“A large L-shaped bar with 12 cask ales and a few keg beers. A very well kept traditional pub with a wonderful patio to the right hand side of the corner pub, and in front of the barn where the microbrewery, Resting Devil, is located. On my stay they had three cask ales and one keg beer from the microbrewery, all of them in good condition. Excellent service from a helpful barmaid offering tasters of their beers and telling me about the microbrewery. 10 to 15 minutes walk from the train station. (Visited 08.07.2022)“

“Visited 12/7/2021. Called in on the way through to High Peak area where we are staying for a few days. Nicely set up, a short distance outside the centre of town on a small industrial estate. You can’t mistake which units are theirs, with all the casks neatly stacked outside. Easy parking. Brewery takes up one unit with their cellar shop next door. Mainly it’s their own beers for sale plus a few others, Belgian etc and a couple of ciders. They had 14 different beers of their own. Mixed dozen was £27.50 or something like that, then bought the odd 2 others as singles. Warmly welcomed. Definitely worth a stop if passing through Chesterfield.“

“Visited with the wife at 21:30 Thursday 27th May 2021. Real Ale and Real Food sort of place, liked it. 8? Hand pulls and a few keg lines. Found two new rates and was given a free chip butty as it was 'Quiz Night'. friendly staff and customers.“

“This is a large, opened up pub, modernised but still very comfortable. There is a central bar with seating all the way through. Good service on our visit, clean and tidy. There is a large choice of beers on both hand pull and keg. A little out of town but well worth a visit.“

“This is a tight but well set up cafe cum bar in the centre of Chesterfield, there is an upstairs area too. There were 4 kegs on sale during our visit with a couple of interesting options. It's worth having a quick look if nearby.“

“This is a really busy Wetherspoons as it is close to the Chesterfield street markets so really popular for its breakfasts. It feels like it is worn to the bone, the staff struggle to cope with clearing up, sticky threadbare carpets and tables with wonky legs all crammed in. It is a hotel upstairs and is a mock Tudor building outside. It is what it is but not one I would hurry back to. The beer range was disappointing with few worth trying.“

“Facing the historic spire, this food and drink venue is in a large grand room with a wide staircase at one side, this is a plush drinking venue with 10 cask ale pumps on the bar which covers most of the back wall and has local options alongside crafted brews from further afield. Traditional in design with a mostly wooden decor and furniture, the front area is defined with a carpet and includes some classic leather sofas. Bright and airy with lots of windows, there's also a nice enough patio section at one side, although this connects to a local car park so isn't quite as pretty as the view across to the famous church.“

“Between the Brampton Brewery and the Barlow Tap, this large pub in the Brampton area is a conversion of an older pub, still retaining traditional touches, but is a modern craft ales venue now, also serving food. Open plan, it's a large airy room with the bar central to proceedings. There's a small patio area at the rear to enjoy one of the many cask ales here on ten hand pumps (2 were real ciders), with a regular presence from Peak Brewery over the first few pulls, or the twelve keg ales on the backboard behind the aforementioned.“

“Opposite the Spa Vaults, this is a modern design late night style venue with half a dozen cask ales on the long bar against the back wall. Only three were available, with one from Theakston and a couple of guests -- not that exciting, but I found something local and new to me here. There's a restaurant upstairs in what is an open plan design between the two.“

“A middle terrace pub a half dozen addresses along from the entrance to the Brampton Brewery and shop. Traditional with a smart decor and design, it's a twin roomed pub now made all open plan with the bar in the middle of the right hand wall. 8 cask pumps included 3 from the brewery that own it, with five worthwhile guests available here too.“

“In the alleyways of the buildings directly east of the main market square, this markets itself as the oldest pub in Chesterfield, and it has a classic traditional design, has two separate sides served by the same split-level central service area. Despite it being old it's certainly had a makeover or two through the ages but it's still atmospheric enough. There's half a dozen cask ales here, but nothing too exciting - the most being a current special from Banks's Brewery.“

“Opposite the Social Cafe, and backing on to the church with its crooked spire, the owner of one of the places I was in earlier warned me that it had just changed hands and the beer selection had become bland. He was correct, and even though it had a long row of cask ale pumps, all were regular brews you often see up and down the country - fine if it's what the clientele want, but an out of town visitor like myself preferred to see something seldom seen outside the local area. A traditional urban pub in design, but nothing spectacular.“

