58 /100 BrewDog Exeter (Bar) UNIT 21A GUILDHALL SHOPPING CENTRE We had to walk through here from the car park as there wasn't any clear way out to the street via the shopping centre without venturing deep within the shopping centre. It's a two level BD, looks much the same as any other, with a tap list much like any other. My feelings towards Brewdog have changed a lot over the years, and stepping in one of their bars feels like stepping into my teenage bedroom. Cringeworthy, out-dated with a rebellious air that we're all tired of now. Bottle selection was excellent, but like their draft, was hugely over-priced so may as well not exist. |
90 /100 Pullo (Beer Store) 137 FORE STREET Lovely little shop specialising in fine wine, fine cheese and fine cider. No beer. Staffed by someone genuinely passionate and knowledgeable about his wares. Ariel Pink on the stereo. We were quite taken by the 75cl ciders on display, not an overly huge amount but certainly a very well considered range with some of the best independent, and lesser spotted, producers around. Some bottles from Spain, Germany, USA, Scotland and further afield. We had a jolly good chat with the owner who was happy to talk about each bottle, and left with a good box full. Prices quite reasonable. |
70 /100 202 HIGH STREET Stumbled on this place walking through town. The name rang a bell so went in to check the tap-list, only to see some brewing equipment and FVs behind glass panels next to the bar. Sure enough, there are 4 cask handpulls of their own beer, plus a keg lager & IPA, and some guests. I got a flight of 3 thirds (couldn't buy a third by itself). Cask were a touch watery and flat, IPA was excellent. A few box ciders, but unrefrigerated, so served room temperature unfortunately. Didn't really come across as a brewpub, presenting itself as a kind of Greene King / Fullers city centre pub with plenty of olde character and history. Food offering is focussed on a hipster fried chicken type menu, which seemed popular. Got the impression most customers were here for the pub atmosphere rather than being in a brewpub. Decent stop overall. |
72 /100 25 PARIS STREET Brief visit on our way out of town. This was on my radar as wanted to try their own beer, brewed under the Whyte Bar moniker, but unfortunately despite a Whyte Bar Brewery poster on the wall, and shirts to buy, no beer was available on draft or in can. There was however 7 beers on the blackboard from UK breweries and two upright fridges with a standard range of cans, some US imports. It's a converted shop, bar at the back, standard wooden tables, basic feel. There's a small upstairs room, and up two flights of stairs a fair trek away is the toilet. Despite that it's worth a look if it's modern craft you're after, though didn't seem to spot much from South West breweries. Overheard the owner saying he was (somewhat ambitiously) hoping to ask a large Polish brewery to make their beer and distribute it across Europe. For now, it seems there's not much activity on that front. |
80 /100 Hops and Crafts (Beer Store) MCCOYS ARCADE, FORE STREET As others have quite rightly pointed out, this is situated at the front of a small shopping arcade, along a street laden with all kinds of independent shops, hip coffee shops etc.. Very small place with a very focussed, specialist range. Beer geeks will note the key Belgian brewers such as De Struise, De Dolle as well as some choice American offerings from the likes of Side Project with a hefty price tag (£75 anyone?). I was in the market for some local beers and left with a handful of cans and bottles including a couple new to me. Owner was friendly and happy to guide my purchases. Nice little place. |
80 /100 CORN EXCHANGE, MARKET STREET The venue is centrally located in the city. It's a one room affair. 60+ beers on cask plus 10 or so bag in box ciders. A decent blend of local beers plus some from further afield. Visited 2023 & 2024. |
66 /100 202 HIGH STREET Visited in August '23. Large bar / brewpub in the center of Exeter, multiple levels. Looks like your usual larger English pub. Ordered a taster tray. Beers were meh to decent, service at the bar OK. Some canned craft beers available as well. Nice enough bar, but didn't get the feeling the beers were the main focus. |
70 /100 COWLEY BRIDGE ROAD I had previously visited year's ago on a Saturday lunchtime when only the small bottle shop was open, but noted that the Brewery taproom, located in the back of the building was open every Thursday & Friday from 5pm. A real locals venue and well worth a visit. Choice of 5 casks plus 4 keg options, a couple new to me. |
70 /100 EXWICK ROAD A nice walk along the river to this Thatched pub. Winter mid week opening hours are from 5pm. Friendly service. A number of well kept cask options new to me. Interesting photos & newspaper articles up on the wall |
62 /100 BONHAY ROAD Fantastic riverside location for a pub only a short distance from the city centre. Choice of a few cask ales, 1 which was new to me. Reasonably busy on a winter's Thursday late afternoon |
78 /100 25 PARIS STREET A taproom well worth a visit, a short distance from the bus station. Very busy on the Wednesday evening I visited, luckily found space upstairs. Choice of around 10 kegs & 2 cask. Good selection in the fridges. |
78 /100 Hops and Crafts (Beer Store) MCCOYS ARCADE, FORE STREET A very well stocked beer shop in a arcade. I found a number of new beers from Devon & the rest of the UK. Noticed there was a good selection from Germany & Belgium. Good service |
72 /100 Little Drop of Poison (Bar) 154 FORE STREET Rough around the edges pub with a good choice of kegged options from other parts of the UK and from breweries I'd not come across before. Only one cask option. |
76 /100 1-2 MACLAINES WAREHOUSE, HAVEN ROAD A must visit taproom next to the river serving there own changing kegged ales, plus some guests. Relatively busy on a late weekday afternoon |
68 /100 38 SOUTH STREET Definitely worth a visit if your nearby, it's a wonderfully converted chapel on the south side of the city. The usual range of JDW cask's, plus a couple of Devon guest ales |
64 /100 Hour Glass Inn (Bar) 21 MELBOURNE STREET A small multi room pub which is tied to Exeter Brewery, with most of their core range available. |
74 /100 202 HIGH STREET A worthy first stop in Exeter, right in the city centre. Large historic pub spread over 3 levels, brew kit on display besides main bar, a good choice of cask & keg, which seem to change occasionally. |
62 /100 BrewDog Exeter (Bar) UNIT 21A GUILDHALL SHOPPING CENTRE Same as any other Brewdog but you can’t complain. Modern, tidy, nice ambiance, nice selection of Brewdog and guest beers.
