New Glarus Beer Guide: Your New Glarus guide to beer, beer bars, breweries and brewpubs

“Worth a visit, though a little underwhelmed by the selection of brews available. Only a handful. Also pretty expensive relative to other breweries. Nice outdoor area and the beer cellar is helpful if you want to bring the beers out of state. The town of New Glarus is nice as well, and you get tokens for brews in area locations that feature their beers.“

“Immaculate location, stunning in all aspects from having a beer outside to a wedding. Probably the coolest location I've seen outside of Hill Farmstead. This place is mammoth on the brewery side and the self guided tour is full of awe. The downside to visiting is that the beers are literally just what you can get at any corner store. Put in some effort. Not worth visiting unless you are coming with a large group to hang out all day, no beer ticking.“

“Awesome venue, built like a Swiss or German alp cottage. Store, gift ahop, pub, with plenty of space, still, can imagine it gets crowded in the summer. Worth the visit for the R&D beer alone but obviously overall an excellent experience.“

“Since I first had their Spotted Cow oh so many years ago in La Crosse I have wanted to visit this Wisconsin landmark for beer. On my cross country journey to Portland I was able to stop and enjoy a few local brews. The day I visited they are still in the middle of construction. Not sure what is going on but they had huge cranes lifting stuff. The operations are house in giant barns which was really cool. Once thing I didn’t like was the tap room. Everyone told me there was one but the day I visited it was either closed or demolished due to construction. They have a large outdoor beer garden and it was here that they had a few taps with their beers. The rest of the properly is a weird mix of architecture and benches. Once you have a beer your an wonder around the property. They have guided tours but you are also allowed to do your own walking tour which is really cool. Beautiful and clean operations on the inside, impressive. Giant bottle shop in the basement of a building that is getting remodeled. Lots of bottles and growler fill station here. I thought the selection for a brewery was lacking. I think it was only 5 or 6 beers with nothing I could find as a pub exclusive which was disappointing. You had to buy the glass but every drink after the first was at a reduced price which was nice but honestly weird about purchasing the glass. Not sure if you can bring them back or always have to buy a new one.“

“I have long waited for the chance to visit New Glarus; I have heard so much. The drive up feels like you are entering beer disneyland indeed. Beautifully manicured grounds, ornate driveway lighting. There is construction at the site so they had two people directing cars to park in a grass lot. Hoofed it the last quarter mile, up a manicured trail through the woods with picnic tables and benches. Beautiful. The grounds are also impressive, although the construction mars an otherwise amazing view. You walk into the courtyard and start to look around. There are signs, but things are kind of, confusing. There are two outdoor bars selling full pours of a half dozen of their most common beers; nothing that I can’t buy at the local grocery store. Inside its mostly souvenirs and bottle sales. Again, nothing beerwise not available elsewhere, and for less money at that. I did not take a tour. In the end I felt pretty let down. Zero beers that are even remotely unique to the site, and as beautiful as it is, it seems like it is more about cash inflow than actually providing a quality beer experience. I left bummed.“

“Holy cheese, Batman! A cool little old Swiss feeling cottage pub with a small bar and small dining area, but they move people through pretty well, even when its busy. Service was great, friendly and attentive, didn’t really test the beer knowledge, but why would you get anything but New Glarus here, of which all of their taps except on were that. Food is awesome, had a cheese fondue that would have been enough food for 4 people, but then we decided to get friend cheese curds and schnitzel, all of which were great. I recommend it for lunch or dinner if you’re stopping by the brewery in the town.“

“Well, it is a beer mecca, and they know it, probably the only thing in the town people actually come from other states to visit. It is super clean, maybe one of the cleanest breweries I’ve ever seen, and they allow self-guided walking tours. The area to hang out is really nice, especially when it’s warm out, which probably isn’t too often. Every employee was super friendly, really helpful, and really seemed to enjoy being there. The selection on draught was decent, a few lagers, the pale, the IIPA, and the raspberry, the bottle shop was even better, with some stuff you can’t find elsewhere. But for the most part you can find everything else cheaper other places in the town and state. It is an incredible place and if you are anywhere near it you should definitely go!“