“Town centre shop unit coffee shop with beers opposite the Rutland pub. The area downstairs is small with a couple of tables by the window and one before you get to the service area. Here there's a small four pump keg dispenser on the side of the bar, with three crafted brews and a craft cider (from Hogans on my visit) - strength range was between 4% - 6.5%. The owner was present and got chatting, he would like to put cask in but is not sure if it will sell yet. He has a number of bottles and cans from microbrewers available and all are present on the back wall. There's an upstairs here with more room available to sit and sup than the ground floor.“

“Visited on a market day, although this pub faces into the less busy of the two squares in this respect. It has a couple of tables out front facing the stalls, with a very pleasant traditional decor on the inside. There's a long row of cask ales at the side of the centrally located bar, although it had many regular ales from local microbreweries that are often seen in this part of the world alongside a couple of national ones such as Greene King Abbot Ale, but it's always a beautiful sight to walk into a place with 10 cask pumps all in a row in a public house. Keg brews are all macro and food seems to play a key part in the success of this place.“

“Corner pub on the road directly north-west from the town centre, past a Muslim centre and classic church both side by side. It's walkable and worthwhile given there's about a dozen real ales and real ciders from local microbreweries (and beyond) on its centrally located bar in an open plan traditional pub with a very good finish to its decor. There's a garden area too on the suburban side road part of the pub.“

“Shop unit conversion just a few minutes walk west of the large freestanding Wetherspoon pub by the market places - basically where suburbia begins on this side of the town centre. It's split level on its ground floor, with the bar on the rear upper part, with the lower seating area something of a cramped sun trap. There's another room upstairs though, which looks like a working man's club in design and furniture. Another room exists up here but has not been expanded into at the time of writing. This micropub has half a dozen cask ales on the bar, all from microbreweries local and beyond, with a greater selection of keg ales, again from micros on a backboard. These can be ordered in thirds as there's some strong stuff available on them.“

62 /100 UNITS 4 & 5 CHATSWORTH BUSINESS PARK, CHATSWORTH ROAD
“One of the first units in an industrial park off the main road west out of the town centre, just before the brewery's own public house. It's a busy office with shelving units on the right after you enter. Their own beer only represents a small percentage of what's available, which includes some well known Belgian efforts, but what is there from their own selection includes seasonals and specials alongside the regulars.“

“One of the closest city centre bars to the railway station, which is just down the hill below, but one of the more disappointing of the dozen places visited on a trip to the town. Has a couple of cask ales, a bland set of keg brews, but a couple of draught German imports which may please some. A large modern open plan venue with its bar on the right after you walk in.“

“Visited on Friday 5th February 2016. Bustling town centre German themed bar/restaurant. Decor is cocktail lounge chic, music was playing but not too loud, relaxed crowd, we sat in the dining room which was at the rear and pretty quite. 3 handpulls with local beers, a selection of keg beers including a few from the Bitburger stable and not that good. However the hidden gem is the bottle list which has a good selection of European beers plus a few from different countries. I picked up Laos and Cyprus beers. Prices were pretty good too. It’s a fun place and a handy stop. Be interested in others views, especially during a day time visit.“

“To the northwest of the town centre but within walking distance. The Chesterfield Arms has a couple of craft keg and a smattering of bottles, but the selling point is the cask ale - I counted 12 on handpull - and the six still ciders. Beers are mainly sessionable strength, ranging from 3.8% to 5.5%, although 3 of the 12 are >5%. Two of the Ashover ales on. I tried one, OK brew in good condition. I dig the tartan plaid carpet and the old-fashioned wallpaper, but could do without the loud music (even if it’s classic hard rock). Feels a trifle cliquey as well, but I can live with that.“

“Big things often come in small packages, few more so than an excellent micropub such as this. And ’micro’ it is. You’d be hard-pressed to fit more than a dozen customers downstairs, although there’s extra seating upstairs. The beer list is impressive indeed. Six real ales (three of which are 5% or over), a handful of ciders & perries, and a healthy and varied selection of US, UK and Belgian craft in bottles and cans. The US and Belgian lists consist mostly of the usual suspects, but the UK list includes superstars such as Alchemy, Hardknott, Buxton and Beavertown. Don’t miss it.“