Food was delicious and very accommodating of my 3 year old. The kids meals are great. |
78 /100 Hops and Crafts (Beer Store) MCCOYS ARCADE, FORE STREET Small beer shop at the front of the arcade. Friendly knowledgeable service. Great selection of beers |
68 /100 Imperial (JDW) (Bar) NEW NORTH ROAD Great looking Spoons. Make sure you go yo the very end with one wall completely made out of glass and iron. Lots of taps and some boced ciders. Best Spoons in Exeter. |
60 /100 Chevalier Inn (JDW) (Bar) 81-82 FORE STREET 3 storey Spoons with a roof garden and log fire. 2.39 a pint. Fee WiFi. Very central. |
70 /100 Samuel Jones (St. Austell) (Restaurant) 37 COMMERCIAL ROAD A converted warehouse pub close to the River Exe. Cosy inside. Food is a big part of the offering here. The beer range is the usual St Austell range, I had a decent pint of Proper Job. It'll never be a tickers destination but it's a nice pub all the same. |
76 /100 1-2 MACLAINES WAREHOUSE, HAVEN ROAD Atmospheric taproom in an old stone barn next to the river. Doing brisk business late on a Saturday afternoon. 3 cask plus 8-10 keg lines pouring, a decent range available of mostly local beers (not all from the brewery itself). I saw some tasty looking pizzas coming out of the kitchen. |
78 /100 25 PARIS STREET Nice place with a friendly atmosphere. Around 10 keg lines pouring, some local and some from further afield. Fair selection of cans & bottles in the fridge. |
66 /100 Little Drop of Poison (Bar) 154 FORE STREET Nice pub in the lower half of town. Fair range of local beers. But not so many customers late on a Saturday afternoon. |
76 /100 Hops and Crafts (Beer Store) MCCOYS ARCADE, FORE STREET MrsSHIG suggested we stop at a few beer stores on the way back from our Cornwall holiday trip. This one was one that caught our eye, although the owner had to come in a little late it was worth the wait. Lots of selection to choose from, found half dozen new breweries and few regional ticks I needed more of. A must stop if near Exeter. |
76 /100 1-2 MACLAINES WAREHOUSE, HAVEN ROAD Visited July 2019. |
62 /100 Oddfellows (Bar) 60 NEW NORTH ROAD Reviewing from memory (5 years ago!) and looking at BlackHaddocks review to try and stimulate my brain. Mini pub crawl before the Exeter v Grimsby match Saturday 11th Nov 2017. I can't remember what was drunk but this was very stylish with a food area towards the back. |
52 /100 Old Fire House (Bar) 50 NEW NORTH ROAD Reviewing from memory (5 years ago!) and looking at BlackHaddocks review to try and stimulate my brain. Mini pub crawl before the Exeter v Grimsby match Saturday 11th Nov 2017. I can't remember what was drunk but I remember it all being flat/off. Maybe just an off day? I don't know. Place is lovely however, old fashioned, lots of wood, nice ambience and a nice outdoor seating area. I need to visit again to give a fair review. |
80 /100 Little Drop of Poison (Bar) 154 FORE STREET Called in while in Exeter for the beer festival, and had cask beers from Staggeringly good and Hanlons. We also enjoyed a couple of draft beers from Better World and Heist breweries. Friendly bar. |
68 /100 THE FAT PIG, 2 JOHN STREET Visited this pub while in Exeter for the beer festival but none of their own beers were on. We did enjoy beers from Powderkeg and Hanlons breweries. |
86 /100 1-2 MACLAINES WAREHOUSE, HAVEN ROAD Called in while visiting for the beer festival, and enjoyed this taproom. Friendly staff serving cask and tap beers from their own brewery and guests. We enjoyed a selection of thirds from both. Lovely location. |
80 /100 38 SOUTH STREET Called while visiting Exeter for th beer festival, and enjoyed a wander round this converted chapel with it's upstairs galleries, and amazing pulpit. The Salcombe Shingles Bay went down well. |
66 /100 Bowling Green (Bar) 29-30 BLACKBOY ROAD Called in for a meal after attending last month's Exeter beer festival as it is close to the football ground. Enjoyed a pizza and Otter Amber. |
80 /100 Imperial (JDW) (Bar) NEW NORTH ROAD Called in while visiting Exeter for the beer festival, and it was extremely busy so we couldn't get a proper look round. Service was quick though, and we enjoyed both our food and the beers from Hunter and South Hams breweries. |
72 /100 COWLEY BRIDGE ROAD Called in while visiting for Exeter beer festival January. Close to St David's station and we entered through the shop to a decent sized tap room with a selection of cask ales. We enjoyed Darkness and County Best. |
