“Another DBBC location. Gotta love that Inbev money. They're kinda becoming an empire. They will need some luck in this place though. Hardywood Park and Skipping Rock Breweries have been in the exact same place but not for long. Parking really sucks around here. Good luck. I guess they are counting on foot traffic. It was really dead around 530 on a Saturday. Nice inside. Never seen Adirondack-style bar "stools" before but they have them. Almost too comfortable. Service was good. Beers were good. A few brewed on site but most brewed at the original locations. Didn't eat but the menu looked fantastic. Worth a stop if you can find parking.“

“When you need to make a beer run…do I even need to finish this sentence? When in C-ville this is my spot. Solid selection, some singles, 10-ish taps. Can’t beat it in this neck of the woods.“

“This turned out to be the oasis I needed. Awesome beer and great food Don't be the limited by the tap list, the cooler's wide open for selections too. Burger was on point as well, Tasty and hit the spot. Awesome service. Whether to drink on site or eat or get to go, don't miss this place.“

Foods of All Nations (Grocery Store)
2121 IVY RD.
“Last review from 2013, not surprising. Selection has nothing you won't find at any other store in the area. Quite disappointing, since you might expect them to have beers "of all nations" as well. Alas, that's not the case. Some ciders and meads as well in the wine section, few single bottles of beer, and nothing I hadn't had. Higher prices on the beer and mead than any other store in the area.“

“Stopped by yesterday. On the Charlottesville pedestrian mall. No food of their own, but they are served by the restaurant next door. Food is pricy. But probably pretty good. Didn't try it. Smallish inside. Large patio. Might get cramped during the colder months. 12 or so beers on tap. Tried 8. All good. Two bartenders, one of whom is the brewery, were both friendly and helpful. Beer prices solid. Rockfish is growing quickly but the beer is still good. Well worth a stop.“

“Interesting place, with a nice view of the river if you sit in the right spot. Big, open warehouse/modern, could be any modern brewery inside. Not a ton of seating area for the huge room, but likely due to COVID still being a thing. The place was rather empty on a Sunday afternoon, perhaps two other tables and a solo guest sitting on a couch. Server doesn't drink at all, so if I was looking for a personal recommendation, I wouldn't have gotten it - other than what he's been told. That's fine - I don't need a recommendation, but someone else might. He was very friendly and interested in knowing how I truly felt about the beer compared to some of the other locals (more on that later), and I can't fault him for anything, really. Flights available? No - "the brewer knows all of his beers are good, so we don't offer flights." Hmmm, that's not a good answer, nor does it solve the issue of I want to try everything. "I had a customer yesterday that just ordered one of everything." OK, well, 6 oz pours are available - at what appears to be a minimum of $4 each (some $5, one $8), oh wait they have a special on one of them for $3. So, to try everything, I would have paid $38 for the smallest pours. In addition to overpriced pours, there's an 18% service charge to pay for the entire staff, but that's not a tip, so tip is extra. Food - well, I ordered the fish and chips (which I can't seem to pass up if it's on the menu). Where it was tasty, the amount of fish provided was laughable. Oh and they choose to go with crinkle fries, which in my entire life, I have known only one person who preferred crinkle fries to any other style. My companion went with the veggie bowl with homemade tofu puree... she suggested to me they should focus on something other than making their own tofu, as there is some good tofu out there and this didn't compare. So, beer compared to others locally? Hmm, it was pretty good. 3/4 of the ones I tried were solid+, none outstanding, and one was a milkshake IPA listed as a NEIPA (the description mentions generous lactose, but don't fucking call it an NEIPA if the thing's backbone is lactose not just for people like me who are sick of lactose in anything other than an imperial stout, but especially for those who are lactose intolerant). I should have branched out and tried a different style, but 24 ounces of three IPAs and an imperial stout already cost me $21. So... I'd say the quality is on par with Rockfish. Not quite as strong as Decipher or Reason, but it's good. I'd absolutely return, but honestly I have a few suggestions to make me want to return more than once or twice a year: 1) offer a fucking flight. If "all" of the beers are good, let people try them. 2) Incorporate your "service charge" into your prices, and let people know this. Looks really shitty, IMO, to tell the customer we're paying 18% in addition to the price listed on them menu, then an additional 20% tip on top of that. So basically, they're billing you low (perhaps for their own tax purposes), and then my overall bill is 38% higher than the menu prices. 3) The server was very nice and competent, but in a brewery, it might be best to have someone that enjoys and appreciates beer. I understand that some people don't drink for a variety of reasons, but in this situation first-hand experience is really key to the average customer (I think about the times I'd gone to a restaurant and the server says something to the effect of "I haven't tried that" or "I don't know, I don't eat here.")“