“Micropub. 6 handpumps + cider + about 15 well chosen bottles. On our visit 4 of the 6 draught beers were Locale, from Raw & Stancil breweries amongst others, and there were a couple of Acorn beers available as well. Could happily have stayed for longer. Visited early afternoon Sunday 02 August.“

“Excellent ale is assured when you visit this , Chesterfield’s 1st micropub. An old shop has now become 1 of the best places to drink quiality ales in Chesterfield. 6 hand pumps dispense an ever changing range. 3 pale ales, 1 bitter , 1 dark and a random are always on top form. Great bar.“

“The Rutland Arms is easy to find as it’s right next to the church with the crooked spire. It was rather quiet when I visited but I imagine it can be quite foody. There’s lots of wood panelling and it’s cosy, with friendly service, even if the fires aren’t lit and the beer selection isn’t overly exciting. There are six to eight hand pumps. “A very nice brewpub, with several different areas and a good range of beer, including their own Brown Ales and guests - twelve hand pumps and four keg taps plus five or more ciders, with rapid rotation according to the friendly barman. Well worth visiting. (Visited 12 February 2015).“

“The Chesterfield Alehouse is in an old shop on the way out of town, just before Clarence Road (and from here it’s an easy 10 minute walk up to the Chesterfield Arms). It’s quite small but there is another room upstairs. There’s a really good selection of six casks plus quite a few ciders and nothing among them I wouldn’t have been happy to drink. What’s on or coming soon is listed on the website and the barman (owner?) was very friendly, helpful and interesting to chat to. The Alehouse isn’t in the Good Beer Guide yet as it hasn’t been open long enough but it surely should be listed there soon. Highly recommended. (Visited 12 February 2015).“

“A large, late Victorian building that was once the terminus for the city centre railway station (alas no longer there), the Portland Hotel has been thoroughly spoonified inside. “The Royal Oak is tucked away down an alleyway (it actually fronts onto two alleys in the area known as the Shambles, close to the market square). It has a local feel and wasn’t too busy, even on a market day. There are two bars with different beers on in each - about seven casks in all and not the most exciting beer list I’ve seen. “A popular eating and watering hole on the smaller of the two market squares, very busy with a well heeled crowd around lunch time. “Visited early doors on 20th Nov 2014. Outside it looks like a Tudor building, top floor all black and white, inside it is retro with curves and such along the bar and ceiling. My two half-pints were tired and not in great condition, but I was most likely the first person to have anything out of either pump that day, so a bit unfair of me to put the place down for that: but I have! Interesting cask selection from around the country, no local stuff though. Just two lads behind the bar, mostly pulling coffee’s and cutting cake: it was 11:00 am. The chap that served me was fine and friendly enough, just too busy to enjoy his work fully or converse with his customers. I tried to like the place, but I failed.“

“Large Spoon’s Lodge. Seemed like a ’Darby and Joan club’ on my pre-lunchtime visit on 20th Nov 2014. Full of pensioners drinking tea or coffee. Anyway, it is light and airy: the huge single room, split level with tables everywhere. Leaded windows with blue walls and white ceilings, has it’s toilets downstairs. Nice picture and piece about ’Geoff Capes’ on the stairs going down, a local lad apparently. I only had one pint, it was fine and the cask selection was impressive with plenty of local beers available.. Usual problem with staff shortages, not helped by most customers wanting hot drinks rather than something from the bar!“

“Spent a very pleasant two hours in here over lunchtime on 20th Nov 2014. Converted shop: ground/street level seating area, a small flight of stairs takes you to the six hand-pulls, a further set of stairs elevates you to a comfortable lounge and the toilets. Friendly and knowledgeable bar staff: it will be one of the two joint owners who serves you. We talked beer and bollocks for the whole time I was in there, it was quiet customer wise though. My first ’micropub’ and I like the concept. This one has a few bottles to supplement their ever changing cask selection of three bitters, one always below 4.0% ABV: then there are the three others, a strong brew, a dark beer and a surprise/strange beer. On my visit the dark beer was a Porter and the ’surprise’ was Lincoln Green’s Buttermuch. I tried five halves while chatting and all were in fine order. I hope the place does well, it certainly should with the quality and selection I saw on my little session.“

“Quite an imposing community pub, just a short trot outside of the main town centre, part of the Everards project William scheme. There are usually 3 of their own beers available then a further 9 Real Ales plus craft kegs and bottles, not tried. Quiet and relaxed on my visit, but apparently the Landlord is a card.
