“Pennyweight is in a standalone building at the eastern edge of the downtown strip in Livermore. The inside is really unique. Brewing operation at one end, then some tables on the first floor and a staircase up to a mezzanine with more seating, then a big open room with the bar, more tables, and what looks like a Winnebago that serves as the kitchen. There was only one bartender working when I visited and he was friendly. I didn't eat but had a couple beers. They only had a few house taps on, but a lot of guest taps - I think I counted 18 total handles. The house beer is good, probably second best of the four I tried in Livermore. Prices are fair. Worth a stop if you're in town, especially downtown.“

“Altamont Beer Works is in an office/industrial park area on the east side of Livermore. They do the most they can with the space on the inside, large and clean and modern, with a long bar and a lot of taps. The bartenders were attentive. Prices are fair. Flights of 5 are $15. No food, but they have a regular food truck schedule. The beer is good, too - the best of any Livermore brewery I visited. It's weird to see others rated as high or close to as high, because it's clearly a step above, with maybe only Pennyweight coming close. So it would be my top recommendation in town.“

Perry’s Liquors (Beer Store)

“With a 98 score on here, I had to stop by this place when I was in town. So I popped in to check it out after a work dinner. Pretty basic liquor store except a pretty big craft beer section. Decent amount of good 4/6 packs and some single cans in the coolers. There are some large format single bottles in one cooler, as well. Then the rest of the beer aisle has predominantly very old, dusty bottles on the shelf. I found a lot in the 6-10 year old range. Looking at the ratings, most are from 2016 or earlier, which makes sense. I bet this place used to be amazing. But now, it seems like they're just not turning over any stock anymore. Seems to be indicative of what's happening with packaged craft beer in general, just not moving fast enough and there are too many breweries fighting over the same sized slice of pie. Anyway, I found one Russian River sour I hadn't tried before and brought it back to the hotel for a nightcap. It was only 3 years old.“

“Rivers End is on the eastern side of Livermore, near Altamont Brew Works but in a different industrial park. It's on the back of the building, pretty small space. There was one bartender for the small crowd, maybe 6 or so people there when I showed up. I think 9 beers were on tap and the quality is pretty low. They serve flights/small pours in very wide whiskey style glasses and appear to be giving you more than you pay for, which isn't a good thing here. I was able to visit 4 breweries in Livermore and this was by far the worst.“

“Shadow Puppet is in a small office park in the northeast corner of Livermore. The space has high ceilings that make it feel a little roomier than it is, but it isn't too small. Barstools appear to be made of old BART seats. There are close to 30 beers on tap and they're decent, from the flight I had. Prices are fair. The one bartender on duty was friendly and working hard. The rest of the people there seemed to be regulars who all knew each other. No food for sale here but I think you can bring it in. Friendly spot with a lot of options.“

“Quite similar to the Sauced location in Santana row. Excellent barbecue, but at a quite high price. You can find pulled pork sandwiches for less than $20 though. Limited beer selection of in house brewed beers, offered by the pint. So you are looking toward $40 for a couple of rates…maybe occasionally.“

“Awesome place to visit. Huge selection of 21 beers on tap. $3/taster ($5/ barrel aged beers). Tons of barrels line the walls surrounding the tasting room. Eclectic, but IPA heavy, selection. Snacks for a cheap $1. Must visit if you are in the area.“

“Typical BevMo. They could easily increase their appeal to RateBeer place raters (0.001% of their market) by offering singles of craft beers. Everything is in 4packs. Nice selection of local beers otherwise. Of course I didn’t buy anything. Bummer.“

“Statistics or adaptation at work. I quite enjoyed my visit to Rivers End brewery in late august 2022. 8 Well made beers on tap. No less than 10 barrels aging beers, though no BA beers on tap. A 4 min walk from Altamont, nestled in an industrial area of a many vineyards. Well worth a visit, especially if you have a spouse interested in visiting the wineries next door. Bonus: An anachronistic $2/taster.“

“An incredible 24 beers on tap, with a heavy, heavy weight to middle-weight IPA. No BA beers. A well run business for sure. Situated in a low cost field of vineyards in south east Bay Area. Well worth a visit, if you have a spouse interested in wine and you are into beer. Right next another brewery, several place ticks are readily available. Highly recommended. $13/flight including tax. No single cans, just 4 packs.“

