“The Holly Tree, with its large holly tree outside (a tree, not a bush!), is very much a locals’ local and a bit of a trek out of town in Withycombe, presumably once a separate village but now a suburb of Exmouth. It’s quite comfortable and a traditional sort of place - not olde worlde but not modern either. I thought it was rather blokeish but Chris summed it up better as a homely St Austell pub with a local vibe. There are nine hand pumps with four St Austell’s beers and four others. “Nice locals haunt with the feel and look of an old coaching inn unchanged by time. Low beams, bulky pillars that divide the bar area, relics of old on random shelves and window recesses that give it a homely feel. Can get rowdy, as I found out late on a Saturday night. Staff are great, the barman/cellarman/keeper is a character himself. Ten handpumps, all ales and ciders are kept well and served well. St Austell mainly, a few odd ones on rotation all from the west country brewers. A great old pub!“