“Visited on a Tuesday afternoon in the summer. First thought, wow, this is a beautiful brewery. Massive place, hill top location, overlooking the town of New Glarus. Plenty of parking. Small gift shop. Multi level patio in the back built to resemble a German beer garden. Service was enthusiastic and very well informed. Selection consisted of 8 beers on tap and all were excellent. They also sell beers buy the bottle or mix six in the beer depot. Self guided tour. Overall an amazing place, very clean, knowledgeable and friendly staff, and of course excellent beers. Worth a stop if you are in the area.“

“First visit, today. Ehh, can’t really recommend this place. IF you are in the area and want to get NG products slightly cheaper than at the brewery, AND you don’t have the time to go anywhere else, I guess you might stop here - but that’s about it. Not a whole lot else - Goose Island, Founders, maybe a good enough selection for a town this size, but nothing at all special if you were to drive for half an hour most directions to a larger town.“

“Visited during GTMW week for the latest R&D release. Before commenting on the brewery experience I’ll just say that these guys probably run the smoothest beer releases in the country. I was probably 300th in line and had my beer in hand 5 minutes after they started serving customers. The hilltop brewery is a handsome place with sweeping scenic views of the surrounding countryside. There’s a tap room, souvenir shop, and bottle shop for visitors to check out. Beers on tap numbered about 6-8 and included most of the core range in addition to a couple of exclusives. Tall pours of Belgian Red in perfect condition made the drive from Madison worth it. Service was kind and friendly. Overall, this place is a destination brewery for any beer enthusiast. Well worth a long detour.“

“First visited September 4th. This is the second in a fairly new three location chain (the first in Belleville, third I Verona) and it’s really a great addition to the New Glarus food & drink scene. Terrific handmade pizzas using mostly local ingredients, with lots of unusual combinations - we had the William Tell special with pulled pork, sauerkraut and apples. Small interior in an old rehabbed/remodeled railroad station with parking on one side and a bike path on the other; we sat in the large patio area outside.

The beers are unfortunately only bottles, but the selection is large and nearly all craft or imports, and good stuff - lots of New Glarus & Ale Asylum of course, a few more obscure Wisconsin micros, Rochefort, Aventinus, etc. The Verona location which opened just this past spring does have draught beer, so hopefully they will add it here eventually also, though there may be space considerations. In any case if you want a good selection of brew and really great pizza in this area, this is the place.“

“Swung by here as its nearby New Glarus. Ambiance is drab and run down. Only one apple product on offer but I was going to do the full tasting to be nice, but was told it would be twenty minutes to start a new tasting despite a small crowd. I passed. Meh. Just have another pint at the brewery.“

“Four visits over the last three years, most recently in May - and a few more going back to the 90s. Classic "Olde World" charm in the narrow copper-topped bar and wood-walled and floored back restaurant room, the charm is the most notable aspect here. Not that the rest is too shabby, but the food - Swiss/German entrees and sandwiches - is good, not spectacular. The beer? Oh, the beer? You want to know about the beer they’ve got? Why, they’ve got everything - Bud, Miller AND Coors! Nah, just kidding, I think it’s all New Glarus, and it rotates some. They’ve always had one of the extraordinary fruit beers on tap, and you can’t get those everywhere even in southern Wisconsin within an hour of the brewery. Last time is was Raspberry Tart, the time before that Synchronicity (the only time I’ve found that one on tap). Prices are reasonable for the beer and the sizable sandwiches; entrees are pretty expensive and enormous, if you want to be a glutton. IMO if you’re in New Glarus to eat you’re just as well off going to Cow & Quince for lunch, but this is the place to go for beer and ambiance.“