“Dropped by on the way to Lake De Valle, which is a great place to swim. Very cool to visit this area: It’s like Napa, with many vineyards, but closer to Silicon Valley. Large property with 1-2acres of hops, like Cascade and Nugget. Harvest is late August, so best to visit in early September for wet hopped beers. 9 beers on tap. No flights or half pours, but free 4oz tasters . I got 1 Taster and 1 full pour for $8. I think you do 2 tasters plus 1 full pour without looking weird.“

“Large property a bit out of town among the wineries. As large as the property is, most of it is hopyards and cornhole boards. The bar is outside, as is all of the seating. No flights when I was there, but unlike pennyweight the guy was genuinely apologetic and offered samples of whatever I wanted to try. Beer was passable but not great. Fun place to hang out on a good weather day, although if they are having a cornhole tourney think twice about bringing kids; lots of drunk and rowdy college types.“

“This is nice space with parking and plenty of outdoor seating. Semi built in food truck. Roomy and spacious. Beer quality seems good enough. Problem for tickers is that they only serve full pours. When I asked about flights the bartender just smiled and said something abut them being a dying breed; which is not my experience. Even half pours were laughed at. So I got my one and done.“

“Nice sized brewery and tasting room right on the edge of downtown Livermore. They have a patio outside attached to the building as well as a "COVID-patio" out front in the parking lot. As such, parking can be a bit limited here, but there's a public garage nearby as well as several other surface lots in the downtown area. Nice open tasting room and bar area right when you come in with another area in the back where the brewhouse is. They also had a little cooler with cans in that area. They had about a dozen house drafts going and a handful of guest taps as well as some wine. Unfortunately they do not to tasters, flights, or even half pours, so you're just stuck with going for a pint and hoping you don't hate the beer. I guess maybe they'll do some free splashes, but still...kind of lame. I have had a couple beers from them before visiting and they seem to generally make pretty decent beer (except for the basil IPA, which was awful). But since you have to just go for a whole pint and I'm not absolutely in love with their beer, I don't know that this will be a place I am rushing back to any time soon.“

“I don't really know how to rate this place. So they have a lot of really good West Coast stuff (a ton of FiftyFifty, a bunch of Cascade, Bruery, Epic, etc). They also have these really oddball imports (like a few Molen bombers I've never seen before - I didn't even know Molen did bombers - and a ton of Amager). There's not much of an organizational principle that I can see though, and none of the imports really jumped out at me. So this is basically a very good shop for West Coast beer in an inconvenient location. I prefer City Beer in San Francisco for the West Coast stuff and places like Gourmet Haus in Redwood City for the oddball imports (plus they're better organized). This place is fine but the fact that this place has the same rating as, say, Bottleworks in Seattle, is just goofy. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here again.“

“Wasn't terribly impressed with this place. Loud-ish music and appeared to be understaffed (apparently the second bartender was injured the night before so I'm not holding that against them too much). Taplist was decent but unimpressive (nothing particularly rare but 20 taps of decent stuff - best were a couple of Alvarado Street taps). Not going to turn up my nose if I'm here again but better out there.“

“OK, I will start by saying this review is perhaps a bit unfair. I decided to check it out on the way out of town, not knowing there was some kind of Halloween festival today in downtown Livermore. Pretty much a zoo, but when a spot opened up right in front I decided it was fate and pulled in. Place was PACKED to the gills and service was consequently super slow. Taplist seemed fairly pedestrian overall, but there were a couple worth checking out. Did not try the food.

All in all the place gave off a vibe of a family american style restaurant that happened to have 15 beers on tap, but perhaps that was a consequence of the day of my visit.“

“The last brewery to tick in LiveNoMore - followed Joe here. This place is pretty cool, also in an industrial park, also near the freeway. Parking perhaps in a bit shorter supply, but plenty while we were there. Ambiance is pretty solid; apparently the owner put a lot of thought into things, and it shows. The name came from his daughter :). Kids room was a nice touch although it was unoccupied while I was there. Decent sized bar. Owner’s dad was working the bar and had a really friendly and outgoing personality. They offer taster flights of 4 for $7 or 6 for $10, served in this little wire holder with the logo on it. Tasters have the logo as well; again - a lot of attention to detail. Beer quality varied a fair bit; the Saison and IPA were solid, but I did not care for the Kentucky common, and the Berliner was way too simple. I agree with Joe that the Saison is a standout. Nothing special per se, just really well crafted for a straight shooting Saison. I am hoping the beers continue to improve, because the owner is doing everything else right.“

“Fourth Livermore brewery! (not counting Uncle Sam’s) This place is conveniently located in a well manicured industrial park right off the First Street exit of 580. Not a ton of parking, but you shouldn’t have a problem finding a space either in the lot or on the street.

