Ivy House (Bar)

“Lovely old-fashioned pub, a symphony in brown with a roomy bit of front & the bar to the right with a bigger dining area with a music stage in the back. London's first community-owned pub apparently, and it does have a 'local's local' feel. Really friendly with good beer: Four cask beers with about four keg worth bothering with, including Cambridg's BrewBoard and the local-ish Distortion. Pizza available as well and snacky bits. Maybe not a 'must-visit' but I'd say a good one to check out.“

“This pub has been on my ’to do’ list for some time. Maybe it was the suspense, but this was a touch disappointing. It’s solid enough with a varying cask range and the possibility of cask ale flights. But nothing exciting really. Possibly the most middle class pub I’ve ever entered. Literally a pram and child per table. All in all it’s a nice local pub to get a Sunday roast or hummus but not particularly ticker friendly. Nor is it as historically interesting as I’d been led to believe.“

The area around this pub isn’t particularly nice, but it has quite a yuppie vibe inside. Capacity for 8 cask and several keg. Had some interesting Saaf Lundun beers at ok prices. Staff have a steady flow of work but you’re not queuing forever and they’re friendly. People were getting pissed off at having to wait 40 minutes for chips, but I didn’t order food. Overall, this is a nice pub but, with the location being as random as it is, I can’t say it’s worth a special journey.“

“A bustling locals pub, with a good range of beers. Around eight casks, plus kegs and bottles. The beer range is a mix of traditional styles and some more progressive styles, esp. from London-based breweries. Good looking food, although I didn’t eat on my visit. OK value.

An OK option if you’re in the area.“

“While it’s not terribly attractive from the outside, the inside - which is what really matters - is great. It’s a large, spacious pub with a worn-in feel. Good range of beers on cask and keg and in bottle. There’s a solid showing of local breweries, in addition to regional brands. Good value, friendly service. One of the best options in the area.“

“A great little cafe with a solid selection of beers. Usually carrying most of the main south London breweries and a semi-regular selection from the likes of Tempest, Rooster’s, Arbor, Mallinson’s, Thornbridge. Only significant grumble is the lack of pricing on the bottles. The management are usually open to ordering in something if you request it. Typically open late on the last Friday of the month. Great snacks to be had along with the beer and a very sold wine selection.“

“Very special pub. Great history. Solid community roots. Quirky events in rooms off main bar. Interesting selection of quality beers (craft and ales) - Beavertown Gamma Ray and a variety of Kernel IPAs usually on tap. Food - a very tasty stepping stone to a heart attack, as all the best pub food should be. Off the beaten track but well worth the detour. And if you live near already - well done.“

“A decent little shop in Nunhead. It’s a cafe with a small seating area to eat in. They have many shelves full of upscale foodstuffs - olive oil, cheese, expensive jars of spreads and the like. The beer range is decent and there is a focus on London breweries. Prices on the beer can range widely. This place also has a good wine selection. A good local option but not a destination.“

“A very cool pub about half hour walk from Brockley markets. A very nice walk too with lots of hills and stuff. A decent sized pub split into two rooms by a pair of double doors. Selection very focused on local offerings a good ones at that - Brockley, Late Knights, Zen, Beavertown and Kernel among others. Bottled selection is more from the same breweries as well as the always classic Orval. Very cheap too. Love the community focused feel and they are proud of that and so they should be. Great place“

“The Ivy House re-opened in August as a co-op owned pub. It has retained its rather lovely period features. The bar is split into two rooms and has a great laid-back atmosphere. There is clear focus on local craft brewed ale & cider. They have 8 cask ales/ciders on from the likes of Clarence & Fredericks, Brockley, Five Points, Late Knights etc. The keg range does not not disappoint with offerings from the Kernel, Beavertown and Rocky Head. They also have a well-chosen selection of bottles from Kernel, Rocky Head, Partizan and Orval. They serve food to rather late as well. All in all a brilliant pub and one in which I could spend a lot of time. Has a similar ethos to the Hope, which is one of the best pubs out there.“