“New review July, 2015: My old review reflects the old brewery, located on the other side of town. The hilltop brewery is a better experience for the beer geek in every way, with a beautiful gift shop and tasting room and just awesome deck with a panoramic view of the valley below. I’ve visited four times in the last three years, most recently twice in the past couple of months to pick up some Zwickel. Obviously for those out of state it’s worth coming for the year-round beers, but even for an in-stater like me there are often these special brewery-only gems. I haven’t taken the tour at this new location yet but I’m sure it’s fairly cool. As some others have mentioned, it would be great if they offered just a little food, but I suppose if they did it would end up encouraging people to stay and making the place more crowded than it already is - sometimes the parking lot is absolutely full, even on weekdays. Anyway, essential.

Original review October, 2006: Did the self-guided tour; would have loved to have gotten one from Dan Carey but I didn’t have a lot of choice as to when I came. It IS a very informative tour, the facility is beautiful and exceptionally clean even for a brewery; I swear you wouldn’t mind eating off of any surface. Very impressed by the gift shop -- they had several different glasses, gift packs, t-shirts, glasses from other breweries (kinda cool) and rubber Holsteins. Yeah the sampler isn’t worth it though if the Raspberry Tart had been from a keg I would’ve had to have sprung for it. Anyway, a good tour for anyone and a must if you love this brewery.“

“Wow, this place is completely over the top. There must be a ton of money in Spotted Cow, because this place must have cost a small fortune to build. It’s impressive but certainly not the cozy brewery tasting room experience that I enjoy. You have to stand in line to get a tasting glass and wrist bracelet with three tear off charms. You then stand in line with your glass to get it filled at the cost of one of the "charms". It’s efficient I guess, but very impersonal. They had six beers on offer, a coujple of which were pretty mediocre. The beer garden tasting area was very pleasant, offering sweeping fews of the Wisconsin country side. I don’t think I will be back.“

“I was there Friday(6/10) for the latest R&D release. Meet a lot of great beer enthusiasts there at 6 in the morning. Around 8 am, Deb Carey came around and walked amongst us and spent time talking beer and asking us questions. I saw her here and there for the 6-7 hours I was there. The release was well organized and fun. The brewery is easy to get around and, in the simplest of words, a beer mecca. Great layout, easy to get around, and a beer court that is worth visiting. Can’t wait to go back.“

“I have been here a few times now and I always look forward to going back. The brewery itself is stunning and the beer here is my favorite of all time. I have never been on a hard hat tour but the self guided tours are nice. They have an ok beer selection on site but I wish they had more rarities as well. The gift shop is nice and the beer garden is amazing in the summertime.“

“In summary, this is how Disney World would make a brewery. It is immaculate, stunningly large and spotlessly clean. There are information placards around for self-guided tours. They have the most pristine brewing facility I have ever seen in over 250 breweries and brewpubs visited around the world. The copper kettles on display are beautiful and fully functional. NG is split into multiple sections among its grounds. First, there is the actual bottle shop where you can buy bottles to go - a lot of them. Cases and cases of their core and seasonal brands. Plus, a hefty number of their fruit beers in 750mL bottles and, if you are lucky, 500mL bottles of their limited releases. Prices are super reasonable. Staff is very nice. There is then a more touristy gift shop that looks straight out of Disney. Lots of glassware, shirts, breweriana, and even cheese. The real "meat" of the NG experience is the courtyard where you have to first wait in line to get your glass and ticket for a beer. Once you pay for your glass and ticket, you have to stand in a second line to get your full pour of beer. The price seems higher, but you get to keep your glass, which is a very nice logo’ed, custom pilsner flute. The facility overall looks like a Little Switzerland from Disney’s Epcot or a village from Magic Kingdom. That isn’t to say it is corny, it just looks too perfect for a brewery. In stark contrast, our visit to Madison’s Capital Brewery that next day, and it was filthy.“

