60 HIGH STREET
“Visited February 2023. What others have said is pretty bang on. It's a small independent supermarket on Totnes high street. It looks a bit dodgy from outside - and even inside it looks like it's seen better days. However, it makes up for it with an interesting range of produce on the shelves. Being Totnes, quite a lot of it is organic, fairtrade, locally-produced and/or vegan, but it's still a nice change from your regular supermarkets. The beer shelves are straight ahead from the entrance, past the tills, and feature about 60-70 brews mainly from a wide range of local micros. Being south Devon most of them are traditional bitters and such like, but there are one or two craftier beers starting to creep in. Prices are reasonable. Service was efficient rather than friendly, but to be fair it was quite busy on our visit. Overall definitely worth a visit if you're in Totnes; I suspect most Ratebeerians could get quite a few new ticks here“

“A town centre location which brews it's own beers onsite. I had been recommended this place from a local because of the changing & interesting brews it produces. There was a friendly welcome with strict Covid distancing in place on a busy Saturday afternoon, only one of there beers was available because the brewer had only just returned to work, a unfiltered Vienna lager. It was outstanding & possibly the best beer of my holiday. They have a interesting range of other beers as well, on tap, bottled & canned.“

“In the upper western part of the town centre, pretty much where the High Street ends, this is a open plan pub with a central entranceway and a central bar serving two sides. The front area is a little squeezed by the bar but its tables and chairs by the windows are quite cosy. The cask ales also face into this area and being a New Lion brewery concern there should be a couple of these on the wickets as there were on my visit. Traditional in design, it was fairly quiet on the Monday lunchtime I visited.“

“Off the high street, you walk through a corridor to get to this supermarket deep within the building it occupies. One level, it's a convenience store size but they pack in quite a few worthwhile local and regional brews in one corner of the unit, some ciders too, mostly in bottle form.“

“Have visited a couple of times over the years, the first on a very sunny day when the outside patio area seemed the most popular place to sit in Totnes. It's quite nice inside too, with the bar on the left of the central entrance that adjoins into a impressive covered central courtyard. It looks like an inviting place to stay, and drink for that matter as the main bar has a lovely traditional styled furnishing to it. There's a few places dotted around the hotel you can take your drink to though if you want to. Sadly the selection is not that exciting with perhaps the most regular of ales from local microbreweries you best option in here.“

“A good place to go sampling. Good service. It would've been better if there had been a few more beers from their own brewery on. Also, perhaps some other upcoming breweries from the South East in general. Good though.“

“Funny little shop. It's almost like entering an indoor marker as the front is taken up by racks of fruit and veg, with small shops units on the left. Two small shelving units of beers - all advertised as organic. Picked up a couple more new Devon and Cornish breweries. Plus the are random beer and ciders. More old school brewers than craft. Was given more of a market hall feel by the two rough women who worked there, having a shouted conversation across the aisles, sounding more Eastenders than Devonian. I felt rude interupting them. Decent enough for a couple ticks.“

“A large if not particularly attractive pub. Don't think it's been decorated recently but I wasn't there for the decor. As well as the three New Lion core beers on tap I was really pleased to see they had a Pils on from Barnaby's so I was able to tick off all 4 of Totnes' breweries that evening. Quite a few people in there but not enough to fill up the large interior. Helpful barman who told me about the local breweries without any prompting and and was happy to hand me their phone so I could call a cab. There was a beer festival on the Friday which I would have liked to have checked out. A good end to a decent little pub crawl.“

“Slightly run down looking but the two locals were friendly as I stood at the bar waiting for someone to come back and serve me. Sat at the back and I was able observe the going on. A decent atmosphere as the various locals all seemed to know each other. Otherwise a couple discussing which day trips to take were enjoying supper. A couple of friendly dogs wandering around. Three of their beers on tap and available in a flight. A Powderkeg APA on tap and then some more macro offerings. Cool local pub with the benefit of it's own brewery.“