“Wonderful venue. Spacious inside with also outside seating. Our food was excellent with very good service. Google maps take you to the opposite side from the entrance. Plenty of parking. They have both low and high tables. Flights of four samples are offered with a good selection. High ceiling maybe 28-32 feet. TV's on the walls for sporting events. No diet beverages, but they have unsweetened tea.“

“Definitely better than the prior reviews from when the store first opened. This is an alcoholic's grocery store heaven. Tons of wine and tons of beer (and some sake too). Two large build-your-own 6 pack sections: macro, micro, local selections. Tons of variety in 4, 6 & 12 packs: stuff from all over, including some Virginia beers I hadn't seen elsewhere (but were not singled out). I left with a case of singles I hadn't tried, some sake, a few larger bottles, and a 12-pack mix. Build your own 6 at 11.99, which is pricier than Kroger ($9.99) or Teeter ($10.99), but way more variety... and there are a few in the build-your own where you'd probably make out price wise vs. an actual 6-pack if you stocked a 6 full of the singles. No service at all in the beer section. I hate the layout of the store, in general, and it's not overly convenient to me, but I will be back.“

“Damn, I wished I lived within walking distance of the Dairy Market. Anyway, the new C-ville location is large and pretty - but not show-off pretty, but modern and simple, but quite nice. A good amount of taps - I didn't count, but if I hadn't tried so many SH bills through the years this would have been a goldmine. Service is what it is; specifically asked if we had questions (I didn't). He was friendly with me, but my companions claimed he was rude. Jealousy, I say. Absolutely worth a stop; first go pick some really good food from one of the numerous restaurant vendors, then come here, sit down and eat your food with some nice beer. I think I shall return.... tomorrow?“

“First time visiting. Nice look, 7 beers on tap and a handful more on the "coming soon" list. Bartender was unfriendly and acted overly busy, though there was only one additional couple waiting to be served. Masks required inside - totally fine, but apparently even if you're drinking beer as he made a snide comment about my companion and I (we kept our masks on until the beer was in front of us). Just doesn't seem to want to be in a service profession - and I get that, but if this is what you're currently doing, you should do it well. Beer decent, nothing memorable.“

“Starr Hill returns home. This place makes me sad, which is not Starr Hill's fault. Back before they gutted and remodeled the building I had lots of happy times here. But happily the new place has a brewery and the second location of a sandwich shop I love (Take it Away, I worked at the original location twice for about 5 years total). Bright and airy. Big patio but it was raining cats and dogs. Between that and COVID protocols I had to wait to get in. But if the weather is good it should be easy to find a seat. Bartender was excellent and friendly. A cooler of stuff to go. The building has a dedicated parking lot. 20+ beers on tap. Had a flight of 5. All were excellent (this brewery really turned a corner several years ago after many years of mediocrity). Good range of styles and ABVs. No food but there are many restaurants in the same building. Overall, a welcome addition to an already busy beer scene. I'll be back for sure.“

“Typical grocery store with a decent beer selection. A good amount of singles in two different places (look at both the craft beer side as well as the macro side). Pricey for a built your own 6 ($11.99), but there were a few singles in there that made up for it (a few pint cans I've picked up for $3-ish a piece in other places). They also have a handful of higher priced singles, but not a ton of stuff you might not find elsewhere. However, I did see a few things I've never seen at Kroger or Food Lion... maybe they'll make the rounds. Not worth going out of your way for, but if you're in the area and need some craft beer - you can definitely find stuff to drink here.“

