62 /100 Joiners Arms (Bar) 6 MARKET PLACE I visited on a Sunday afternoon and was surprised to find this place rather busy - due to a an open mic night. Music was a rather entertaining mix between from metal though to blues! They had 3 cask ales including some local stuff and a bag in box cider on the bar. Pretty much as good of a selection as you could get in town. Rather liked the atmosphere that was on offer. A solid local boozer with a good community vibe. |
58 /100 Rose Salterne (JDW) (Bar) 9 - 10 BRIDGELAND STREET The Rose Salterne is a fairly classique small town Spoons. Outside it ain’t a looker, but inside is a bit more modern. Plenty of outside seating with locals vaping to the max. Inside it is surprisingly large and pretty busy to be honest. Quite a few hand pumps, but not a wide selection- perhaps 6 cask ales which thankfully included an international collab. Standard bottles on offer and also some bag in box ciders, which didn’t include anything local unfortunately. A nice enough Spoons inside, but let down by a sub-standard selection. Not bad. |
56 /100 Appledore Inn (Bar) 18 CHINGSWELL STREET A rather handsome looking pub in Bideford. Inside feels a bit more like a lounge bar with a laid-back atmosphere and slightly older/classier clientele than some others in town. Had a few cask ales on hand pull including one from a local brewery. Well kept beer and nice service. Not exactly a place to pick up much new beers, but a nice enough place anyhow. |
60 /100 36 MILL STREET The name Ale and Cider house is perhaps suggesting the pub has a wider selection than it actually does, but saying that it is one of the best venues in Bideford. Fairly centrally located, but a couple of streets away from the water front. The interior is a bit old school, but clean. ‘Twas busy when I visited on Sunday afternoon. They offer 3 cask ales which were all Country life on my visit and 1 cask cider which was disappointingly from thatchers, as well as some fizzy stuff. Bottled selection includes 5 or so real ales. Super friendly service. Ok overall. |
42 /100 Heavitree Arms (Bar) 16A MILL STREET Can’t decide whether Heavitree looks nice and traditional from the outside or scary, maybe the latter. Inside it is most definitely a local boozer and can’t say I was made welcome by the locals, but the barman was nice enough. Not much on offer other than 2 cask ales - one was an Otter ale with a Bude on the side. Yeah it is pretty cheap, but there are better places to drink in town. |
52 /100 Quenchers (Beer Store) 15 CHINGSWELL STREET There aren’t a whole lot of options to pick for local real ale and ciders in Bideford, but they can be found in Quenchers. It is a centrally located off-license with a couple of shelves of local breweries and Ciders from Devon and Cornwall. No frills that’s for sure, but worth swinging past if you happen to be here. Friendly staff. Good selection of tonic wines if that’s your thing.... |