“I was in Totnes for a wedding. About 33 years ago I was a page boy at the bride's parents' wedding. We stayed in this hotel and I was keen to see what it was like now. My mother remembered it as being very old fashioned but it's obviously had a make-over. There's a large at the front of the hotel which was quite popular as the weather wasn't too bad. There didn't appear to be a door straight into the bar so I entered via the foyer. It's going for swanky and was pretty busy but hushed. In fact the loudest noise was the barman chatting to people. Seemed to be quite a few people sat with laptops so presumably used by people on business. A couple of keg efforts from Bays and Sandcombe kept me happy - spotted the latter which was further around the long central bar. There were also 3 or 4 casks which again were from Devon breweries. Suspect most punters were on wine. Quickly drank up and headed off for more ticks.“

“From what I understand this place has extended in size recently having take over the what was a seperate pub nextdoor. So you have what must be the original bar, dark and stripped down but not industrial. To the right there is an arch leading into the pub, which appears to have been rechristened as The Beer Library. I did get the impression that the whole bar is now called The Barrel House but that may just be the music venue on the first floor. Pretty busy on a Tuesday night. Slightly dissappointed at the options - just one of their beers and then some more standard craft options (Wild, Siren, Arbor). But for a small Devon town I guess it is more impressive. Fridge again seemed to have more widely available craft, plus some German and Belgian offerings. Staff were helpful despite serving me a beer I hadn't actually ordered. Impressive for a the location.“

“Visited on 13th August 2017. Large pub at the top end of town. It's got a couple of rooms with a central bar, decor is nice and traditional and well looked after. Beer range comes from the New Lion brewery and had 3 of their own beers on, well kept and prices decent. Service was OK and they do serve bar snacks such as hot sandwiches. Decent enough place“

“This is a privately owned Grocery Store in the town centre of Totnes. If you go all the way through to the back you will find quite a decent selection of South Western beers at good prices. Little more to be said other than the produce is also very good.“

“This is a big, rangy, multi roomed hotel bar and lobby, seemingly open for all comers to visit as there was a multitude of pushchairs and prams along with yummy mummys. There is a small range of cask beers available, locally sourced. It’s a bit crazy in there but you never know and it is right next to the bus depot area.“

“Quite a modern, shop type bar within the centre of town. Cool and welcoming, there is a bit of a stripped down feel but only lightly done so quite acceptable. It’s all about the beer in here whether cask, keg or bottled, all are presented. Definitely well worth visiting.“

“Quite a modernised, smart pub on the edge of town, really quiet and hushed apart from vocal local who seemed to dominate the pub. There was on European bar girl trying to keep the whole place going, everything appeared disorganised on our visit. Kept it short.“

“Friendly locals bar in the small alleyways just off the river area. Quite basic but clean, tidy and comfortable. Pub banter with pub games. Small range of beers, the kegs being the best option for new beers.“

“Special old pub in the Bridgetown part of Totnes, just a short walk from the town. Pleasantly relaxing and traditional, quite quiet on our visit. The pub dog, Albert, is a great character. They serve just their own beers, 2 regulars plus a seasonal. Certainly worth the walk to it.“

“Visited on a Saturday evening in September 2015. Situated less than 10 mins walk from the station but with an uphill gradient most of the way and situated underneath the Ballroom this is a nice addition to the town. There’s plenty of nooks and crannies to sit in, lots of seats, with a gig on later in the evening the place filled up with the Totnes beer enthusiast. A cool crowd but firendly and genuinely seemed interested in the beer, staff were very friendly. Their own beer was decent value, guests a bit pricier but not too bad. 6 taps, lots of good bottles to try. If you’re in the area then do pop in. It’s worthy of a bit of support.“

“Lovely old pub, with loads of Old World quaintness. The food which seemed to be knocked up in a very small kitchen near the back, was of a very good standard indeed. The highlight was the 8% cider but beer seemed well kept too.“

“Quaint Totnes pub, with it’s own Brewery at the rear (Bridgetown). Down the hill and over the river from Totnes town centre. 3 Bridgetown Ales, great old fashioned pub.“
