60 /100 Bell (Bar) ROYSTON ROAD Breathtaking little one-room freehouse in North West Essex, walkable from Audley End station (but do be careful, especially at night). Olde worlde to the hilt. Low wooden beams, horse brasses and an open fire. This is the real deal. Low lighting and soft jazz in the background (yes!) would make this a great romantic spot. Well-to-do clientele, but this remains a proper pubgoers’ pub. Judging by some of the pumpclips behind the bar, they can be more adventurous in their choices than they were tonight. I had a choice of Wherry, JHB, Wadworth Henry’s and Ghost Ship, but a beer from Bishop Nick was on next. Worth coming for beer quality and atmosphere. Bottles of Leffe Blonde if you’re feeling crazy. All real ales were £3.30 or £3.40 per pint. As is often the case with rural pubs such as this, note opening hours (not 100% sure whether these change during summertime). |