“Stopped by just before closing on a Tuesday. A few people around. Warehouse, huge. Lots of tables, indoor and out, spaced well for COVID. Bartender was very helpful and friendly. 10 or so taps with lots of difference styles and a welcome number of low gravity options. Flight of 5 was reasonably priced. All beers were good. Plenty of parking. No food that I could tell. Overall, great addition to the Charlottesville scene, and worthy of being in the top tier of Charlottesville breweries (as crowded as that is).“

“Small place, but very comfortable. Small space dominated by a bar and with some small tables. That area is closed for COVID. Large patio area with decently distanced tables. It's tucked into the side of FIfth Season, a small homebrew and hydroponic store. Parking is fine. No food. Tried four of their beers... all well made and easy to drink. Approachable styles. Overall, a nice addition to the Charlottesville beer scene.“

“New rating, as of May, 2023: Meh. Bar and taps are gone, no more build your own 6-pack that I can find. Standard selection you'd find in any grocery store in the area. Avoid, as parking/accessibility to practically every other grocery story is easier. OLD RATING: 3/5/8/11/14 Terrific. And free delivery with Amazon Prime. What more could you ask for? Well... a larger beer selection, but it's not that their selection is bad. Good singles section, bombers on the shelf, 6, 12, cases of stuff, plus some taps. Not a bad stop at all. Or, if you're local, Amazon Prime Delivery it (no singles that I saw, but they'll do beer and wine).“

“Yard work or brewery? Hmm... I made the right choice. Difficult(ish) to find off the street as you pass Champion's distribution center and instinctively want to turn in there (it's the next left). Large, open indoor brewery with a small area outside. 8 beers on tap - every one of them above average, some receiving high marks. Service was outstanding. Scott, one of the owners, was bar tending and he was genuinely interested in both what I thought of the beers as well as some of the best breweries in the state he needs to check out (he's from Denver and hasn't been in Virginia long). In the short term, there's a Marzen brewing and thoughts of a pumpkin beer (not a spiced pumpkin - using the real thing), as well as redoing the IPA and Pale to live up to their standards (though I enjoyed both just as they are). Long term - we'll see. They're pretty new, but if they keep up this quality they'll be quite popular for a long time. Worth taking the time to find, much more so than some of the other breweries in town.“

“Updating my old rating from 2005. I stop in weekly as it's on my way home. The beer selection is quite large - if you join their mailing list you can reserve or be thrown into a lottery for some of the rare stuff that comes through town (if you have the time/patience for that). 99% of what's on the shelf can be singled out - if it can't, there's a sign. Matt is the beer guy and he's been there forever - he's very knowledgeable and helpful (if you have questions) - he pretty much leaves me alone other than a hello and quick check-up (he knows I rarely need help), but he is always more than willing to answer questions. Geoff can be a dick (won't say hello, knows nothing about beer, and for as long as he's been there, he obviously doesn't care to learn) but whatever. ("Some guy must have cleaned out his garage and brought in all the empty sixers last week." Yea, that was me, I save them and bring them back so people can use them; you even helped me unload the boxes last week). The other folks are all nice and can help out with any questions you may have, and many know me by name even when I don't know theirs. My biggest issue with the store is that there's not enough change - which, if you're not from there area would never be a problem. Since I stop in weekly, it seems that I'm bring less and less home every trip. I left this time with 5 beers. Sure, I could have bought some pricier bombers I haven't tried, but I'm not always into dropping $10+ on a single tick. Must say their prices are a little better than Beer Run, and if you're into a full case of something I think there's a discount on that (and occasionally a discount on some specials/"flights" or groups of beer). No issues with an itemized receipt - just ask (which is a problem at Beer Run), so you know you're not getting screwed. Overall - I do like this place, it is my beer store and is worth a stop. I'm not afraid to point out the issues - I doubt anything will change - just know what to expect. Oh yea, make sure you check out the single cooler at the other side of the store too.. A handful of stuff in there that is NOT on the shelves. Old review follows *********************** A nice wine shop that carries a decent amount of beer- all available in singles (even if it’s not in the "singles" section, you can pull one from a pack). Very reasonably priced, you’ll find a bunch from common micros to rare beers. Definitely a place to check out- and the staff is helpful and friendly. Some of the beer selection changes weekly, so making weekly trips will always get you something new.“