Once inside, this place is pretty nicely laid out. Soft lighting and tasteful decor. There’s some large picnic tables and a few smaller tables scattered around. A pretty good amount of seating. The bar has about 10 places to sit and there’s a few stools in the space outside the main taproom overlooking the brewing system. There’s also a room to send your kids so they don’t have to sit and watch you drink. Lots of interesting board games too. Nice touches throughout.

The service was good. The owners Dad was there greeting everybody and seemed genuinely psyched about the whole operation. They had 7 beers on opening day and have already released three more in the first two weeks. Hopefully they keep the new beers rolling out.

The quality was decent considering how new they are. They haven’t even fired up the big system yet, so all the beers are brewed with their nano pilot system and fermented in their temperature controlled cold box. No major fermentation flaws in any of the beers, so it seems like these guys know what they’re doing. I did have a few issues with the recipes, but at least all the beers were drinkable with a few being rather pleasant. The Saison was the only beer I’d seek out again.

Overall, this is a great place for brewery geeks or degenerate tickers, but not something I’d go out of my way for just yet. Promising start though.“

“Visited on a Thursday afternoon. I’m sure this place is out of the way for most folks in the Bay Area, but it’s within blocks of where I pick up my kids on Thursday and Friday, so I imagine I’ll be here somewhat frequently.

It’s on a major commute route from Livermore to Brentwood right off the 580 (Vasco exit) in a large shopping center. There are a few tables and chairs outside the front door and lots of huge, sturdy picnic tables inside along with several other tables around the edges of the room. There’s a nice sized bar with plenty of seating as well. I’m sure they could fit 100+ people in here no problem.

I heard that Rusty from Altamont Beer Works runs the place, so as expected, there’s lots of great local beers on tap. They had several from Temescal, Tap It, Dust Bowl, High Water and others during my visit. Not the usual suspects either, some rare offerings that I hadn’t heard of before. Pretty nice. They also serve food here. I didn’t get a great look at the menu, but it looked like paninis, salads, sandwiches and the like. They even had a small kinds menu. Definitely enough to keep a person happy while the traffic dies down on Vasco. They also do flights of anything on tap.

The service was friendly and prompt and the prices seemed fair enough.

Overall, this is a solid new place. My only complaint was with the volume. Maybe I hit it on the wrong afternoon, but it seemed like there were a bunch of people already three sheets to the wind around 4:30 pm on a weekday. “

“Original review (dated February 10, 2015) below, but some changes have taken place at the tasting room, so updating the rating:

The tasting room itself is still a small business park store-front sort of deal with a bar and some scattered barrels for use as tables. They have a few TVs and WiFi, which is nice.

They now have room for about 10 different beers on tap and serve them as individual tasters, a flight, or a full pour. Flights are still done in the "one at a time" serving method with a little checklist they give you. You can also get growlers and crowlers, and they will fill outside growlers.

Service is usually pretty good here and they seem to have a pretty regular group of people working the bar, so they actually have a clue. It gets pretty busy here since it’s by far the best brewery in the area.

The best beers are almost universally their hoppy offerings, particularly the IPAs. I tend to prefer those to their higher ABV offerings which often seem to be a bit too intense on both the sweetness and bitterness, but still are generally good beers.

After striking out at every other Livermore brewery (notably Uncle Sams Misguided Brewery lololol), I finally made it to one that was open. Luckily it’s also the best of the bunch and possibly one of the best breweries in the Bay Area.

Small tasting room with maybe 7 beers on tap during my stop. They do growlers and tasters here. It looks like no full pours, which I’m guessing is some goofy licensing issue. They sort of have the flight preset to five particular beers, but if you ask they’ll let you try whichever beers you want. These guys are known for their hoppy beers, but it was nice to try some stuff like their stout and brown ale as well.

The service here is good, but the way that service is set up, it makes things a little hectic. You get one beer at a time, so you have to go back to the bar each time to get your next taster. This can be a little frustrating if it’s busy since you may have to wait awhile to get your next four ounce sample. And if you’re by yourself, you’re going to lose your spot at the table/barrel you were occupying.