“Visited Friday afternoon before Great Taste. This was my first time here and I did not realize how big New Glarus brewing was. This is a large industrial operation, and the brewery is open to wander through. The outside area is very nice, in the cross of a Swiss village and ruins of a medieval abbey. Terraces and views in several directions. Only four or five beers on, so there is not much selection. Musicians blowing the horns than mountain folk might have used to communicate hundreds of years ago was fun. No food available, given how packed this place is, a simple bratwurst and pretzel stand would be a goldmine. Lots of fun.“

“A beautiful brewery on top of a hill overlooking the town. A bavarian themed brewery with a large beer garten, and indoor drinking space as well as a gift shop and a separate bottle shop. Service is always great and friendly. Happy to talk beer too! Always a good number of beers available on tap and in bottles. Prices a great and they have a vendor come in with a pizza oven for food sometimes. A world class brewery!“

“This is a massive place on a hilltop that dominates the small town beneath it. You pass the old NG brewery on the left as you approach the new brewery, and sours are still brewed at the old facility. The new place has tons of parking, once you navigate the windy road up the hill. Many buildings, each with different functions, so it’s worth poking your head into each one that doesn’t have a "brewers only" sign. You can stroll around the brewery itself, large and impressive. There are several stores, but the highlight is a massive multi-level patio out back with multiple tasting areas, tables, and faux abbey ruins. We visited for an R&D release which was not crowded at all. Very well organized, although that system leaves you with multiple bracelets and indelible ink marks. Tasters of three beers was $8. They allow outside bottles and coolers, so tons of folks were sharing bottles among the tables. Earns its nickname as the Disneyland of Breweries, but in a good way.“

“Although it has a "in the middle of nowhere" reputation, it’s not too hard to find. It’s right off the main road into and out of the town. Coming from the south, the landscape was picturesque even before arriving on the New Glarus Brewing campus / farm. What they did with the driveway was pretty impressive as well - although I could see being terrifying in icy conditions - and very scenic. Parking was ample, the staff was friendly, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. The gift shop and bottle shop where both abundantly stocked and almost overwhelming. You can basically buy whatever beer they’re currently distributing in bottle form from their bottle shop. The samples are prices in groups of three for $3.50, and they’re pretty healthy 3 oz pours - so you can try everything they have on tap without breaking the bank - although be careful because the food options are limited (although I could’ve bought cheese and sausage from the gift shop now that I think of it). There were nine options on tap when I was there, and they were all available for sale in bottle form, plus a few others that weren’t on tap in the sample room. It definitely had a beer wonderland feel to it - a worthwhile stop for the casual tourist or beer adventurer.“

“As far as a brewery experience goes (without doing a "hardhat tour", by the way), this place is pretty awesome. They built the production facility with glass walls everywhere, so you can just walk throught the brewery yourself and look at what is going on everywhere. Going there for an event (to buy R and D Peach) was pretty fun too. Plenty of bottle sharing in line, very well organized, and you could enjoy the outdoor "taproom" afterward. I docked them a couple points for food, because they don’t really offer anything, and when they do, it is pretty limited (only pizza when I was there for the R and D Peach release... it was pretty good pizza, though). New Glarus itself is also cool, but small and sort of a one day thing, but there is plenty of cross-promotion between the businesses there, including the brewery. Overall, I really like it (I’ve been there four times already, and I’m sure I’ll be back plenty more).“

“(Visited 08/2014): Glarner Stube is located on 1st Street in downtown New Glarus. Street parking is available in the surrounding blocks.

The interior is cozy, opening to the bar area, with table seating beyond. Traditional Swiss family restaurant feel to the decor, and a nice collection of old New Glarus bottles behind the bar.

The restaurant features 10 taps, all New Glarus, including Raspberry Tart.

Service at the bar for an early Friday dinner was great. The bartender was courteous and personable throughout our visit.

Food at Glarner Stube is good. My friend and I enjoyed our Meatball and Sausage entrees respectively.

All in all this is a cool little spot to visit near the brewery.“

“(Visited 08/2014): New Glarus is located in beautiful farm country outside of Madison. Parking is available in multiple areas.