“I'll tick this place since hershiser2 added it. The most "urban" of the 29 Krogers... dirtier and more cramped than the other two. Beer selection is generally good with a decent BYO section where you'll find local and regional seasonals. Been here probably a hundred times over the years. Customer services is, well, I have stories. Nice side benefit to this place is you can also visit Wine Warehouse without moving your car (just go up the steps). Prices are solid. Good place for late night shopping for ticks.“

“Editing to add: The singles section is back, but it's smaller than the other two Krogers in town. Old review follows: This place used to have a bunch of singles and bombers. The last time I was there, the beer aisle moved to the front of the store and there was not one single. A handful of bombers, lots of 6 packs and cases, but why eliminate the create-your-own 6-pack? Perhaps it'll return, but the whole section of beer and wine seemed complete (have been twice since it moved). Absolutely no service whatsoever. I have never seen a beer person and the last wine person I spoke with was nearly a decade ago (I remember it because she was hitting on me in front of my then girlfriend and paid her absolutely no mind or cared she was even there).“

“Standard Kroger, the one in town I hit most. The beer section has a good amount of singles for make your own 6, but all of them are common. It's nice to sometimes get a 12-pack mix broken up so I can snatch a single from each rather than getting 2 or 3 of each if I bought the pre-packaged variety pack. There are some bombers as well - and make sure you look at both ends of the beer aisle for additional bombers or oddly placed 6-packs. Mary Ann is the wine lady, and she's wonderful with wines/ciders/sakes, but there's no beer person.“

“Nice place and I enjoyed my visit. Located in the funky Ix art park and literally underneath three Notch'd. Small bar and tables / booths. The koji room and brewery is visible behind the bar. 6 sakes on offer. Flight of 5 for $10 and they were happy to give me a small taste of the 6th. Three of the sakes were infusions but they are hoping to add more traditional styles as they grow. Sake quality is rustic, but good. All six were solid, and two stood out. Did not try the food menu but it looked good. Japanese cuisine not surprisingly. Bartenders were friendly and educated me on the sake making process. Overall, quite a nice stop and an excellent addition to the CVille scene.“

“Definite winery vibe as you drive up to the place after a beautiful drive. The place itself is beautiful. To the right when you walk in is a large walk-up bar where they pour their beverages. As hershiser2 put it, lots of different sorts of table / chair settings within the place. Comfortable. Also a large outdoor area that looks like it could handle a massive party, has lots of seating, but it being a rainy day in December, was not open. 6 beers on tap. Sold in a flight of 4 for $8 and in full size pours. I tried five which were all classic styles extremely well executed and highly drinkable. Hefeweizen, marzen, dunkel, ipa, and pilsner. Service was friendly but standoffish. I was a little put off when I asked for small pours of the two beers that did not fit in the flight, but was told I could have one, but could not try all the beers because "rules." WTF? I understand a policy of not giving me any small tastes, but this is just weird. So, they had a pale ale on tap I didn't try... Growlers and crowlers to go. Also a full scale winery. Food menu looks good but we ate on the way. Overall, a nice place. Not a ticker's paradise, this is gonna be a core beer + 1 seasonal kinda place. But if you want a nice outing with friends this fits the bill.“

“This score will get larger when they add more beer (currently only three on tap, but they're quite new). Getting there is a little bit of a haul (especially in the dark), and as their website says google maps isn't overly helpful. Huge tasting room decorated with antiques (including furniture), couches, big chairs, antique real paintings. Nice bar area off to the right of the main room, and a room with a fireplace (gas, but still nice). Ambiance is not quite my style, but it's quite nice. Decorated tastefully for the holidays with a giant lit Christmas tree outside. The place was empty except for one large dining room table filled with a group of people, so my companion and I had a lot of different areas to choose from (it is broken down into areas rather than just tables and chairs). Bartender very friendly, but really the most important piece: the beer is really good. Only three on tap now, but the weakest was solid and my favorite (the IPA) was fantastic. They've got several more brewing (the doppelbock is about a week away), and I look forward to coming back to try more. If they're this good this early, watch out! Thanks to obguthr for encouraging me to check the place out. I probably would have kept forgetting to do so.“