Regardless of whatever shortcomings they have, it’s a definite visit if you’re driving along 580. Just too bad that you can’t have a full glass as it makes it less attractive to drive to Livermore for the equivalent of one (imperial) pint of beer.

“Dinner stop on the way home. Recommended by my buddy Brian. Main drag place, which means parking can be a bitch. I got lucky and somebody pulled out of a spot right in front. Win. Outside tables as well as a fairly large seating area inside. Taplist includes a half dozen of their beers, which they insist are their own recipes despite being brewed at Working Man. Bunch of other CA-focused taps as well. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Service again solid - nice experiences in that department all day long I must say. I ordered the burnt ends, along with Collards and Fries. Everything was good - collards were fairly spicy but good. BBQ sauces were decent. Burnt ends were excellent. Their own IPA was pretty meh - definitely had that Working Man vibe going on.“

“Small space in an industrial strip. Parking in the lot and on the street. Pretty busy at 4PM on Friday, but it seemed to work out. Decent sized bar up front and barrels serving as tables scattered around. Available beers listed behind the bar as well as on a printed taplist with descriptions. They do flights of 5 for like $7 which is a really good deal. As noted by Borken, you hold on to your little card and they serve the tasters one at a time, crossing them off as you get them. This is good from the standpoint of freshness, but annoying as Borken says when the place is busy and you lose your spot. At least I never had much of a wait to get my next pour. I would note that they were most certainly doing full pours, so whatever licensing problem they had, they don’t have it no more. Service was friendly and both bartenders were smokin’ hot, which is a nice bonus for sure. They also both seemed to have a satisfactory knowledge of craft beer. Beers themselves were of expected high quality, but really hop-focused. Don’t go hear expecting to sample a lot of different styles. This is an APA/IPA house and they don’t often stray far from that equation. Recommended as the best beer in Livermore, potentially the entire sub-580 East Bay.“

“It’s not bad as far as BevMo goes, but it’s not great either. They have all of the typical offerings here that you’d see at any other Bay Area beer store but they do actually get some of the "special" releases from Firestone Walker, Goose Island, and Deschutes and what not. Plus, they’ve got E40 Malt Liquor, son. Can’t beat that...“

“Kind of an upscale BBQ restaurant at the edge of the downtown area of Livermore. Close to Artistic Table, Beer Baron, and Tap 25 as well. Pretty packed on a Sunday afternoon, seems like that is probably the norm. Found a spot at the bar, though. Pretty large restaurant space with some outdoor seating as well.

Didn’t eat anything here, but seemed people were enjoying the food. I’d probably get the burnt ends whenever I’m back as that’s not something you often see. They have a pretty decent beer list, but they advertise maybe half a dozen "house beers" that are brewed by Working Man and I am certain are just rebadges of their existing beers. Plenty of local stuff like Altamont and other east bay breweries, but seemed like maybe a lot of stagnant handles. Prices are maybe a little high.

I’d try to come here during a non-peak time as it was a little too much for me when packed like it was during my initial visit.“

“Small bar with a little patio area out on the street. Kind of dark inside, unfortunately...not a whole lot of natural light even during a nice fall afternoon.

Friendly service and happy to make suggestions or let you taste things. They do flights here, so that is nice as well. Though, they’re a little pricey. Full bar and cocktails in addition to wine and beer.

Beer list is probably the best, or close to it, in the downtown area. Looks like about 30 taps here. Stuff from the local darlings Altamonte as well as things from the greater Bay Area and throughout the state...some other US offerings, too.

Only real complaints here are the darkness, which would appear to diminish the impact of what looks like a nice enough bar, and the prices are definitely a bit on the high side.“

“Kind of your typical neighborhood bar/restaurant place. Pretty packed on a weekend morning, even with what is a rather large space. Big bar, some patio space, and two dining areas.

When I stopped in, the tap list was fairly pedestrian, but a few decent options. Ended up getting a glass of the Sam Adams Grapefruit IPA and just hanging out for a bit watching some football. I’d imagine that a lot of the beers on tap here (macros and big national/regional micros) are permanent fixtures, so maybe not great for the degenerate tickers.