The brewery is gigantic and is laid out like a famstead, and and offers both guided and self-guided tours. There is a gift shop and bottle shop, as well as a beer garden which offers a gorgeous view of the surrounding area.

The beer selection in the beer garden included 9 selections, with some more common options as well as Strawberry Rhubarb, There And Back, Belgian Red and Moon Man. There is a token-based system for ordering the beers, and the ones I tried were excellent.

Service at the beer tents and in the stores was good. The bottle shop has all the year-round brews plus seasonals and Thumbprint choices.

New Glarus does not serve food.

All in all this place lived up to and in some ways surpassed my expectations, and I would love to go back again.“

“I love the modern buildings made to look like they were imported from the German countryside. I also love that they put their fermentors into massive buildings made to look like barns. Beer garden area continues to be improved. There is a store near the parking lot - prices are the same or a touch higher than some of the big places in Madison, but you’ll find everything the brewery is currently offering. If you are entering town from the North, be on the lookout for their original brewery (it will be on the left hand side before you reach the little downtown area stoplight). You’ll see the new ’sour cave’ building entrance and their original brewery where they still make their fruit beers and really hoppy beers. There are ’hardhat’ tours available at their original brewery but only on Fridays and they fill up online with reservations really quickly. Tours at the Hilltop Brewery are self-guided, though they often have a staff member stationed somewhere who can answer (some) questions. I really like this place!“

“Street parking, but was not an issue. Stopped in here on a late sunday afternoon for a late lunch. Walked right in a got a table, although it was kind of crowded. It was only about a third full when we left at 3:30 or so. The waitress was at our table pretty quickly and once we had ordered, our food took about 15 minutes. They only had New Glarus on tap and it was moslty the regular lineup with a couple seasonals. We used our free taster from the brewery here, and got two six ounce glasses. It was cool to have Moon Man on tap. Stuck to water afterward though, as we had a pretty long drive ahead of us. The food was swiss and was pretty good. Massive quantities and you paid for it. $60+ for two meals. Unfortunately the leftovers we took ended up not being very good. Much better fresh. I ended up throwing the leftovers away. Probably wouldn’t stop in again.“

“Stopped in here on a Sunday afternoon after stopping at New Glarus. They had a smaller quantity of New Glarus here, but the variety was more diverse. They had some of the last few seasonals still around and I could build a mixed six pack or buy individual bottles. Prices were a little better than at New Glarus as well. I didn’t actually see any employees until I checked out, which is fine. While checking out, they two employees I saw were both very friendly and mentioned that I could build a whole six pack if I wanted, since I only had two individual bottles plus some six packs and some big bottles. Very friendly. On a bit of a side note, I was kind of hoping to find some local cheese here, but didn’t have much luck. Maybe I just missed it.“

“Stopped in about noon on a Sunday and the parking lot was only about a quarter full. Unfortunately, getting there was a bit difficult and required some guess work. The GPS didn’t know the address existed. Fortunately, the route it sent us on made us drive right by the hill it’s located on, so we were able to guess where to turn off. You have to go up a winding road to the top of a hill to get here, but once you are up to the top, it’s a beautiful place. It has an old timey European farmhouse feel to it. Lot’s of stonework and wood on the outside. As you go in, you can hit the tap room, the merchandise room, or the bottle room. I recommend hitting the tap room first, then take the self guided tour of the facility as you drink, and then hit up the merch and then the bottles. The merch store has a lot of fun stuff. I ended up getting a t shirt, some stickers, and a sweet pilsener glass. I could have really loaded up here if money was no object. The self guided tour was fun and I got some cool pictures of the operation. The big copper kettles are really impressive. The bottle shop in the bottom has a lot of their beers to offer. I got about a case of stuff from here. If ever I am passing through here again, I will definitely want to stop back in just to see what’s new.“