“The new Market Street Wine doesn't have the same charm the old place had. Gone are the creaky wooden floors (probably a good thing as I was sure I was going to fall through in parts), and it's much brighter and fresher now. The beer room is in the same place and still slightly spills out into the room before it, but it's not quite as big of a selection. However, service is very good: friendly and helpful. You can also break up anything in the beer room into singles. I was able to leave with a decent amount of stuff I hadn't tried. A decent stop if you're in the area.“

“EDITING TO ADD (August 2018): The beer selection here seems to have dwindled quite a bit... not that it was ever great. You'll find more choices at 7-11 these days. OLD REVIEW: As a beer destination this place has a few things that you will NOT find elsewhere (because they’re "house" brands), but that doesn’t mean you necessarily want to buy them (unlike me who bought them just to try/rate them, excited or not about my pickups). I do like this place as a grocery store, and when I was throwing back wine like it was nobody’s business I could tell you the best cheap bottles they had, but for beer go elsewhere, unless you want those few "house" beers.“

“Whoa, given my scores I guess this place actually fucks a bit more than I realized. The beers were pretty good and they had 13 on tap when I was there - enough that your wife will nag when you try to drink them all. I did nonetheless, got a bit silly by the end. The food is very legit, the service is great, and the prices are low. Pretty chill 'biance, big warehouse brewery setting. Some outdoor seating on certain days. Full of townies. My brother in law asked, "These people all live in Charlottesville? There aren't many jobs here. What do they even do?" Note that he lives in Charlottesville. Beer Run (Beer Store)
156 CARLTON RD, SUITE 203
“I haven't rated this place up until now for a reason. I'll explain later. It's somewhat organized, but there're also singles in many different places. My first stop is the dedicated singles shelf (next to the coolers) and I work my way down through the cooler. You'll also find some Virginia bombers and some random singles in the corner, also the half-moon cooler near the bar, the coolers facing the bar, and in the foreign room. Tons of bombers, oddballs I don't see elsewhere in town, shitload of 6-packs laying all over. Dedicated room to imports, which I usually browse but I've usually got about two cases of singles & bombers before I enter the room. Now, here's why I'm not in love with the place: the service has never been bad - everyone has been friendly, but nobody's helpful either... and the checkout process is a mess. One, it takes forever, two, I have no idea if the person checking me out is making sure a single scans as a single or a 6-pack. Some of them have to be manually typed in, and there's not a dedicated cashier - so it seems to usually be a bartender or waitress, and then you wonder about tipping because that's how they make their living, but there's not a tip line at any other beer store I've gone to. Summary: this place has the best selection in town (sorry Wine Warehouse, my first love and place I will always come back to, especially since it's on my way home), but it's a bit strange to check out, and I always feel a bit uncomfortable because I feel like I'm bothering someone to ring me up. I've been asked if I'm "having a party," because of all the beer I'm buying (rule #1 in a beer store - don't ask that). I've heard, "Wow, that's a lot of beer, hope you're not going to drink it all yourself!" (see rule #1). I've also heard, "I've only tried a couple since I've been here. I'm not a beer person." Hey, guess what. You're working in a beer store - yes, it's a restaurant as well, but I'm here for the beer store. No, I'm not having a party. Yes, I'm going to drink this all by myself (I have beer for sharing - this isn't it). So, that's why I haven't rated it - didn't want to sound overly bitchy. That's also why I don't go as often as I would if there was a dedicated beer-store cashier, person.“