Servers were friendly and prompt, even with the big crowds. A fine place to hang out and grab some food if you’re a local. Wouldn’t say you have to come here if you’re just passing through/visiting.“

“We were having dinner nearby and I overheard the two guys next to me talking to our bartender about a Sour event for SF beer week. Naturally, I asked where, and turns out they were the owner and manager of Beer Baron. We immediately walked over to Beer Baron after finishing up dinner and though we only were able to stay for one round, it is definitely a gem. The list was heavy on FW (2 years of Sucaba, 2 years of Anniversary, etc) after a recent tap takeover, but there are 30 taps, and the majority were stuff I have rarely or never seen on. A nicely re-modeled ex-divey-bar, barn wood walls and barrels. Nicely soft-lit, great service, a good amount of seating for a pretty small joint. Huge wall of Whiskey (100+ different varieites) if that’s your thing. Definitely a place I’ll return to“

“I know this place is under new management now, but I’m not sure if that was before or after t0rin0’s review. Either way, I had a similar experience with the service. I sat at the bar and got my beer really fast, but it took them forever to get back to me for food order. The girl at the bar was nice enough, but she had zero knowledge of the beers. They had four different Eight Bridges and three Altamont beers on along with several other locals, three nitro taps and a couple macros. My burger was very tasty and cooked a solid medium with plenty of juice and pink meat in the middle. They do some pretty interesting burgers here with fancy hipster sounding descriptions, but the decor of the place is more heavy metal. There were lot’s of band posters on the wall and album covers. Very dark inside even at lunchtime. Overall, this isn’t a must stop, but if you’re in Livermore and want a good burger with a local beer, this is the place I would come. The beer selection isn’t quite as good as the Alehouse, but the burgers are a little better.“

“Nice BBQ restaurant in downtown Livermore. Great location right in the middle of things within short walking distance of Beer Baron, Tap 25 and Artistic Table. The BBQ is good and they do some interesting, inventive dishes that keep things fun. There’s also live music on the weekends when it gets packed and VERY loud. The restaurant itself is pretty large and nicely laid out with a decent patio. Lot’s of large screen TV’s for watching sports and what-not. The service has been steadily improving and is always courteous and friendly, but it can get a little slow when they’re really busy. They have about seven house beers that are brewed by Working Man here in Livermore. The beers are decent, but nothing to really write home about. They also have several guest taps with locals like Altamont, Drakes, Faction, Golden Road, etc. not to mention some nice high end whiskeys of which they do flights, but they’re very expensive as you might imagine. Overall, this is a fun place with good food and plenty of whiskey and local beers to enjoy. Recommended.“

As mentioned below, they do have Russian River, which is something that Perry’s does not have. These guys also have some more local beers than some of the bigger stores in the area have (Perry’s, C’s, Bevmo, etc). Prices are decent, the service is friendly, and he had the Niner game playing so there was something to listen to while I browsed the beer fridges. I ended up buying two bottles, both IPAs from a local brewery (Working Man). Sounds like the Pliny and Blind Pig run out very quickly when they come in, which is more or less the case everywhere, but he does get them so feel free to use that knowledge and chase the delivery truck, losers.“

“Visited November 9, 2014.

These guys have a bit of a stigma for importing a bunch of beer only semi-legally. Five years ago it was all the rage (on beeradvocate) to hate on people that did this. Now everyone does it, so some of the popular targets like these guys and Beverages 4 Less are just several of hundreds of stores that do this. Most likely not legal, possibly unethical, but the upside is that you have access to lots of things you’d otherwise have to travel out state or trade for. As mentioned in some other ratings the prices are out of control but I’d be willing to bet that many of the desperate beer nerds that hated on this place still frequent it.

The selection is pretty impressive. There are two rows of shelves and a row of fridges full of beer. I spotted some Tilquin Quetsche and some of the gueuze squared (for $50 lol). Also saw plenty of Cascade (half a dozen different ones), a bunch of Almanac sours, some Bruery society-only stuff, along with Mikkeller, De Molen, and Ale Apothecary. They of course have plenty of legitimate stuff too. All around a great selection but you’ll pay for it.“

Perry’s Liquors (Beer Store)
1522 RAILROAD AVE
“Place is a little less than 2 miles off the 580 in Livermore. Definitely worth stopping in if you’re traveling along that route. Huge selection including a good amount of sours and barrel aged beers from AleSmith, The Bruery, and Almanac among others. The owner was a nice guy who I enjoyed talking to. Overall the prices were not bad, though as previous posters stated, some of the rare beers are expensive. I saw a few $40 offerings. I’m glad I stopped by.“
