“Local CAMRA pub of the year in 2010, this pub offers a welcome that belies the austere nature of the rough end of Alston. Four regularly changing local real ales are offered, along with 4 different changing ciders and perries (served from a jug). The trophies, momentoes, personal ads and notices scattered around the walls show this is a true community local, and yet it couldn’t have offered us southerners a warmer welcome. The food is pub grub, but portions are huge and well cooked, use local ingredients and are served by a hilariously dark-humoured waitress. There’s also a blackboard offering a choice of six local cheeses! There are good views of the Pennines from the windows, and when (always) the weather’s too bad to see the hills, hopefully you’ll be able to watch quoits or football on the pitches below. A top notch local, well worthy of its awards - if more pubs were like this, I suspect the rate of pub closures would be far lower.“