70 /100 202 HIGH STREET Called in while visiting Exeter for the beer festival An old city centre brewpub with a decent selection of their own ales. |
76 /100 25 PARIS STREET Very interesting bottle shop and taproom called Cuckoo. Board giving details of the beers available and could purchase thirds. Enjoyed beers from Many Hands, Whyte Bar, Steel Brew, Roam and Topsham.Plenty of seating for a bottle shop, but toilets were at the top of the building - 2 floors up! |
64 /100 Ship Inn (Greene King) (Bar) 1 MARTIN LANE Called in while in Exeter for the beer festival, and found it to be a pleasant old city centre pub near the cathedral very busy with a good vibe. Enjoyed Exeter Avocet and Hanlons Yellow Hammer. |
70 /100 BrewDog Exeter (Bar) UNIT 21A GUILDHALL SHOPPING CENTRE New BrewDog bar situated in a busy thoroughfare within the Guildhall Shopping Centre. Close to Exeter Central station but walkable from Exeter St Davids (around 20 mins). Outside seating both under cover and open to the elements. The inside isn't open yet so I only had a quick peek, it seems to be the typical urban chic inside. Beer menu dominated by Brewdog' own beers, with around 5 or 6 guest beers. Large beer fridge for other options & takeaways. Tasty burgers with vegan options available |
80 /100 Hops and Crafts (Beer Store) MCCOYS ARCADE, FORE STREET Bottle-shop offering a friendly welcome in Exeter. The range is decent, a mix of local and not so local beers available. Prices are OK. They also sell online. Recommended |
94 /100 Little Drop of Poison (Bar) 154 FORE STREET One of my favourite places to drink in Exeter. A good selection of beers with lots of local beers as well as the staples and even Duvel white. The barman knew what he was doing and the beer was fairly priced. Such a shame that the locals don't appreciate this place. |
76 /100 1-2 MACLAINES WAREHOUSE, HAVEN ROAD A nice spot in a nice location. The beer is a little expensive but not too much. The beer is all very yeasty and overall quite flat, I recommend you try airship and before you try the beer ask for a sample which the barman was happy to do for us. There's not a great selection but still not bad. The pies are nice. |
20 /100 1-2 MACLAINES WAREHOUSE, HAVEN ROAD Visited this place for the second time on 5/10/19. The bar is housed in an old warehouse on Exeter Quay. There are around four cask ales and four keg. The two beers I tried (one from the Topsham brewery, the other from Tiny Rebel) were completely flat, just as they had been on my first visit.
The barmaid who served us was utterly charmless, giving me my change without a smile or a thank you. I won't be rushing back. |
80 /100 Imperial (JDW) (Bar) NEW NORTH ROAD Visited on 28th Sep 2019, before Grimsby Town won 3-1 at St James's Park. Impressed, full of students, but that's not a problem when they are quiet. Loved the 'Orangery' and liked all the other rooms too. Only two cask rates for me though, so a little disappointing on that front. Staff pleasant, beer quality fine and overall, one of the best Wetherspoon pubs I have been in. Outside looked good too, but it was honking down with rain, so we stayed inside. |
76 /100 Old Fire House (Bar) 50 NEW NORTH ROAD Visited July 2019. Placed close to the city center easy to find. Very cosy multi roomed 2 storage pub. Placed in a very old building, cosy and welcoming atmosphere.. Few seatings outside as well. Nice range of beers and ciders, served in good condition.. |
72 /100 Oddfellows (Bar) 60 NEW NORTH ROAD Visited July 2019. Short walk from city center. Cosy pub, friendly staff and a welcoming atmosphere. Drinking area in the the front and more like eating area in the back, where the open kitchen are. Ok range of beers, a mix of keg and cask. |
62 /100 Imperial (JDW) (Bar) NEW NORTH ROAD Visited July 2019. Very huge pub, lots of seatings inside as outside. Several rooms, very busy at our visit. A bit worn out, and even though staff was running, there was a lot of clean up needed.. it's the well known line up of beers and food. |
74 /100 COWLEY BRIDGE ROAD Visited July 2019. Placed by Exeter st David station, easy to find. The taproom have very limited opening hours. They have a good range of their own beers on tap. They do a few pies, but didn't eat.. Nice place.. |