“Huge, open airplane hanger-like with a nice cement-topped large bar, plenty of tables and different sections. Unfortunately, not my thing - I prefer a cozier atmosphere. 5 bartenders working mid-afternoon with a smallish crowd... none chatty or interested in talking other than to each other. My friend ordered nachos and then headed to the bathroom. The bartender asked if I wanted any food - I said "No." I guess that meant my friend didn't either, because he never got his nachos. He did ask about them and she said "OH YEA," but we were about done with our flights and he ended up cancelling. A person like myself that has to figure out what I need to try needs a few minutes to look over the menu. Unfortunately I felt rushed as the bartender just stood there ready to write down what I wanted in my flight (I propose do it like they used to and still do at the Sour House - give the customers the flight trays and the marker). I'll be back, I'm sure, as there will be new beers to try... but I don't love this new place.“

“A nice, new, enormous brewery! The selection of beers doesn't include too many I haven't had already, but, that being said, there is a very good selection of beers for any TNB newcomer! I will be returning here quite often, and next time I'm definitely getting some eats!“

“Decent prices, and the beer and wine selections are both top-notch. Ambience and staff are unpretentious and the staff is very knowledgable. Temperature is kept low to benefit the goods, so if you chill easily, bring a sweater. Good Belgian selection. They allow you to pull singles from any six pack. Prices are competitive and among the lowest in town. Matt the beer guy knows his stuff. Top notch place.

Gotta downgrade this, sadly. :( Just stocked up on new ticks and got several that were WAY out of date. Old score was 90.“

“Huge, and relatively new. In a cool part of town. Very close to Champion, so its a nice 1-2 punch. HUGE inside. Big tables, big bar, this place can easily fit hundreds. It's sad for me, because I love the vibe of the old place, but this is a nicely done brewery. They've hit the big time. Massive brewery visible behind glass. I sat at the bar. Staff is new at this and has trouble keeping up, but they are friendly. I got no silverware and napkins and was overcharged on my food, but they fixed it. The food, some salsa queso tater tot appetizer thing, was tasty. 16 or so beers on tap. Old-school favorites and new stuff brewed at this location. Beer quality was excellent. Good prices on beer (and food). Flights are available according to the scheme at the old place, 4 x 4 oz. for $6, and 6 x 4 oz. for 8, which is amazing nowadays. Overall well done and yet another essential stop in Charlottesville. Day trips are now impossible here.“

“I love drinking here, not because it's the best spot in town, or with the best beer selection, or the best bartenders, but because all of those components are pretty close to that status, aaaaaannndd it's a movie theater! I've only ever tried the fries here; it doesn't really strike me as a spot to eat, unless you're just grabbing a snack.“

“There is a lot of beer here, and they get their hands on a good bit of the limited inventory that comes into town. Not too shabby considering it's mostly a glorified, and enormously over-gigantic, grocery store.“

Beer Run (Beer Store)

“Really disappointing place. Not only is the selection weak, its unorganized and the staff doesn't know anything. The bartender didn't even know Aslin was from Virginia or able to offer any real recommendations of Virginia beer. Double Starfish was on tap, but come on. Not worth the stop.“

Beer Run (Beer Store)
156 CARLTON RD, SUITE 203
“UPDATE: Beer Run is expanding! Still under construction, they have taken over a neighoring unit. This results in more retail area for beer and wine, and an additional bar with 6 more beer taps and taps dedicated to coffee, kombucha, wine. Best bar in Virginia getting even better! Old score was 92.

This place has come a long way since opening. Good beer selection, weekly tastings, some glassware starting to creep in, a nice bar that features a few macros but also several nice beers. They will often get rarer things such as Starr Hill one-offs and the more rare draft offerings that come to the state. Food is tasty with a natural emphasis. This is a beer store, bar and cafe all at once. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area. I mean, how many beer stores do you know of that serve breakfast? There are rumors of expansion plans in the future. If they’re not careful, they just might end up becoming one of the state’s premier beer stops. The service is friendly and helpful to strangers but if you’re fortunate enough to get to know them, the service is that much better. I know I’ve walked in and found a rare beer in my hand before I knew what happened. Locals should come here and should do so repeatedly. Visitors should come here too as its one of the premiere stops in the area. The parking sucks. Other than that, this is a top notch place.

Update: as of November 2011, they have a whole new room for beer. The new room is the foreign beer selection and the original room is the American beer selection. It’s still a work in progress, but its already looking nice and should add to the already very nice bottle selection.“
