“I could say that I’ve been visiting this place for over 40 years ! It’s just up the hill from where my grandmother used to live and I remember visiting it in the late 1970s, when it was a typical “spit and sawdust” back street boozer – it’s very different today ! It’s down a fairly steep street from the main road in Littleover (though it is on a bus route). It is genuinely old - though maybe not as old as the black and white frontage would suggest. Entering from the front, you have to perform a couple of 90 degree turns to get past the doorway. Once you do, you are in the “sports bar” half of this split personality pub – with the bar straight ahead. This half is bright and airy with large-screen TVs all over. Seating is varied from comfy sofas to high stools. Round the corner and up a couple of steps is the other half – which is dedicated to diners. AS for the beer – well it’s a Greene King pub, Jim – but not as we know it ! There are half-a-dozen handpumps in the main bar, which do include a couple of GK beers, but the others are all guests, often from small local breweries such as Littleover and Heritage. There are another six handpumps in the dining area, but I think these are mostly duplicates and may be only for show. Food is available at all times except mid-afternoon weekdays and Sunday evenings. It is best described as “good hearty fayre”, and the portions are enormous. Even the “lite bites” are a large plateful. Prices are very reasonable too. [ Of course that means, that it takes a good while to get served ] Whilst by no means simply a dining pub, the meals are VERY popular – you are recommended to book in advance. [ Last time, I arrived 15 mins after opening time on a Thursday to find all the tables were occupied. I had to wait for a fast-eating regular to finish ! ] I really like this place – it’s got something to please just about everyone. Even obsessive tickers might find a thing or two ! “
