotel did have around 8 beers on tap from brewers like Real Ale (Fireman’s/Alamo Golden and ESB), and Harpoon, along with imports from Spaten, Guinness and Lefebvre. They also have a decent bottled selection again with local/regional beers represented.
Service was good on a slow weekday late afternoon. The bartender was in the know about the brewing situation and was very friendly.
We did not have any food on our visit.
Overall I liked this quaint bar in this old hotel and would definitely attempt to visit again once they start brewing. |
28 /100 240 S. SEGUIN AVENUE This place is tucked away in the Faust Hotel....but it has never been busy when I’ve been in there...maybe it’s because both times I’ve been there has only been one beer on tap, a brown. Anyway...they have no food, except for popcorn, and the waitstaff (one semi-cute girl) is only somewhat helpful. It has a good interior, but it’s certainly not meeting it’s potential, which is too bad. |
