74 /100 THE ENGINEERS HOUSE, RIVERSIDE
“The House itself is rather modest and has two two rooms that are accessible to the public, each with a handful of restaurant tables and a small fireplace but no bar. The grounds are sprawling, on the river next to the Cambridge Museum of Technology. There is a long serving bar and a pizza oven, a large tent with little ventilation, and a clutch of picnic tables that overlook the river; the picnic tables are the place to be. Outside toilets too, like the pubs of yesteryear (and sometimes this year). The beer list is a smaller version of the one at the brewery taproom near Mill Road, but since each place is usually out of something, you might see a minor difference. Worth stopping by in good weather; but even in bad weather, indoor seating is pleasant enough.“

“It was a bit strange to try Thai food with minimal to no spice and absolutely no heat whatsoever (I forgot to ask), but even accounting for the=at, the food was just OK. Beers were not much better, 100% Eagle formerly Wells. A bit weird that nearly every table had a Reserved sign on it when they opened at 17:00, even though only one or two couples came by over the next hour or so; this caused casual drinkers and diners to crowd around the bar or mill about nonchalantly amongst the empty tables. Strange place.“

“Wow, I’m kind of surprised to find this place on here. It’s ok but not really a beer pub. Situated on Newmarket Road not far from the Retail Park, it’s a fairly spit and sawdust Greene King outfit. IPA plus two guests, both of which carried a ’Britannia’ theme. I’m hoping this is because of the upcoming election or the WC qualifiers and not because they’re left over from St Georges Day. Anyway, the piped music is ok, the menu looks tasty, and they do have Nanny State if that counts as craft. Not one to avoid per se but I wouldn’t go out of my way.“

“This place is part pub, part Thai restaurant, but the drinkers and eaters are all in the same large room, which is interesting and kind of fun. There are sometimes interesting beers here as they do change their guests fairly regularly, but more often than not you are not going to find anything new. I haven’t eaten here for a fair while, but last time I came in here, bar the kids menu and a couple other choices, the food was not for those with weak tongues or stomachs, it is HOT! Manager and staff always friendly and welcoming, but often focused more on the food than the beer.“

“This is a rather large pub with offers a number of options on cask, both Milton and guest, and a bottle/can selection of craft IPAs and a couple of Belgians. Staff are laid back but helpful, and the pizza is great. This pub appears to be on the up and up despite it’s location far from the centre of town. As an added bonus, dogs are allowed inside the pub.“

72 /100 355 MILTON ROAD
“Imposing pub to the north of Cambridge proper and within spitting distance of the Science Park, the Golden Hind is disappointingly identikit inside but still manages to be a cut and a half above the average Greene King pub. There are about eight cask ales. Ok, two are from Cottage and they are all sessionable strength, but you’ll likely bag a couple of ticks. Not all that much on keg, but you’ll find a decent if predictable (BrewDog, Duvel, Liefmans, Erdinger) bottle selection. Surprisingly decent and certainly worth a stop, although it’s in an awkward area so you’re unlikely to come here.“

“A typical Greene King pub, worth going to for decent food and the ability to sit in the pub garden overlooking the river (across the road from the pub building). Not worth visiting for an interesting beer selection or to try something new.“

“Fairly roomy pub that on the inside felt a bit run-down and ’dive’ like, but the outside area is super nice. Large benches, room to play for the kids, speedy and friendly service. I love the pizza, certainly get that when you end up here! Desserts were decent enough. Good prices too. The Milton beers I was less a fan of as the English themselves seem to be, but served in excellent way. As a tourist there was plenty new beers to try. Good pub!“

“Really surprised this isn’t in here yet. Well it is now. Cracker of a Milton’s Pub in Chesterton, the Haymakers offers incredible cask beer, plus a few ciders. Larger and slightly louder that its city centre cousin , the Devonshire Arms. You also can’t fault the beer: four Milton’s, 3-4 guests, and four ciders. A handful of craft (BrewDog, Flying Dog) round off the experience. As is the case with most Milton’s pubs, prices are very reasonable. Live music nights feature often. Worth the trek up from town.“

“Greene King pub with Greene King beers. Closest thing to craft is Guinness. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a lovely building, food smells good and decent value by Cambridge standards. But with no craft keg/bottles and only GK IPA, Ruddle’s Best, Abbot and the GK house beer, it’s clear that the Green Dragon doesn’t cater to us beery types. Gets crowded quickly as well.“