Otherwise, the fruit 750s were 20 cents cheaper and everything else the same. However, Roy’s did have 4 or 5 12oz bottles set aside as singles. “Visited on the way from Chicago to The House on the Rock. Beautiful brewery on beautiful grounds. Everything is so new and clean, which you get to see on your self guided tour. The outdoor area is really worth a view, set up like old ruins overlooking some nice scenery. The gift shop had lots of swag and prices were hefty. You can do a tasting for 3.50, you get 4 samples and get to keep the sampling glass. Nothing all that special on tap basic stuff and Serendipity. The store had lots of regular beer, the Anniversary 500mL, 2 fruit beers. Prices were similar to everywhere else in Madison. “Visited twice now, once in 2011 and once on the way to GTMW this year (August 9, 2013).

This place is really cool, even if you don’t like their beer. They have somewhat of a castle on top of a hill. They finally paved the road that leads up to it but it’s still kind of remote and rustic. Inside is both a humungous brewery (they actually just added a whole other building for more fermenters) that you can take a self guided tour of and a gift shop. They have at least a dozen different types of glasses for sale, if you’re into collecting glassware. Outside they’ve done some work and have built some ruins down the side of the hill. They have a bar too of course. You have to buy the glass the first time for an extra dollar. Fills are kind of expensive, as is the merchandise, but I guess I can’t complain about being able to get pints of Serendipity on tap. Below the building is a bottle shop. You can buy individual bottles or you can buy cases (they have case discounts). They also have a truck come out that does brick oven pizzas. Really cool place to hang out but know that they respect their distributors and mark the beer up more at the brewery. Go to the gas station down the street if you want to buy the beer cheaper.“

“New,nice, being developed, big, comfortable, scenic somewhat, good vibe, loved the visit will do again soon. Cute little switzerland town. Would have liked to have more selection. Especially some of the specialty/ seasonals which I could find of more in their local stores.Great potential and will like to see it grow into the beautiful thing it will become in a few more years.“

“Beer Heaven on Earth. Overlooking a valley of beautiful rolling hills of Wisconsin farmlands. 75 degrees of perfect sun, fluffy clouds, a gentle breeze. Wild grass and flowers sway, butterflies dance, birds sing. All is right in the world as you enjoy a fresh New Glarus draft. I could go on but dont need to... Belongs on every beer lovers Bucket List.“

“Beautiful countryside setting up on a hill overlooking the valley. Staff were all very friendly and helpful. Dan the brewmaster was even out and about chatting with folks. Your is self guided and small. Samplings available. Great outdoor area to sit and have a few pints. Samples of full pints are a little pricy but not outrageous.“

“About 30 miles south of Madison, New Glarus is worth the drive. Self-guided tour that is somewhat lacking. Tour is no charge. You can sample 3 beers for $3.50 and keep the glass. The samples are available in the gift shop. Current beers are available in the "depot". Expansion is going on. Very clean and modern facility. First class operation,.“

“Visited around the noon hour on the day before July 4th. I love what the company’s going for in this quasi- "mountain"-side Swiss-German chalet. The self-guided tour highlights an amazingly clean, modern and ship-shape brewing operation. The tasting room itself wasn’t open this day, but they were offering tasters out of the gift shop, which was fine by me. Great value in their sampler options with a glass thrown in, but they only had about 6 of their beers. Nice outside patio (a work in progress) with a nice view of the hilly Wisconsin countryside. They sell a few chessy snacks, or you can bring your own. Nice place. (Brewery #607)“

“While it is a beautiful brewery, there are some problems I saw. First off, me and the lady get in there and ask about a tour. The tasting lady says "well, just go ahead and walk around." This is fine for me, but for someone who is looking for a "tour", not so good. The "tasting" was less of a tasting and more of a bar. 3 samples for $3.50 or one large beer for $5-8, depending on beer. No one to tell us about what we were tasting, more of "get your beer and move on". Only 5 brews on tap, all of which I have had. Value is there, because the "tour" was free. Overall, meh. This place makes such good beer, I was really hoping for a better tour.“
